One thing to remember is that seeing them alone isn't anything out of the ordinary but seeing them at lower/higher latitudes than normal is what you really want to look for and be afraid of.

Mostly ive seen green, and only once ive seen it purple. I assume when its purple it is far stronger then, as i assume nitrogen is heavier element so that radiation gets deeper through earths defences..

Because the ozone layer is O³ and the nitrogen is in the atmosphere not in the ozone layer so youll see green, most of the time and not nitrogen because only when radiation are strong enough to reach the atmosphere react with nitrogen gas creates purple
