The older me (i.e. the current me) certainly regrets that younger me (in the past) went to so many stupidly unnecessarily loud concerts. I've had tinnitus for years, unfortunately, and have lost the ability to hear some higher tones. From what I've read, this is an increasingly common problem (e.g. I read that increasingly many people turn on subtitles when watching TV/films/videos), and I've seen various musicians on youtube talk about it (e.g. I recall Rick Beato and Andrew Huang both did videos about their own tinnitus). Society is stupidly destroying its own hearing health with needlessly painfully loud noise in so many situations (not just music amplification, but also e.g. stupid intentionally loud macho cars and motorcycles, etc etc.) The world seems increasingly loud and hearing-damaging. I've never understood why so many clubs and concerts are so painfully over-amplified. I sure wish I'd been more cautious and aware that I was permanently damaging my hearing when I was younger and going to music clubs.

OK great, I’m going to follow your advice, so I’ll hear the bear, but you now need to post details of that choke-hold!….But seriously, any advice on headphones; I’m sure I monitor too loud when mixing?

I'm editing the video of the bear right now : ) As far as headphones go, I think most people mix on speakers and then check in headphones. I have some studio speakers, but I do most of my mixing on my Avantone Mix Cubes and then I check in two pairs of headphones. My studio headphones which are Sennheiser noise canceling headphones, and I also always check the mix in ear buds because a lot of people listen to music on ear buds.

Hey, I know this is off topic but I was watching your video about chromatic 2-5 and for the first part I was understanding it, but when you started deconstructing line for lions melody I got really confused. The part I got confused about what when in the start of the melody you have said the G6 wasn’t a G7 because it has a g in it, but that really confused me as I don’t understand how that makes it it a G6 when there is no 6 not in that part of the melody. I have tried to look this up but no Luck, Can you elaborate or explain why it it a G6?

Hey, I was referring to the Melody in relationship to the harmony underneath. The harmony/chord is a G6 and If you have the Root (G) of a chord in the Melody, it's a really common Jazz Arranging technique to use a Major 6th chord instead of a Major 7th chord because the 7th of the chord would clash very harshly with the melody. For example, in Line for Lyons, the places where he plays G6, there is a G in the melody, the places where he has a G Maj7 there is no G in the melody. If you play guitar or piano you can easily test this out by playing a G Major7 chord with the G on top of the voicing and listen to how aggressive and dissonant it becomes and then just lower the Major 7th down to the Major 6th and see how much less dissonant and more pleasing the sound is. Let me know if that helps.

@@chromaticusmusic ok i understand what your saying, but what confused me initially was that although you said for the melody it was to not be dissonant with the chord underneath which i understand, i don't understand why that would matter when there is no chord playing underneath the melody. At least to me when i was listening to the song there wasn't.

ah' I'm sorry. I see what you're saying now. The bass is outlining the chords, but you're correct in that there isn't a piano or guitar player playing the actual chords. So what I said referred to the general arranging technique, but didn't actually apply that version of the song. Sometimes I get way to far ahead of myself! So what I said is only valid if you covered the song and had someone comping the full chords!! @@deleted7455

@@chromaticusmusicOmg, thank you so much for all this feedback. It really helped me understand that video so much better, and also I’ve been watching your other videos and they definitely for me changed the way I’ve been analyzing and constructing other songs and my songs.❤
