Several suggestions are made to reduce the likelihood of a cat catching garden birds. We look quickly at the evolutionary biology behind the behaviour, the conservation biology of the issue - domestic cats are introduced predators in an ecosystem they have not evolved in, plus some practical measures that can be taken to reduce garden bird mortality due to cats.

Hi, you seem very knowledgeable, can you help me with some advice please. We live in the country side where mice are plentiful. So our male cat likes to bring in mice, sometimes dead, but most annoyingly usually alive. It’s getting ridiculous now where it’s like 3-4 mice a day & that’s with limiting his access to the cat flap. He hunts day & night. He’s always got cat food available 24/7 but he’s a young male cat & he’s a hunter.. I don’t have a problem with him hunting, but how do I stop him from bringing them into the house.. I’ve tried thinking of a way to modify the cat flap to make it more awkward for him to go through with a mouse in his mouth but not sure how to create something.. Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated Thank you

Thank you for this. Yes. You have a few options. You could buy a commercially-available collar that emits a sound when it detects that your cat is about to pounce upon rodent prey. Alternatively, you could purchase a bell on your cat's collar to render hints unsuccessful. I don't know how much control you have over the land around you, but if you are the landowner or controller you could trap the mice. We did this with rats on the island of Mauritius to safeguard populations of endangered birds (look up the Pink Pigeon Project). But note that that is potentially a massive project in terms of resources and you would have to consult local laws to see if you could do it. But I think the best thing is as follows. Find a friend who is very practical, a skilled manual worker who is also a creative thinker. Having sourced such a person, explain your problem and ask if they have a solution. Remember, there are plenty of people who possess such skills and love just such a challenge as this. You just have to find them. Please stick with the channel because it will develop. Let me know how you get on.

@@thepracticalanimal where can I find a collar that emits a sound?
@thepracticalanimal
@thepracticalanimal 2 жыл бұрын
@@Grace-mb4pc Hi Grace. That was recommended to me a veterinary colleague. What you could try is searching on the internet. Or do what we did and get an electronic box that goes in your garden if you have one and emits a sound repellent to cats when they pass within range.

My cat struggled to catch mice with a bell but I watched him once an i discovered he would try his best to not move but couldn't get any, if your worried about the birds maybe get bird tables but then it's encouraging the birds an feeding them probly even worse so you just can't win lol

My cat brings birds at 9 to 10 p.m and then dont eat them just put them under the bed and we have to take them from him. His food is always available and he is an indoor cat. He bring birds from our terrace. I think he have started doing this after i have bought him some mice type toys.

Looks like he is pouncing on songbirds when they land on your terrace. Have you tried putting a bell on him?

My cat is a right little murderer, I don't mind nice and rats but she's just killed what looks like a juvenile magpie! So sad watching that little thing take its last few juddering breaths was heartbreaking. Great advice

Having experienced something similar, we have just bought an electronic deterrent with which we are experimenting. Right now is exactly the time of year that our breeding birds have broods that are fledging, and are therefore at their most vulnerable. The solution has to be an intergrated range of responses. Water pistols have a role, too.

@@thepracticalanimal Hi I've found myself here after just watching our cat bring in a beautiful young blackbird. They have loud bells on but we have had 2 birds in 2 weeks and I need to do something additional. Are you able to share more on the electronic deterrent? Thank you

I am very sorry to hear that So, I am in an ongoing challenge but have found a combination of approaches effective. Cat repellent plants are plants that give off a fragrance cats find unpleasant. Also, coffee grounds in water deposited where the cats go. There are commercially available harmless but uncomfirtable studs that can be put down. Thinking of launching a campaign on the issue...

Thank you for your comment. This thread reminds me of a recent video: the John Courton interview. I particularly like the bird feeding station in the background: lots of protective cover close by. Do take a look at that video if you haven't seen it already
