It fills me with dread to think what lies beneath the bodywork of my '77 Jubilee. It lives outside and working in the rain is a pita.

I am sure it won’t be this bad. But sounds like the jubilee is a rare little car and would be worth saving 👍

It winds me up that the previous owners trusted and relied on someone who wasn't playing the game correctly. I did the same for years, trusted my local mechanic to service and fix my previous car... they did loads of work to solve a misfire, and ran it dry of oil in the process. Now I'm back to doing it myself, and really enjoying it to be honest, but I've had a poor experience with mechanics

I couldn’t agree more I find it very hard to trust someone else with my car. Someone it’s easier to just try and work it out yourself and learn from it all.

My old Astra van ( that ive mentioned to you before) was in a similar state, working mainly outside over the last 5 years, it has slowly come back, now totally solid and is slowly being prepped for a diy spray job hopefully later in the year. There will be times when all you feel like you are doing is cutting bits out, finding yet more hidden rot, then letting new metal in, but eventually it'll be rock solid.
@SimpsonsClassics

Yea this does sound like a similar sort of project buddy. I guess once your head is above water and the body is right you can then move on from there.

Glad that it's going to live on. How did it get an MOT? Hope you can find a scrap/ accident damaged 244 in better condition and cut out the sections needed. Look forward to amazon project. At least the engine in the 244 isn't scrap.

It’s honestly so shocking that it had a legal mot. It will be saved but would be good if we can find a body cut car. We will see. Stay tuned, we have two amazon builds coming your way 👍

I have a very similar 1978 244DL also in Cypress Green. Love the colour. Only differences, mine is K-Jet and my wipers park left (Australian Design Rules). Good luck with the restoration, they are simple cars and parts are cheap. Welding will make for some great video content.

I'd have run a mile from the car, as although I love 240s from the 1970s, I can't weld. My 1990 740 (B200F) has had piston slap since I've owned it, but it's not got any worse in nearly 21 years :)
@SimpsonsClassics

I think alot of people would have ran. This was bought sight unseen so it was a gamble really.. yeah the old Volvos will keep going with piston slap but we might as well address this while we are there.

I know that you said that finance wasn't an issue with this restoration, but it looks as though it's going to cost a fortune. Personally, I would treat this as a donor car so that any usable parts could help keep better examples on the road. Credit to you both if you're determined to fix it, but I would suggest that you draw up a realistic 'budget' of what it's likely to cost in both cash and time, bearing in mind that any resources you plough into this project means less than you can use on others - including maintenance of daily drivers. Good luck and best wishes.
@SimpsonsClassics

It will definatly not be a parts car, to some we may seem mad but this car be saved, the end value isnt a concern its purely to prove we can save it and also keep another on the road, if it was easy that would be no fun plus doing this way you can all see that things can be saved you just have to want it bad enough. As mentioned in this video, Jackman will move onto his amazon and also continue his classic mini maintenance plus what the rest of the channel will bring you. We thank you for continued support. Regards

That's a pretty horrible car Marc, TBH. On the subject of the MOT, I know how that can come about. I had a MK3 Golf GTi that I restored, it was my wife's daily drive. I had a business with many vehicles and used a garage local to the business for all the MOT's, I had no time then to work on cars at all, so trusted everything to others. The owner and tester was not a young man, like me, in his 60's back then, and that Golf passed it's test every year, no problems. Bear in mind it was my wife's car, I would want everything to be as safe as possible. I sold my share in the business in 2012, so for the next MOT took the car to a good guy I knew whose garage was much nearer to where I live. I got a call about midday from the new tester, saying I needed to call in and see him. I couldn't believe how bad that Golf was. 2 brake pipes had completely crumbled in his hands, the sills were rotten to bits. I was cutting welding and restoring that car for the next year. Sometimes MOT testers become set in their ways and complacent. If you watch Yorkshire Car Restoration, they prove anything can be repaired, and technically, every car they have ever featured on their channel should have been scrapped, so the Volvo is do-able, just break it down to one small job at a time, but you will achieve very little working on it outdoors. Good luck with the car and the channel. PS, I see you have hooked up with one of the best, as in Lewis Whiteland.

Hey Bob yes I can understand how this happens also. It’s a good thing to save the stress of an mot and the expense but I guess like everything it will catch up with you like it has here and with your experience, thankfully your wife never had any issues. This car will be saved in good time but we have some parts to find and plans to make. Oh yes we have hooked up with the best with those guys! Stay tuned for that video 👍
