The Tata Nano Singur controversy was a controversy generated by land acquisition of a proposed Tata Motors automobile factory at Singur in Hooghly district, West Bengal, India. The factory would have been used to build the compact car Tata Nano.
Tata Motors started constructing a factory to manufacture a car, Tata Nano which was estimated to cost $2,500 . The small cars were scheduled to roll out of the factory by 2008.
The state government of West Bengal created the controversy by citing the 1894 land acquisition act rule to conduct an eminent domain takeover of 997 acres (4.03 km2) of farmland on which Tata Motors was supposed to build its factory.[1] The rule is meant for public improvement projects, and the West Bengal government wanted Tata to build in its state. The project was opposed by activists and opposition parties in Bengal.
Leadership positions within the Singur Krishi Jami Raksha Committee ( SKJRC - The Committee to Save the Farmland of Singur) were held by the locally dominant Mahishya community, who are the chasjami malik (landholder) or owner-cultivators of the region

@Harrappa if India breaks up into 30 independent economies, then condition of Gujarat and much of BIMARU states will be like Pakistan. Out of 9 crores population of Bengal there are 2 crores whose mother tongue is Hindi and not Bengali. There are 30 lakh Nepalis. There's large Jharkhandi, Odiya, Punjabi, Marwari population in Bengal. If you remove the large migrant and immigrant population from the population of Bengal then per capita GDP and HDI of Bengal will be among the best in the union of India. Right after 1947 West Bengal has only faced discrimination and economic embargo from the government in New Delhi just like East Bengal used to face from Islamabad prior to 1971. After Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan it is leading on every front and left both Pakistan and India far behind in almost every indicator and parameter. India was not supposed to be governed centrally by one political party but as a federation of autonomous states. This is what the 1946 cabinet mission plan was all about. Both Congress and Muslim League accepted this plan but this plan was vehemently opposed by business houses profiteering under centralized British rule. Since Congress was basically a puppet of these business houses it had to withdraw its consent to the cabinet mission plan. Withdrawal of Congress from the cabinet mission plan led to the partition of India and not Hindu Muslim divide as we have been led to believe. So, 1947 was not independence but transfer of power from the British to the allies of the British. Real independence will only happen when power moves from New Delhi to the states.

I'm from Westbengal. I sadly confirm that one of the reason why Westbengal is behind at this point of time was this singur case. If tata operated their factory here then Westbengal would have grown faster. Because of this tragedy a lot of brands doesn't want to come here in Westbengal as they fear this will happen again

Fact is that this WB/Mamta fiasco caused Tata Nano to be delayed massively which made people lose interest and then the Indian lower middle-class also rejected it and kept buying the Maruti Alto or 800 till it was discontinued. Can someone please explain why in Singur why not in Durgapur industrial area where you can found 1000 acres with relative ease. Durgapur is well connected with road, rail, near to jamshedpur, having good auxiliary industrial base, educational institutions, water from damodar, and very reliable power source and land is not that fertile. But in sigur where land is very fertile. This place are not to far at all...

Left govt wanted to built everything near to Kolkata. Once CM Buddhadev said all Industrialist's first preference to build their factories in Durgapur areas they don't want to see other areas. Left govt had force TATAs to build at Singur. What Mamata did wrong! See said Why govt should acuare lands? why tata not doing itself? why factory on highly furtile land? why 400 acares forcefully captured? If govt gave up 400 acares, they will purchase its against. but they never talked to mamata due to their egos. My question, why Congress and BJP both fuelled Mamata's protest? The government needs to acquire lands before hand , because scattered land over a large area is difficult to individually negotiate. Plus the government can subsidize the land cost ,in return for certain developmental commitments. This is a win win for both. Gujarat has this model. It is fast and efficient. But you people will not get it. Your minds have been brainwashed. Step outside and look at other states. You will come to know of the kind of poverty that WB holds. I wish to come to WB , but my relatives tell me to stay away. My father went back there ,he said his city looked the same as it was 20 years ago. That is your so called development. Mamta Banerjee knows only one thing ,that is to protest, she is not a visionary. 21st century WB needs progressive leaders not Rudimentary 90s Dharna specialists.
