Absolutely loved the series. My only regrets were that she never went back to see her mentor in the basement during her rise to fame and the fact that she never even sent him back the $10 he gave her for the tournament that started it all!

@@mariemadlenek Could be but I took it differently. I think the $10 wasn’t really important to either of them. I think she broke down because she felt the loss of this man who taught her a game and changed her life. The $10 was incidental, it went way beyond that. But yeah, a reunion scene would have been cool but it was also super powerful that after all that time she saw that he had been following her career all along. That scene was amazing and very emotional as it kind of brought the whole story full circle back to the beginning. Great show. I predict Emmy's!

There was definitely a bit of regret when she saw all the newspaper articles he kept and how he basically followed and supported her every move. At the end she basically realises that even when she felt alone there were people who were mentally with her and that caused her to snap out of it and go win big time. Because she was no longer lonely.

I really enjoyed how she rejected every attempt to talk about being a female amongst men, she genuinely didn’t care about it and like Anya said, she was too intelligent, she was above that train of thought and it was irrelevant to her. And eventually people stop asking and just see her as the best chess player and not the best female chess player. Also the show didn’t beat you over the head with the fact that she’s a women bc Beth herself didn’t pay it any attention. It was a refreshing way to handle it

This series SURPRISED me. It was VERY VERY good. I highly recommend it. Even if chess isn't your game, the story stands strong and connects to the audience and you walk away having learned something about chess after all. The series starts a little slow, be patient, I promise it will pick up a few episodes in, and then towards the end you will be sitting at the edge of your seat literally shouting at the tv like a grandma asking the protagonist not to make mistakes with her life.

I am a 59 year old man who's occupation is truck driving. I was sitting in bed unsure of what to watch and I clicked on Queen's Gambit. Netflix is my only streaming service, and typically I watch a couple of minutes of a show or movie and feel unimpressed, and quickly close it out... never to return to it. I had no foreknowledge of Queen's Gambit and figured I would not be impressed, but boy was I wrong. I inhaled the first episode. I was so utterly drawn-in and engaged by the girl who played Beth at the orphanage, and her relationship with Mr. Shaibel. Little did I know that the adult-version of Beth would impress me even more. I have since watched the series twice, and I tell everyone I work with about it. Of course, everyone I work with drives a truck for a living so I doubt many of them will feel inclined to watch it. Their loss. Anya Taylor Joy is fascinating. There are so many nuanced moments in her expressions or attitude that are mesmerizing to watch. She is pure gold. Nobody can do what she does. One thing that really makes me sad is that Mr. Shaibel didn't say good-bye to her when she left the orphanage. Why did he ignore her when she waved good-bye to him from the car? He later sent her $5 for the tournament fee, I know. But still... I was just saddened by what their relationship had become.

@Patatmetmayo
@Patatmetmayo 3 жыл бұрын
Mr. Shaibel didn't say goodbye because it was too painful for him, it's a defense mechanism. She was the closest thing to a friend he ever had and he just couldn't handle the fact that she was leaving. When you can't deal with certain emotions you can either pretend they don't exist or face those emotions and risk a mental breakdown. He chose the first.

I inhaled the series just as you describe. I didn't think I could be so impressed by a netflix original. I finished watching it yesterday evening and this morning I bought the e-book because I didn't want to wait 6 days for it to come in. It's very interesting to read the story instead of seeing it because of the way it's told, you experience it in a completely different way.

@@marshall2 I don't know if you're much of a reader, a lot of people aren't, but I know they also made the book into an audiobook. So if you can't get enough of Beth maybe that would be fun to listen to while you're driving. What I especially loved is the moment when she's in Paris and she's about to go up to the russian. She just got dressed and she's wearing this ligh green and dark green dress, when she takes the first sedative pill since a long time, and after Paris is when she completely spins out. I just like how the dress is the same colours as her pill and it symbolizes to us, the watcher, that she is going to have a rough patch when she comes back from Paris.

Honestly think the decision to have her like clothes and girly things as well as chess saved the series, I honestly think I would've stopped watching if they portrayed her as the stereotypical "not like the other girls" that storyline is overdone and obnoxious. i loved the scenes with her mother going to classy hotels. her mom was probably happy for the first time in her life. they also bonded as mother and daughter. there were a couple of airplane scenes made me cry. also when my mom died, i had her bathrobe with me when i slept too. that was sad and realistic.
@Nyarlah
@Nyarlah 3 жыл бұрын
It's shown in a smart way, she doesn't care about clothing before going to school and checking how the other girls dress. After that, and the "sales" store scene, where she stops at a mannequin with nice clothing, she basically adds "dress well" as an additional purpose in life. She doesn't want to look "girly", she uses clothing as one more way to prove her independency.

At first I thought the story will develop into a cliche-like "parent uses child to make money", and I was almost sure that her mom wants to exploit her in the beginning of her career, taking her out of school and driving her to more and more chess tournaments. What i love most about the show is how they portrayed the relationship between Beth and her mom. Two lonely women with significant amount of problems, giving each other as much space as one needs and quiet support, while each one of them gained something she craved from that. 10 10 would recommend.

Yeah, I liked the reality of many of the scenes. For instance she is a star in the chess world and even had some coverage for being a woman chess player in Life magazine but then it shows the crappy conditions they were playing under at the university with the top players in the country. And after that scene we see that Benny, also a top player, drives a crappy VW bug and lives in a depressing apartment - so much for a glamorous chess life but the reality that it is a hard way to try to make a living. Even more true to reality would be showing some of these brilliant players making money by teaching chess to "idiot" untalented children from rich families - what a mind numbing way to waste their talent but it pays the bills.

2 season? The story is based on the book, definitely should not be created another season. especially since Beth is a character based on Bobby Fisher. @@islanzari222 I want to read the book to have a better understanding what she was coping with and to some degree a bit of madness from her real mom. Miss Taylor-Joy’s performance is going to be required viewing in film school. It is as close to cinematic perfection as makes no difference. It is the right part for her and she plays it to perfection. What really gets me, as a chess player of many years, is how completely relatable the chess-playing and the environment surrounding it is. There was no moment where I thought: nah, I don’t believe this. Everything about it is the genuine lived experience of chess players (there’s more to it than that, but it’s not about what every other player does, it’s what she does). This is what great tv is. This performance will never get old.

I watched this series in one day, and I was amazed by the storyline and her riveting role. I unintentionally got my dad hooked in as well since, most of the time, he rarely gets interested in anything. If he did, his attention span is pretty short. It was amusing to see him so eager to go on to the next episode that I could not help but oblige. As it turns out, he used to play chess when he was young. In a way, I see this show as even more special because I found out things about my dad, who is a very private man, that I never knew before and that we both genuinely enjoyed watching something so intense and compelling together. Ill-fitting but correct-for-period underwear was utterly perfect, as was hair (only one bad wig on one of the collaborators in NY helping her prep for the Russian final) and I could practically smell the perspiration on the polyester suits and shirts. Sublime, understated perfection in hair and wardrobe.

Imagine Beth visualizing the combinations of ever-moving pieces dancing across the ceiling then imagine someone doing that in their daydreams; done with forks and revisions, not with pieces but with plot. That is me, but in my imagination there is no drug or alcohol abuse. Maybe it was necessary in this series. We have become conditioned to need it in our American art/entertainment or to sell a story. How Takao Yoshioka put it, "...the day might eventually come...when the muses demand another loss." For worse, this was Beth's story. Even still... I loved the series and loved the fashion. P.S. Man this series hit different, what I loved most about it was that it wasn't just about the intricacy of the story but literally every single aspect of it was thoroughly thought out and in every scene I felt the amount of care that was put into it - from wardrobe, to camera angles, to transitions, to color choice. I hate to make the comparison but I feel that not enough series on netflix care about the entirety of the experience to the extent that this series did. You can tell by how Anya talks about it as well the difference it makes when everyone is truly invested and it's not just a money grab. loved it and congrats to the entire team, so much to be proud of in this series.
