As a starting point, take whatever your shutter speed is at the correct exposure, then keep dividing by 2. Each time you double your ND number. So in this case the shutter speed was 1/800 for correct exposure. ND2 = 1/400 ND4 = 1/200 ND8 = 1/100 ND16 = 1/50 This can give you a clue as to where to start instead of going through every ND with trial and error. Then just check visually as shown on this video to check you're getting the correct exposure at your desired shutter speed.

If you shoot at 60 fps or higher and won’t make it a slow motion video then you should forget the 180 degree rule. For 60 fps you should use the shutter speed of 1/60 seconds. Gerald Undone has made a great example video about this matter. Search for ”Gerald Undone motion blur” (without the quotes)

there's aperture also (one of the main advantages of mavic 2/3). instead of bumping iso, you could gain 1 stop by open to f/2.8. it will be sharp enough, closed apertures (like f/8 and up) are more problematic for sharpness from my experiences with m2p

I got the zebra markings back, I wasn’t flying just held in hand and moved the mini 2.

Great explanation! Thank you so much! - Beginner question: is the format of any importance? I hear that D-Log is the way-to-go format nowadays, because it is perfect for post-production, since it records "without contrasts". Does that mean D-Log videos do not need any ND filters? (I assume they still do, but if you have a moment, I'd love to read your thoughts on this. Thanks!)

@@TheDroneCreative I managed to get away from work at the end of the day and I tested out the ND filters I got. My kit has 8,16,32 and 64. I thought it was bright here but I guess Ireland is not that bright. I tried the 32 and it was way too dark. The only moment it was ok was if I was facing the sun head on. I ended up filming with the 8 and 16 to try them out and I ended up using the 16 and varying the ISO a bit from 100 to 400 to get everything just right. I guess it will take some practice and planning to know which filter to use on which day and I guess at the beach with the dark sand the 32 and 64 might come in handy. Thanks again.

FWIW you can save yourself the trial and error with a little math (or memorization). The MM section will tell you how many stops you’re overexposed, and each ND filter also tells you how many stops of light it cuts out. So it’s just a matter of matching them up: ND2, 1 stop. ND4, 2 stops. ND8, 3 stops. ND16, 4 stops (the mathematical formula is log2(ND number), but I find it easier to just memorize the values. Or use your voice assistant to do the math for you 😅). In this video the MM area said +2 so we know an ND4 would’ve gotten us to a “perfect” exposure. Hope this helps speed things up!

Great and helpfull videos, thanks! Question as a beginner. If the shutter speed must be double of the frame rate. Why do you set the framerate to 1/50 instead of 1/60? Is 1/50 equal 60 for shutter speed? 1/50, meaning like you sayd "1 over/ 50" = 60? And 1 over/ 60 = 70 for the shutter speed?

Excellent video, Matthew. Thank you. I love my Mini 2, but frankly I don't like the method DJI has for holding a filter on. So fiddly, and always at risk of getting finger prints on the filter or camera lens. Also, once I wasn't careful enough to be sure the filter was secure and lost it somewhere over a forest. It looked like it was in place, but obviously wasn't. I am anxiously awaiting the release of the DJI Mini 3, and really hope there is a better filter mounting system. Something like the Mavic 3 system would be great, even though it means I would have to buy another set of Freewells.

Your aperture was f 4.0 which is really wide. Why not go for smaller one which as result will bring back the highlights? And I would not increase the ISO from 100, instead I would change the aperture 1 stop wider. I do have ND filters but hate to have another thing to carry around and fiddle with and only use it when it is extremely bright. . I find it that motion blur is only necessary when you fly close to objects or really fast.
