The arrival of the Mongols into the Islamic world brought horrific destruction at an immense scale. Those who wrote at the time of Chinggis Khan’s devastating conquest of the Muslim Khwarezmian Empire present the Mongols as a punishment sent by God. Yet the progeny of Chinggis Khan in 3 of the 4 Mongol Khanates ultimately converted to Islam. The first Mongol prince known to convert was Chinggis’ grandson Berke, Khan of the Golden Horde. Here we’ll explore the matter of his conversion.

Hulagu Khan considers Berke and Nogai to be enemies not their brothers anymore because Berke and Nogai are helping Islam and fighting against their own brothers from the other side

Muslim historian Rashid-al-Din Hamadani quoted Berke Khan as telling his Mongols and Muslim subjects, in protest at the attack on Baghdad: "He (Hulagu) has sacked all the cities of the Muslims, and has brought about the death of the Caliph. With the help of God I will call him to account for so much innocent blood." (see The Mongol Warlords, quoting Rashid al-Din's record of Berke Khan's pronouncement; this quote is also found in The Mamluk-Ilkhanid War)

It's very nice to see you taking interest in the Golden Horde and collaborting with the Jackmeister. Perhaps one day you could cover the Lipka Tatars? I think they are very interesting and quite unique, as a Muslim community thriving in a Late Medieval and Early Modern Christian realm.

I got finished watching Etrugul and this how I learned about all the mongols I love history and have been studying for couple years now. Studying on my own I mean not in school or anything. I just find all this stuff fascinating

There were three kinds of conversions among Mongols 1) Soldiers and Generals- They converted after having interactions with Scholars of Islam. 2) Emperors who converted for power- After the conversion of Soldiers and elites, gaining power without their support was impossible. So, these emperors converted for power but they were loyal to Islam and Sharia 3) Emperors who converted by choice- These Emperors converted in the regions like Golden Horde where soldiers and Generals weren't much muslims. Previous rulers weren't muslims. Infact courts had Budhist and shamanistic influence. Such Emperors converted in this environment after interacting with Muslim scholars.

The Mongols dealt such a blow on the Islamic world that we have lost most knowledge. The great Islamic centers have never been the same since the destruction of Bukhara in Uzbekistan, Nishapur in Iran and Baghdad in Iraq.

If I am not wrong then Pashtuns are those people who speak pashto language.And every Afghans are Pashtun but every Pashtuns are not Afghans. Maybe they came from Gandhara civilization. I don't know about this surely.

Great point! But I think it's to do largely with Islam - Jews are 'People of the Book' so it gives the Pashtuns even more legitimacy in terms of their Islamic-ness

Berke khan's father jochi in the siege of Gurganj seek a peaceful surrender to those muslims defending the city even many mongols died in a bloody siege Jochi still having a contact to the leader inside the city seeking a peaceful surrender to avoid property damage. His brother chagatai grow an hatred to him because of soft attitude to the defender even the cost of many mongols lives. An unknown sources said that While the city is under siege Jochi heard a beautiful adhan prayer from the mosque. Jochi grow a fascination to the religion of the enemy.

I wish Golden horde never fragmented ozbeg Khan was truly a last great mongol Khan of Golden horde after him Golden horde went into decline it doesn't matter Khan was Muslim or not they mongols have their own politics Golden horde was definitely a natural enemy of ilkanate even after hostility between ilkanate and mamluks ended golden horde never stop fighting with ilkanate and even ask mamluks for help but mamluks refuses to help golden horde .ilkanate was also converted to Islam during the reign of Muhammad Gazan Khan who was Muslim and he understands that majority population was Muslim and he will gain more support if he converted specially it will break the argument of Mamluks of Egypt who always says that they were defender of Islam and ofcourse they were but after ilkanate converted to Islam they lose some support definitely so politics also matters

Some Mongols did. In one source, Juzjani, Berke took the name of Jalal al-Din. The first Il-Khan to convert to Islam, Tegüder, took the name Ahmad. Another Il-khan, Ölejitu, took several names as he converted between a number of religions over his life. His brother, the Il-Khan Ghazan, took the name Mahmud, while the Golden Horde Khan Özbeg, took the name Muhammad. But others, like the Golden Horde khan Töde-Möngke (the first Golden Horde Khan after Berke to be a Muslim) is not known to have taken a new name on his conversion.
