why is it called averaging ? what is the advantages over orrifice plate. does it perform well in fluids with small particulate in the medium?

Because unlike regular pitot tubes , the averaging pitot tubes will take the average of all the values of holes in the pitot tube facing upstream... A pitot tube doesn't obstruct or restrict a fluid flow unlike a orifice plate would, so pressure recovery is good and there is no pumping loss .... Also, no this generally works only for clean fluids , so any particulate medium may end up clogging the tube
