Emma Hendrickson was 14 years old when she was diagnosed with a debilitating, rare autoimmune disease, a condition that affects less than 100 people worldwide. She turned to Yale Medicine for answers. Doctors use a procedure called apheresis, which takes every drop of blood out of Emma's body, separates the plasma containing rogue antibodies and infuses a blood protein replacement. It's like bailing out a leaking boat. It won't fix the leak but it prevents a patient from suffering. In Emma's case, the procedure gives her an optimal quality of life until a cure is found.

Hey Emma, same same! I’m wondering if we have the same thing. I have autoimmune autonomic neuropathy, and am also on an every ten day schedule. Recently was able to graduate from weekly, woohoo! I didn’t tolerate the IVIG so I do Rituxan but man I’ve never seen someone my age with the same crap going on haha! I would love to connect if you would be okay with that, is APEX buddies gotta stick together! I’m glad you’re doing well, it was so crazy how quickly I started getting my life back once I started proper treatment. Not cured, but I am actually a human again for the most part. Super thankful! Thanks for sharing your experience!!

I have autoimmune autonomic neuropathy issues too.....I have only been 'allowed' to try IVIG (when all other pill form medications failed)....no one will allow me to try apharesis - I keep getting told if it would ever be allowed it would be a 1 time thing because it is too dangerous to do it anymore than a few times in your lifetime....of course that is not what the real data says in the medical literature....I'm glad Emma is feeling better even if it does require repeat treatments often. What is the best way to find a doctor that will listen? I have been sick for 15 years now....

Hi, is there a safe way to do Apharesis using leg veins instead of arm veins? I'd likely donate more if so. Thanks!

This is good for lyme and tickborne diseases. I saw somehone here on KZfaq sharing his story about it and it gave him his energy back. He had to do a number of them. and also continue medication but this procedure definitely helped him.
