In this episode, I interviewed one of the co-founders of Viktor-Anande Bergman, a new platform to evolve the way engineering tools are built. We discussed the story behind how Viktor came about, the challenges he was facing as an engineer and software developer, as well as what he thinks about the future of engineering.
Structural engineering and structural design software is a complex topic, and having the right tools to complex your designs is the only way to do it efficiently. And as structural engineers, we like to build our own structural tools; however, we spend too much time building tools that only work for personal use; however, to make it better, you can help leverage not only your time but the time of other increasing the ROI(return on investment). We go through some of the lessons we learnt on this engineering journey and how you can avoid them. Viktor platform brings these tools to the next level.

Great interview Brendan! I have been indecisive about spending time learning coding as a late in the career structural engineer, but this interview has pushed me towards learning it and automating some of the routine tasks.

Amazing interview. Hopping on an internship soon and im not hoping for the repetitive tasks, that are sometimes common. Hopefully i get time to extend my Revit and Dynamo knowledge and wander into the world of Python. Thanks for those 38 minutes, it really inspired me and confirmed my past choices!

Really helpful interview. I have a question about the automations for the offshore platform and the composite bridge. I would love to learn what exactly was automated, since I cannot imagine it myself how so many thousands of welds would no longer need inspection due to software. Those welds would still physically need to be inspected, no?
@JosephBears
@JosephBears Ай бұрын
I suspect that all of the welds were inspected to get an estimate of their strength, and then they automated an analysis of the whole structure to determine if it was still safe with the current weld strength.

I have noticed that you mention python a lot. I developed a program for automatised buckling analysis during the assembly of bridges using C# . Would you reccomend C# as well ?

I’m working in c# for various structural algorithms. Much readable to me than python syntax.

@@sccooty it seems like there is more "material" regarding python in structirsl engineering though.

Yes I noticed that as well. However it didn’t convince me to jump the ship. I tried do few things in python but after a week I was screaming. Tried c# and never looked back.

Just completed my master thesis and the topic was design of steel truss roofs with parametric design approach with Grasshopper and SOFiSTiK. I think its quite nice to work with these tools, and very promising in the conceptual design phase for now...

data Science and Artificial Intelligence will be integrated to software and it can do 90% design and Analysis with no engineer. Only Architect need to feed basic drawing, dimensions and materials details. Work can be done with voice command and prompt engineering.
