As the manhunt continues for the Clapham chemical attack suspect Abdul Ezedi, James O'Brien delves into the origins of his story, including the fact he's a registered sex offender.
Another fact that has come to light is that Abdul converted to Christianity which was the reason he was granted asylum in the UK. This has sparked considerable outcry from former Home Secretaries Suella Braverman and Priti Patel, but James isn't particularly convinced they've got much ground to stand on.

It matters because in some countries, according to Islamic Law a muslim who rennounces his faith (apostate) is punishable by death, imprisonment etc. The potential for this persecution upon any return forms a basis for an asylum claim.

"How can you prove you're a Christian" is the wrong question. Or at least it's an irrelevant question. Religious people of many persuasions are some of the worst amongst us. It's only really their propaganda that would suggest otherwise.

Well it's not even that they're the worst offenders necessarily. It's that their backs are covered in a way that the secular world isnt which permits all manner of wrongdoing to go unchecked. Unaccountable for reasons that if we were to really give it due consideration would be based on ideas that don't hold any weight in small cults but because organised, institutionalised religions began before civil society really established itself they're exempt from the same scrutiny. Their argument is 'we believe we are somehow superior in all facets, that is what we believe and don't you dare challenge us'. They can dress it up as sweet as they like but they are based on really destructive, alienating, duplicitous, coercive and corrupt tenets. They are businesses that profit from their followers. They always have been, but once again are exempt from due process. Of course they're going to attract wrongdoers. They've set up a structure that's better than a private island for harbouring the people with the worst intentions.

Perhaps a Christian may be judged by their thoughts words and actions. But then the problem with that is the holy handbook that exists to give guidance contains within it some most unchristian direction. The holy handbook is of course an agreed compilation based upon what the church wanted to promote at the time. But to know, the church left books out of the bible.

Plus when they do get to the point of applying, Braverman and Patel have made it so the application has to be completed online and in English… some asylum seekers do not have access to technology nor do they have the opportunity to learn English before they come, especially if they have to flee in the middle of the night. All of the boat and Rwanda saga is to hide the mess they have made of this country. Plain and simple.
