He's from New Orleans, and he was a guitarist but he got injured from a gunshot to one of his fingers, then turned to playing primarily keyboard. He's definitely one of a kind.

"Such A Night" is his other signature song.

Dr. Joh was an incredibly interesting and talented person. He was a legendary performer, and his live shows were unforgettable events. He won 6 Grammy awards and put out 30 albums even though he really only had this one big radio hit. Dr. John is also in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2011). He was also a powerhouse behind the scenes as a song writer and studio musician. He made contributions to hundreds of songs and albums by a multitude of other artists. He also popped up in lots of movies and TV shows usually appearing as himself. A very unique and interesting individual. Oh Yeah, he had an honorary Doctorate Degree from Tulane University.

Mac Rebenack is legit. He’s from the ghetto of New Orleans, he just happens to be white. As a young teenager, he was already a hot session player as a guitar player. Then he had a finger shot off in a drug deal gone bad, so he switched to keys. He played on some of the funkiest records of all time, because not only is New Orleans the birthplace of jazz, it’s also the birthplace of funk, that heady gumbo of Caribbean and southern rhythms that is uniquely New Orleans. He took the name Dr. John after a Senagalese/Haitian voodoo medicine man, famous for selling his voodoo charms, called grisgris, not coincidentally the name of Dr John’s first, amazingly psychedelic funk record.

"How can he be so funky?" That is pure New Orleans Yattitude, baby! His real name was John Malcolm "Mac" Rebennack - he took his stage name from a famous hoodoo practitioner in New Orleans. You should check out some of his other songs like "Revolution", "I Walk on Gilded Splinters", "How Come My Dog Don't Bark When You Come Around", "Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya", "Iko Iko", "Such a Night", "Mardi Gras Day", Litanie Des Saints"...just to name a few. We lost Dr. John in June 2019 - and he is very missed.

And adding to the funk is the fact that the backing band in the album is basically New Orleans legends The Meters.

Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. (November 20, 1941 - June 6, 2019), better known by his stage name Dr. John, was an American singer and songwriter. His music combined New Orleans blues, jazz, funk, and R&B.

I saw Dr. John perform this live at a blues festival in Portland in 2016. I was grateful to be able to see him in person before he passed away in 2019 at the age of 77. My college roommate and I used to listen to him when we were in college in the late 60's.

Dr John is an amazing chameleon of blues styling. He's played with Sonny and Cher, the Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa, Neil Diamond, and many others as a top-tier studio musician. You hear his rolling piano in the background and it's unmistakable. Take a listen to the studio version of Leon Redbone playing "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" (another artist to check out eventually) and you'll hear Dr John on the keys.

The good Doctor (Mac Rebenak) always put on an epic show. Was thrilled meeting him a few times. It’s his fault that he talked us into visiting New Orleans, our fav US destination #RIPMAC

Born and raised in New Orleans. The New Orleans funk scene is phenomenal - you need to start with The Meters and Eddie Bo, then The Neville Brothers, Dr. John of course, then you can move on to our legendary piano players, Professor Longhair, Henry Butler and the list goes on and on. I remember a late night back in 1992, the Meters had reformed and we were trippin balls watching them play at Tipitinas, dancing our buts off and I look to my left at the cat jammin alongside of me and it’s Bill Murray. Back in the 70s Paul McCartney rented out the QE2 and had the Meters play a show. The Meters are the funkiest band, next to P-Funk.

Glad you enjoyed Dr John! He was an amazing artist from New Orleans - you'll find many references to voodoo in his songs. His early album, Gris Gris, is an interesting trip through the local culture. Sadly he passed in 2019 but I had the pleasure of seeing him perform in 2015. His second line in New Orleans is on KZfaq.

Your reaction just cracked me up, Harri! Malcolm John 'Mac' Rebennack AKA Dr. John was a total badass. I had the pleasure of seeing his show while he was stil billing himself as the Night Tripper! He came bopping on stage with ful New Orleans injun headdress and proceeded to funk the place down. He actually recorded a song live with Tom Scott (on Tom 's Apple Juice LP) called '(How Can I Be) So White and So Funky?' where the audience sings along. Check out the title track to his last album called 'Locked Down' it will give you chills.He does a fantastic version of Iko Iko as well.

I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert several times. Such a versatile performer! I love his funk, but my favorite album of his is "In a Sentimental Mood", his take on Great American songbook tunes such as My Buddy, Making Whoopie (with Rickie Lee Jones) and the title instrumental song. Backed up by a full orchestra, it is absolutely gorgeous and the best version of this song I have ever heard. Besides his unique voice, he was a stellar pianist!

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. John backstage at the buffet table at "The Hot and Spicy Food Festival" in Atlanta in 1993 or 94, I think. My band was playing one of the tiny stages, but we all got to enjoy the crawfish backstage! I was directly across from him, and when we made eye contact, I said, "It's such an honor to meet the one and only Mac Rebenak". He grabbed his chest like he was having a heart attack and said, "How's a kid your age know my real name?" with a big smile on his face. I said I grew up watching The Last Waltz over and over again, and I always really loved 'Such A Night'". He said, "That's groovy baby, that's groovy!". What a great memory! I believe he's from New Orleans Luisiana in the southern part of the United States. Known for Mardi Gra and Jazz, along with the strange practices of Voodoo, and other Dark Pegan religious practices. This man was an odd fit to the Rock scene in the early 70s, but it worked really well. And yes, D. John had some real funk about him.

New Orleans royalty , played often with The Meters, Allen Toussaint, and other New Orleans heavy hitters, besides his own projects . Even played with Frank Zappa for a while. Often wore wild attire. I met him a couple times , very cool and approachable cat.

Dr John also played his share of old=time jazz and blues, partnering several times with Leon Redbone.. Their duet on'Frosty the Snowman' was quite popular. Dr John's music was also featured in Disney's 'The Princess And The Frog.'

I've seen the Doctor play live twice, in Munich, Germany. Once around 1990 together with Johnny Winter, and the second time around 2010. He was awesome both times.

I know I'm late to the comments, but the band here is George Porter on bass, Joseph Modeliste on drums, Leo Nocentelli on guitar, Art Neville on organs, and Allen Toussaint filling in, basically some of the best musicians New Orleans had at the time. Most of those guys were also the Meters check out Look-Ka Py Py if you haven't already, one of the foundations of funk music.

Dr John is a New Orleans icon, He’s one of the Funkiest men who ever lived. He lived and breathed New Orleans music which is rooted in African rhythms and yeah.....the whole city is one big ghetto really. So there’s that! I went to his second line after he died. It was huge. You should do a reaction to New Orleans 2nd line music or brass bands. Which he was associated with. He was a Mardi Gras Indian and very intrenched in Nee Orleans African American culture. As far as connections to others, “The Night Tripper” is as unique an artist to be found anywhere. His catalog is absolutely worthy of a deep dive, that so perfectly represents the musical gumbo that is New Orleans, R&B, rock, zydeco and FUNK. Legend.

I grew up in New Orleans and while I was in college, we'd go to local bars and listen to him, the Meters, Irma Thomas, The Neville Bros and a host of Nola greats. The seventies in Nola were awesome!

There's a lot of great comments about Dr. John below. I sat 10 ft. away from and I saw him in huge venues. He was always terrific and was the pre-eminent rock, funk, soul, pop, blues studio and live pianist in America. 'Right Place, Wrong Time' was such a smash hit that it led to the good Doctor being the highest earning artist in the world that year.

I remember this coming on the radio late at night in the early 70s. I had my transistor radio with the little earpiece. What great music, what luck to be around as a teenager. That New Orleans funk is something else! I love the ultra funky guitar solo.

He was affiliated with, wrote many songs and played on many of the early R&B songs out of New Orleans in the fifties. Jerry Byrne, Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns. He was originally a guitar player until a finger was shot off.

I will never forget driving all the way to San Diego from Simi Valley, CA. in a VW Van with my Vietnam Veteran friend and my best friend to see Dr. John back in the day and was it worth it!!! Yes, we sang all the way home! What a show they put on! Wish I could find footage of that show!
