Christie’s Old Masters Specialist Jonquil O’Reilly and exhibition curator Eloy Martínez de la Pera tour 'Balenciaga and Spanish Painting' in Madrid and discuss the influence of Old Master paintings on the iconic designer’s creations.
Spanish-born Cristóbal Balenciaga (1895-1972), described by Christian Dior as ‘the master of us all’, was one of the most admired and influential fashion designers of all time.
'Balenciaga and Spanish Painting' (18 June- 22 Sept 2019), a fabulous new exhibition at Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza museum, takes a look at the art historical influences on the fashion great’s celebrated creations. The designer constantly studied the history of art and made use of the imagery he found, from the minimalist lines of religious habits to the black-on-black aesthetic of Habsburg court dress.

Do you think this is why white people don’t think of racism as a huge deal? Like I’ve never been to a single white people museum and seen them refer to the ‘Discovery of the New World’ in more accurate terms such as ‘colonialism’.

I saw this exhibit on my summer trip to spain. The show was incredibly weak. Some of the correlations were based solely on color. (A pink bikini being influenced by a pink evening gown worn by a Spanish princessa.) There was so little convincing correlations between Balenciaga vs the artworks. 👎

I noticed that just from this short video. I mean, nothing is more lazy than being literal in influence but from this, I just had the impression that the influences were a stretch and made up. I say all of this, as a massive C. Balenciaga fan.

I really see no similarities outside of color choices.. its probably some kind of ploy to invent something that isn't there..

Austin D Judging things you know nothing about makes you seem really ignorant. The dresses and the art were never meant to be similar, it is their plastic elements and qualities that the artist was concerned with as references when he designed those pieces. I recommend you deeply research Cristóbal Balenciaga’s work and general design theory. You might learn something and you’ll then certainly understand why certain garments were paired with certain paintings. Regards.
