When playing at the top tennis level, every single detail counts. And when players play each other very often, they start to pick up on some details. Andre Agassi and Boris Becker were some of the best tennis players in history, and they had a pretty intense rivalry. Agassi came out on top of this rivalry, and - according to him - it was because of one small detail: Boris Becker's tongue.

I wonder why nobody else figured this out. Didn't Becker have a coach? Didn't other players observe? Damn, Agassi was a mastermind to not tell Becker until he retired.

When so much concentration is focused on the game and technique, sometimes the smallest things that are not game-related are missed. Same thing happened with baseball when the game was broken down statistically rather than for ability.

Exactly same thought. But as German I guess it was just background. Meaning: In Germany nobody was raised then watching Baseball. Because even with rare stats back then it should have been eye opening how Becker s rather good record against Agassi had such a huge turnaround after first years. From American perspective surprising it took Agassi that long to figure out. Would be ingeresting if McEnroe and other US pros realized that as well!? If an opposing pitcher is tipping pitches in Baseball, something similar to this Situation, many teams or hitters figure this out within first 5 or 10 Minutes. They crush that pitcher who at least within next weeks works to fix it. So his own Organisation and also other Players tell him soon why he is that predictable. Even with less Stats back then in all sports, I m pretty sure, coaches with Baseball background would have told Boris why his strongest weapon, his sevice, lost that much impact. So to many Germans this sounds like eye opening, in Baseball this is part of the game. Finding these kind of weaknesses that give you an advantage

Great video but the information is wrong. The head to head between them was 10-4. After their first 3 meetings,Agassi beat Becker 8 straight times,lost one and then beat him two more times. The final head to head was 10-4 for Agassi

There have been some pitchers do that in baseball, it is called tipping their pitches. It is very logical to think Becker was doing that

Great one, thanks. Agassi, yeah, one of the greatest receivers back then, surely he watched and analysed his main rivals. And yes, of course, it's not a tongue, or eyes movement, it's every key moment that been analysed plus Andre's pure talent that gave him that magic on receive.

It was also because Agassi had probably the greatest serve return ever! Becker did break the run at Wimbledon in 95, which was a brilliant comeback, Becker was 6-2, 4-1 double break down but came back to win in 4.

It’s also likely that, Andre needed to get good at spotting this *just on the margin*, and tilt the odds slightly into his favor, enough to deflate Boris’ confidence. Once the game is lost in the mind, reality just follows.

I loved watching Agassi. He played in a period that was dominated by big servers, so having someone who was so ridiculously good at returning meant you actually got a chance to watch some good rallies. Otherwise it was just serve > return (if you were lucky) > volley and done.

In order 2 anticipate d intentions of a long term rival u gotta pay attention to his body language u know in sports like Boxe athletes do this all d time but mr Andre Agassi took this skill 2 d next level reading Becker's serve (who could never think he tipped his own hand by d tongue of course) it's roughly speaking kinda like magic trick also bcz it takes eagle eye in order 2 sight 10 feet far from u something tiny like that. Unbelievable.

I do think it gave Agassi an advantage. He had a great run h2h against Becker after his first 3 losses. He never got that against Sampras who also had similar game play with a big serve.
@MrTresto
@MrTresto 5 ай бұрын
Sampras was just better than Becker in EVERY DIMENSION - yes serve and serve disguise, but he also moved better, had a better forehand, jumped higher, better touch, particularly for hard volleys, etc. And of course his mental strength just made him seem invincible, he just was relentless... Which is why Sampras won 14 slams, is considered one of the greatest of all time just behind Federer/Nadal/Djokovic, and definitely the greatest of the 90s, while Becker is a "80s-90s good player" with 6... It's nothing to scoff at but I just don't think Sampras and Becker are in the same league.

Perhaps he doesn’t do it all the time. But if Becker does the pattern 60-70% of the time it could prove decisive. A lot of card playing is just making a bet based on the percentages. If you can identify there is a 60% chance of a card being there, and that’s when you make a bet. And conversely if you identify there is only a 30% chance your card will show up you don’t bet, overall you can win the card match. Same principle with Agassi.
@jemand8462
@jemand8462 Жыл бұрын
@@gj1234567899999 you have 3 possible serves: Left, right, body. 33% each. He sticks his tongue out 100% of the time. So in 33% you're wrong. Now, if in 66% of cases he sticks it out in the same direction, in 33% he doesn't. That means in 33% of 66% you're wrong. That is 22%. In total, you are wrong in 55%. Which means the majority of serves, you are wrong, which means if you just randomly choose on of the three options, you are correct 55% of the time, 10% points more then if you think you know where he's serving. As you are all about statistics, you should change your mind now.
