Good gearing advice. I learned the hard way about gearing on an e-bike. I had to replace my rear cassette, front chainring and my chain after less than 6 months on my first e-bike. Due to the much higher torque values of an e-bike it's very easy to get into bad gearing habits, and costly too. As mentioned in the video you can grind it out on a regular MTB, but e-bikes are different. Very sensible advice in the video. 👍🏻

I got my first ebike yesterday, a Haibike xduro allmtn 3.0 and I found out the hard way its not the same as a traditional mtb when it comes to gears. Within 1.5 miles of my first ride, I snapped the chain. In turbo mode going up a steep hill, in way too hard a gear, i tried to change gears under load. Doh. Live and learn.

1X systems have 'dumbed down' new riders. You can consider the e-mode as a front derailleur, and find the proper range for the terrain. Other things to consider is shifting under a load, such as climbing into a lower gear (bigger cog) - slightly increase cadence before the shift and back off the cadence when you shift - it will save your chain and cogset. If you hear a grinding while climbing (which is your chainwheel overtightening with your chain), you are in too high of gear and need to shift to a bigger cog. As a super-clydesdale rider, I break things more than most. I use Deore XT 11sp cogs, because they last. I have broken teeth off of SLX cogs, and the SunRace cogs (which work well on my regular bikes) are too soft of material for the extra torque of an ebike under load, and the teeth will bend if you downshift (go to bigger cog) under a load.

A great guide for any one buying their first e mountain bike but I do wonder how many subscribers to embn don't already own one. I certainly didn't know anything about embn when I bought my ebike. How can you best reach out to those people out there who know nothing about you. I guess we can all pass info on to fellow mountain bikers who are considering swapping over to emtb's. food for thought.

Thank you for the video. I have a Shimano 250 watt mid-drive hybrid bike. It has a 1X9 Shimano Alivio gear system. Will it be of any benefit to me if I upgrade this system to a Shimano 1x10 Deore gear system? Currently, it has a large crank arm 44T gear. Generally, it has a 44T gear. I am cycling 40 km on a route that can be considered flat during the day. Does the 1X10 system have advantages over the 1x9 system? (By the way, the bike currently costs 11-36 rubles. If I make it 11-42, will I benefit from the e-bike?)

I only ride a road e-bike, so this might be a little different than off road. But I have found that the bike motor makes certain sounds when you are not in the correct cadence. High pitch and loud when you are spinning too fast. No sound at all when you are too slow, like on a hill and too high of a gear. Just a low noise when you are in the sweet spot. Unless you have a bike computer to see your cadence, it takes a while to get it right. You can of hear it in the video with the whining of the motor.
@urastus9202
@urastus9202 4 жыл бұрын
It's what you perceive to be a comfortable speed for the motor - as in a car or motorcycle. We don't really need a tachometer. Although I am educating myself with cadence with the meter. I also think the sound, during up change, is like a formula one 😁
@johnnonrev1004
@johnnonrev1004 4 жыл бұрын
@@urastus9202 If you mean just speed, then the grade of what you are riding on dictates the speed. As far as cadence, I am kind of a "Masher" so an easy ride I will average 40-50, on a fast ride 60-65, with a few spikes up to 90. But remember, my bike is road bike and is geared 50-11 so it different from at E-MTB. Some times when mine is whining loud, my friends refer to mine as the rocket bike.

I have a question. I just got a new ebike (treck powerfly 5) and I can only shift up or down one gear at a time. Is this normal? I am used to being able to shift up 3 at once by pressing hard on the shifter.
@andygray1098
@andygray1098 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is normal on Powerfly 5 as it's fitted with single shift so there's less stress on the chain. I have the Giant Fathom E+1 Pro and it has the same SRAM set up for this reason

A Garmin or other bike computer with a cadence sensor. You can then also monitor your heart rate, amount of climbing, navigation stuff and lots of other useful information. And probably a lot of other information that you might not care about but is cool to look at.
@CarkeekW
@CarkeekW 4 жыл бұрын
its much more simple than that , 60 is two pedal strokes per second and 90 is 3 , minimum of two at all times to have good efficiency. Count aloud 1 thousand, two thousand and count the strokes to give yourself a good rough idea. no display needed . You can buy them fairly cheap too , but once you get a feel for it you dont need them any longer bikesmarts.com/4-iphone-android-friendly-cadence-speed-sensors-reviews/

@@mozzjones6943 could be. I have the guide from shimano and there is no explanation of anything other than the basic function. I've only been using eco which was set on high. Power backing off at 100 rpm is not a problem with me - the grunt lower down (below 50rpm) seems to be very good. I have read on some forums people complaining about the same thing (not full power at high rpm) - at this point it's my theory and this is the first time I've mentioned it.

@@mozzjones6943 What you say sounds logical and makes sense. I'm not suffering yet 😃. I might play with turbo on some stupid steep climbs we have here (Tasmania). It won't worry me either way though. I've ridden once with a friend on a giant ebike (yamaha motor). It seems very similar re power etc. He does better on technical climbs, I'm guessing it's because he jumps into turbo - well giant's equivalent of turbo. Thanks for the information Mozz

Great demonstration, but some of us want decent assistance above the measly 15mph imposed by the bureaucratic killjoys of national government, here in the UK. By way of illustration: anyone with the nerve can easily top 30-35mph, going down a steep, defect free, tarmac hill, with no assistance whatsoever, other than gravity. Therefore, if you're going to limit e-bikes to 15mph of assistance (presumably on the grounds of safety) logic says 15mph should also be the legal maximum speed, under any circumstances. Otherwise, it's just a way of screwing money out of cyclists, by arbitrarily creating a new category of vehicle. Nice scenery, BTW. Definitely NOT the UK, methinks. 😄👍

For me its a good thing, because over 25km/h i would need a driving license for mopeds. So it would be my responsability to cap the bicycle at 25 and to prove it. Its way better that this is the default mode. I think legislators thinked well that byciclists are people who dont want speed, danger and driving license to prove they are fit for those.
