Rojava is a unique place in the Middle East. Here the Kurds are trying to build a society based on self-government, social justice and gender equality together with other peoples. But so far, equality is more evident in war: the residents of Rojava have to defend their land from Islamic State fighters, Syrian President Bashar Assad considers them separatists, Turkey accuses them of terrorism and occupies their territories, and Russia and China do not allow humanitarian aid to be delivered to Rojava.
How, despite all this, the Kurds continue to build their autonomy?
