I'm from Kolkata. My grandpa lived through direct action day. Most of the violence happened in the central part of the city. there were rallies calling for jihad and death to kafirs, towards the evening bands of young Muslim boys mostly underage, took up crude arms and attacked the immigrant neighbourhood. There was retailiation after which violence spread to the rest of the city. One of the goals was to purge non-muslims from the city. It was a British army officer who ordered curfew and shoot at sight orders, which ultimately cooled the situation. Although Gandhi's fast to death gets the credit for it. One of the worst incidents that grandpa narrated was our then neighbour, a young widow, was abducted by some boys who used to play in the masjid playground and raped and then mutilated her body. After this incident there were clear demarcations in Muslim and non-muslim neighbourhood, which largely exist to this day. With non-muslim I mean all other religions hindu, Sikh, Christian, Buddhist even Jews. We all coexist in the city. Although most Jews have left for a better life, after the communist government came.
