Australians have, to varying degrees, lost the right to free speech. Various laws and regulations have been passed abolishing free speech at a federal and state level. The courts have likewise ruled that Australia's implied freedom of political communication, implied in the constitution, does not apply to individuals or groups, only political communication as a whole.

Without protection of free speech, there is a risk that Australia's democracy itself is at stake. Far from being a left or right wing issue, the right to free speech should be seen as something above politics, and indeed, paramount for a democratic society to function.
