Thank you immensly Nat Geo WILD for helping amplify the voices of our precious elephants. I'm honoured to have been able to produce the entire series Asian Elephants 101, including this segment through the Nat Geo Explorers storytelling award!

The trunk touching seems so delicate, it's interesting to hear the communication might communicate more than we can understand.

I’ve heard Asian elephants make the chirping (I say squeaking, lol) sounds after a baby has been born or at rescue centers or sanctuaries when new elephants arrive from various places. It must be so loud in person!
@alvexok5523
@alvexok5523 2 жыл бұрын
That's what I heard also, and I saw the sanctuary video of a group of Asian elephants meeting a new baby elephant and there was chirping/squeaking going on. I saw another sanctuary video of an elephant squeaking while playing with a tire. These are what gave me the idea that squeaking meant happiness and joy. So hearing here how squeaking means agitation and negative emotions is news to me

It is interesting how different the noises are for wild verses captive Asian elephants. Ear flapping, tail wagging and squeaks are more of a happy thing in captive elephants. I have been keeping track of ENP in Chiang Mai Thailand (an elephant rescue for enslaved elephants) for many years. Seeing the change in the rescued elephants is amazing and heart warming. The confidence in the wild is so much stronger with the wild elephants. I wish they all had the choice of being wild, but unfortunately people took that away from quite a few.

Very interesting video. Just on time for the World Elephant Day! LOVE their chirping or squeaks. Only Asian elephants squeak. African ellies do not make this sound!..:-) amazing!

That's right. What I'm now curious about is why he's saying in this video that chirping means annoyance and agitation. I've seen a few sanctuary videos where elephants were chirping due to being happy excited and joyful, that's how they clearly seemed to be because they were chirping due to playing with a tire in one video and while gathering around to meet a new elephant in another. And they were affectionately petting the new phant with their trunks while chirping so those phants were clearly happy

At 3:50, notice the younger elephant leading the way into the forest slaps her trunk on the ground to get the baby’s attention to follow. I’ve also seen them use their trunk to motion the way for their babies. Much like we’d use our hand to motion someone to come along.

Very interesting but I think ellies (captive) also chirp when they are happy excited, as when they hear music that humans play for them in zoos and sanctuaries. They are obviously loving the melodies. ❤🐘

I know, that's what I've seen too, elephants chirping while clearly being happy. I don't know why he's saying in this video that chirping means agitation and negative emotions. In those other videos, the phants were chirping while playing with a tire and while gathering around to meet a new phant arriving at the sanctuary, and those are clearly joyful activities
