▶️How Ball Mills Work
The following process description is based upon a ball mill used in the hard rock mining industry for liberating minerals from ore, but the operating principle for ball mills used in other industries is the same.
Crushed ore is fed to the ball mill through the inlet; a scoop (small screw conveyor) ensures the feed is constant.
For both wet and dry ball mills, the ball mill is charged to approximately 33% with balls (range 30-45%). Pulp (crushed ore and water) fills another 15% of the drum’s volume so that the total volume of the drum is 50% charged. Pulp is usually 75% solid (crushed ore) and 25% water; pulp is also known as ‘slurry’.
An electric motor is used to rotate the ball mill. As the ball mill rotates, the balls ‘stick’ to the inner surface of the drum due to the centrifugal force created within the drum. At a certain angle, the weight of the balls overcomes the centrifugal force holding them against the drum and they begin to tumble back to the centre line of the ball mill (this area is known as the ‘toe’). In this manner, the ore is reduced in size by both attrition (ore rubbing against other bits of ore) and impact (balls impacting with the ore).
The ore moves gradually through the mill then exits through the discharge port. The discharge port may be covered by a grate to prevent oversized ore exiting the mill, or it may have no grate (overflow type ball mill).
As the balls wear due to abrasion, they are replaced with new balls (‘green’ balls).

A very good talk on how a Ball Mill works. I was in West Africa in 1947 and worked on a Gold Mine and we used Ball Mills, and they were very efficient.

I want to make a small (5 gallon or smaller) ball mill for grinding sulfur, charcoal, etc into VERY fine powder. I considered using a 5 gallon bucket but I don't know if the grinding action occurs between the balls or between the balls and the wall of the mill. If the latter, than perhaps a plastic bucket won't work. Tips? Input? Anything helps.

This is a brilliant video I am using the Ball Mill to describe how it is and why it is we are losing our beaches here in Hawaii. The sand is being crushed by the lava stones that come out from demolished stone walls that have now created a ball mill in the shore break.and the reef has a groove in it where the rocks live. The Government the Corps of Engineers the University of Hawaii have heard what I have to say, but they do not want me to be the messenger. In 2013 they passed a bill in the Legislature that bans taking rocks out of the ocean. We are destroying our sand by law it will continue. I hope that this video will be seen by some legislators or somone who understands science.

PLEASE look up centripetal and centrifugal force. With the F is a non inertial reference and does not exist off paper. the trip one is what is in reality. That being said, other then that great video.

Hi Paul, Yeah, people always get upset about this. I always find it difficult to go with centrifugal, but there is no point mentioning other terms if people don't understand them. We have done other videos discussing the difference between centrifugal and centripetal, but the problem is engrained so deeply in engineering that it is difficult to change. If we tried to clarify this problem when talking about centrifugal pumps, centrifugal separators, centrifugal governors etc. there would be little time left for the actual video content! Jon
