No, the valve should not be installed on every fixture. It must be on the main sewer line just prior to exiting your house.

The sewage in this video is coming right to left. and if there is backflow from the city the valve will remain closed to both sides of flow.

That’s a good question. I flushed a basement toilet and I think I let a little sewage in my basement shower. It didn’t immediately overflow in the shower so I know there was a little more coming in from the street. I believe the flush I sent down the pipe may have broken the seal and let some back-flow in before it sealed up again. It wasn’t real bad. We had another heavy rain a week later and I didn’t flush any toilets. We didn’t get any water in the shower. This neighborhood is known for sewage backup during heavy rains. My neighbor has a 2 inch ball valve on his downstairs utility sink - he doesn’t have a basement bath like me.

Is your family worth not having to deal with the waste matter of strangers. YES. Look at Kessel Backwater valves as your first start. It really depends on the type of backwater valve you have installed. If the valve has a threaded cap built into the top of the valve, you can use this as an access port. Inspectors often use past experience to help homeowners. I always recommend installing a cleanout upstream the backwater valve and downstream. If you keep fiddling with the valve without proper practice you could cause a fault. If you have the valve seen in the video above you should be okay. Test the flapper and make sure it can flip. Synthetic Grease, But in general do not use the model in the video on your mainline its really best suited for branch lines connecting to the main lateral. It’s a good idea to install the backwater valve on your homes building drain to prevent backflow from public sewer or private septic system. If for whatever reason, groundwater penetrate or surface water enters your septic system. There is a chance of flooding back into your home.

Thanks so much for you interest in the subject. Technically any valve that stops or prevents backwater is a backwater valve. Backwater valves are generally divided into two categories: The first is know was a normally open backwater valve and the second is known as normally closed. Normally open backwater valves are valves that you install on the main sewer line before any other drain-line branch from the main line. Think of installing a valve on the trunk of a tree where as normally closed valves can be installed on the branch of the tree. Valves need to be normally open to to allow for sewer gases to vent up through the buildings drain stack(s). In most jurisdictions normally closed valves can not be installed on the main sewer line or “trunk” because it would prevent the sewer system venting and it also hinders the flow of your sewer drain. Your basement floor drain is designed to allow water to leave your basement in the event that water were to come in from either a window or from a burst pipe. If the water were to rise up into an electrical panel which is often located in the basement there can be serious safety risks. With that said you can always put in what is called a test plug inside the floor drain to prevent water from flowing up and out of the drain. You should also consider putting in a water alarm to let anyone know if water were in the basement for whatever reason because a block floor drain is a safety risk. For that reason it is best to have a Backwater Valves installed on the floor drain to prevent any sewage from coming back up. This valve will also allow water to flow out whenever the sewer back up where to stop that’s reducing the safety risk.

There is probably a vet that is clogged or improperly installed, thats why when the top floors drain they get air and send it your way, maybe its time to redo the piping in your building many buildings that are old dont have proper air ventilation

Yes I you can always install a check valve to prevent backwater but not a traditional backwater valve which are typically used on the buildings main drain. The problem with valves in kitchens is that they get dirty super quick. Avoid putting food waste down the kitchen sink if you do. I hope this helps
