Join us in this thought-provoking video as we delve into the pressing issue of weekend subway service and explore ways to improve the commuting experience for millions of urban dwellers. It is no surprise that weekend service in the New York City Subway is lackluster, but that doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon.

Another idea when it comes to weekend service is to run extra service when you have major events, parades, etc. The MTA sometimes does that, but they don't do that enough.

Agreed Brenda. As a compromise during the summer months similar to the Rockaway Park Shuttle being in recent years extended to the Ozone Park/Rockaway Blvd station from late May to early September , run the “B” as well. I would propose between 161st Street/Yankee Stadium and Brighton Beach weekends 8am-11pm every 15-20 minutes, if full 365 day a week is not possible.

@@MysticTransitowever this would need adjustments to the A and C trains before having b trains run all times but for late nights where it would run between 207th or whatever its southern terminal as it needs somewhere to terminate during late nights. A trains to 168th street via Cpw local all times, b trains via cpw Express and c trains would have their 1970's route.

A transit OG here with some ideas: 1) Bring back the B on weekends (145th to Brighton Beach). 2) If no weekend B, then bring back the K train (it was the AA when I was a kid) and have it run its old route (168 to WTC). Also, if No B, then offer limited express Q train service in Brooklyn. 3) Run the M deeper into Manhattan on weekends. Perhaps to 57th St-6th Ave? As a side idea, the MTA should post weekend service maps on the digital screens on all of the platforms. I've helped many tourists and infrequent riders from getting lost in the network because the weekday maps show trains that are not running.

Mystic Transit, I have something to tell you. On June 24, 2023, my son and his grandfather went out into the Rockaways for a visit to it's stations. When they came back to Jay Street- Metrotech though, they had to wait 55 minutes for an R train (the line that never comes). A downtown R train did come, but the doors didn't open and the train went back the opposite way. The R platforms were getting overcrowded as several uptown N, Q and R trains stopped but not a single downtown train came on the R platforms. And now my son is discouraged and doesn't go out to the subway on weekends. Thank you.

Let’s face it, the (R) Train can’t cover QBL lcl all on it’s own & by adding the (M) Train back into the mix coupled with the (M) & (R) Trains running 12 Trains per hour, you are effectively increasing frequencies to every 5 minutes on QBL lcl whilst (E) & (F) Trains can run 16 Trains per hour on QBL Exp! ;)

In my opinion we need more improved service on the Nostrand Avenue Line by adding the 5 train or just keeping the 2 train run their 8 minutes schedule because I live near Flatbush Avenue station so I will normally take the 2 train on weekends, since Flatbush Avenue is the first/last stop there is not much people but at Newkirk Avenue, Beverly Road, Church Avenue, Winthrop Street, Sterling Street, and President Street a lot of people go in the train and makes it crowded but at Franklin Avenue most people get off to take the 4 train which makes the platform crowded, if the 5 train ran to Brooklyn on weekends, we could have less crowding on the platforms and on the trains

The main concern is roger’s Junction as the 5 train needs to cut in front of the 2 and 3 trains to head to the Nostrand Avenue line. So a possibility is to rebuild roger’s junction from scratch (which will take quite some time) then extend the 5 train to Brooklyn

A few things: 1. Subway frequency should NOT be higher than bus frequency as the Subway has higher capacity. Although buses can operate at Policy Headways of 30 minutes (while the Subway is not advised to operate that these headways), the Highest Weekend frequency should be 4 to 6 minutes on the Subway and 3 to 4 minutes on the bus. 2. In order to prevent the Subway lines from operating at 15 to 20 minute headways, there's suggestions for shorter trains at higher frequencies when the demand is low. A 4 or 5 car train operating every 7 to 10 minutes is better than an 8 to 10 car train operating every 15 to 20 minutes (unless it is along a branch), however in order to meet the capacity, it is more advisable to operate 8 to 10 car trains every 8 to 15 minutes than to operate 4 to 5 car trains every 4 to 7 minutes. 3. There's definitely agreement on having the (B) operate on Weekends, but I would extend it into The Bronx where it is to terminate at Bedford Park Blvd. This is to improve on the (D) line. 4. The MTA should consider restoring the Brown (M), and the orange (V) line. The Brown (M) will terminate at Chambers Street on Weekends. The Orange (V) will operate from Forest Hills to 2nd Avenue as QBL Local and 6th Avenue Local. The (J) and (Z) should extend to Bay Parkway so that the (D) gains more service on the West End line. 5. If the MTA is to consider a new LIGHT RAIL network, this will allow for Subways and buses to operate more frequently. A LIGHT RAIL network at headways of 4 to 6 minutes during Peak Hours, 7 to 12 minutes during Middays and Weekends, 10 to 15 minutes during Evenings and 30 minutes during Late Nights will allow the Subways to operate full 8 to 10 car trains every 6 to 10 minutes on Weekends, and bus routes every 3 to 8 minutes on Weekends.

The Z specifically to Bay Pkwy would be good as it would help assist the R on the 4th Av LCL Line as the LCL J should have no purpose to be extended far away from Broad St. But cost do play a factor as well as service frequency. The J/Z don’t have enough cars to produce such service pattern and we can’t take away more cars from the L. If the C was to replace its R179’s with brand new 10 car R211’s then thas a topic worth talking about again because that way the 8 cars can be donated to the J/L/Z and the R179s can be used on the L as well because of CBTC. With more cars on the J/L/Z they should have more then enough cars to run via 4 Av

It’s not really easy to increase service when every weekend there is some planned service changes. The 2 trains running every 12 minutes was done to reduce congestion whenever the 1 2 and 3 trains were all sharing a section of track. This was apparent on the 5 D N and Q trains, they all had to be ranged between 10 and 20 minutes because they have to reduce service to not have all those shared tracks congested
@MysticTransit
@MysticTransit Жыл бұрын
It is true that frequency is sometimes reduced because multiple lines are sharing tracks, however, in a situation like the (2), no (3) trains were running. (2) trains ran from 148th St to Flatbush. Yes the (1/2) were sharing tracks, but on 7th Avenue, those local tracks allow for 30tph or a train every 2 mins. Split that in half and you get 15 for both the (1) and (2), which is a train every 4 or so minutes. 12 min gaps are unacceptable during rush and even midday hours.

@@MysticTransitAnd if you don’t mind adding on. Yes they do need to include the B train on weekends. It’s so much more crucial from Harlem to the West Side since the C train is just doing too much of the work and even so the C’s schedule is super slow during that period. Weekend service should look similar to weekday midday, makes it easier to navigate. No W service or 5 train in Brooklyn is okay because lines of the same color (and trunk) run along most of it. Also make clear announments on trains when a transfer is out of service (ex. on the A train, don't automatically tell us at 14th Street there's transfer to the L train if the L train is not working. At Fulton Street prompt us to take the 4/5 train and at Broadway Junction tell us the L train won't be going to Manhattan).

I think when transit fans bring up induced demand, it's negative in the context of cars. But running more buses and trains induces demand too, as crowding falls, multiple transfer trips take shorter and waiting times are cut. I think the MTA estimates that doubling service increases ridership by 40%, but there's plenty of reason to believe it's higher than that. Running more weekend service would increase total ridership, and allows trains to spend more time running and making fares rather than sitting in yards. I think doing 2 full shift lengths at least 6 minute frequencies at full weekday service during the day would be wonderful for both the MTA and riders.

The most annoying thing on weekends is the lack of the B train. Passengers going from 53rd St or QBL to the upper west side on Central Park West must either make an annoying transfer to the D train at 7th Av-53rd St to then make another transfer to the C at columbus circle, or take the E train all the way down to 42nd St because there is no underpass at 50th st. Maybe the solution to this problem would be to build an underpass at 50th st

Exactly 💯% right. You know why. Because people have to wait for the D trains in the Bronx and the Q trains in Brooklyn they have to wait for a while. And people wave to get where they need to go. Even on the weekends the B trains could definitely terminate at 145 street Manhattan if the C trains is not running between 168 street do to CBTCS. IF they want to send the B trains to Bedford park on the weekends fine. That's if the C trains are not going to 168 street on the weekends it could terminate at 145 street and let the B trains run up to Bedford park to Brighton Beach ⛱️.

The last month, I've had some really strange experiences getting around on weekends that you'd think a multi-decade native could account for but some of the things legit felt alien enough (F train at Atlantic Av - Barclays on the 4th Ave line and a wacky service pattern with no M line trains when I needed to get to Central Av station and the L was [at first] sounding like it wasn't going beyond halfway through the line being the two most notable moments) that I just couldn't say if it was personal negligence or "weekends aint shit". If we're aiming to both make transit more attractive to people who are always on the move in "the city that never sleeps" and as a result of that, increase the amount of things to make the service better, we really need to figure out a better balance between proper weekend subway service and system maintenance times as soon as possible.

The MTA has a lot of maintenance and repairs to get done from years of neglect. It sucks but they have to do these repairs to get lines in working order. It was definitely frustrating this past year with no express bronx D trains and often no weekend service, but the work has to get done to repair the system :/

Mark what should be on the table if needed and it can be done is a full uninterrupted closure of a branch for 5-7 days straight once a year. Even during the Weekday Rush. That is if it can mean full 24/7 service for the rest of the year as well. For instance the White Plains Road line between 241st Street and 180 Street would be closed for 5-7 days straight once a year. Much better than the almost endless weekend detours and partial closures on that very #2 and #5 lines for years now. Those in that area would use say the nearby Metro North line between Wakefield and Fordham in addition to the BX10 (which would run 24/7) and shuttle buses. That is an example of thinking outside the box which the Execs at the MTA fails to do.

On weekends when there’s planned work along the Lexington Ave line, it’s ridiculous waiting for the 5 trains when service is reduced from 12 minutes to 20 minutes or more when the 4, 5, and 6 lines share tracks. I know there’s low weekend ridership on the 5 trains more than the 4 and 6 trains, so I don’t mind the 12 minute wait. But if we’re all paying the same fare, we all should be getting the same descent service.

@@MysticTransit What I am trying to say is that all lines should operate at all times of the day and night, including weekends, holidays, and late nights, 24 hours per day 7 days per week. However all lines operate at different frequencies at certain times of the day/night. For example, the (B) train should operate its entire route at all times, including weekends, holidays, and late nights, instead of operating on weekdays only.

I feel like the M train service is very limited and it may be a hassle to transfer to the F or J, so I'd propose an extnesion of weekend M service from Essex St to somehwhere in Manhattan, so the Myrtle Avenue Line residents and Williamsburg residents can have a one seat ride to Manhattan. 96 St, 57 St, maybe all the way to 71st Av (which may be a hassle). 145 St, Bedford Park Blvd (of course, if the B has a problem)

I never understood why the MTA would eliminate certain subway service like the B on the weekends. No one should have to wait 20 MINUTES for any train. And when the train shows up, it's always crowded. Have every line run on the weekends, maybe not as frequently as weekday service. But the MTA needs to understand that people do a lot on the weekends, whether they go out for entertainment, have appointments, or work.

For me it should be B and W should not run, W isn’t really needed and the N and R can handle Broadway local well while I see the B does cause problems when it’s not around but I really don’t see any point in making it run on weekends, it has no unique stations. I haven’t gone to eastern parkway often on the weekends but it isn’t really long compared to Central Park west and Queens blvd. These 3 lines have 4 types of trains running, 2 express and 2 local, on weekends in queens blvd and Central Park west there is a local train gone meaning more wait time for the local station whereas in eastern parkway there is an express train gone meaning there is no affect on local stations and less waiting time. For me I think the only train that needs improvement is the M, running its full route to first hills 71st Ave is something that needs to happen, F trains are so crowded at Essex as people get off the M and continue their trip to midtown Manhattan causing super crowdedness on the F, that is a huge problem in my opinion, the M is needed to help the F cuz the F isn’t going to handle 6ve local on its own, and in Queens blvd it’s even worse, like 12 minutes waiting for the freaking R train is unacceptable considering QB also has a stop next to one of the popular malls in QCM which is crowded in weekends because of family and events, the M is also needed there to help the R, 8 cars isn’t a problem it’s still enough to handle ridership because weekend service isn’t as big as weekday. So the M should run to forest hills at all times except late nights, where it terminates at Essex unless there is a big event going on like the new year’s celebration in Times Square but yea that’s my opinion.

To improve weekend service, this is what I propose: 1. Have the B replace the C to 168th Street. The B will run local along CPW with the D while the A and C run express. The C will run along Grand Concourse with the D. The C will also run express with the A along 8th Avenue, but will still run local along Fulton Street. 2. Have the M run to 96th Street with the Q, and the G run to Forest Hills-71st Avenue via QBL local with the R. I was originally thinking about sending the N to Forest Hills during weekends, but that would mean cutting off service along the Astoria branch. Of course we could have the W run as a shuttle on Astoria, but service would be rather redundant. So I’d rather have the G return to Forest Hills during the weekends, or perhaps have it go a tad bit further to Jamaica Center with the E or Jamaica-179th Street with the F. We can also have it run with FULL 10-car trains instead of just 5 since QBL is pretty busy no matter what day of the week. 3. Replace R train service along 4th Avenue local with the J and Z. The J will take over for the R along 4th Avenue local, while the D and N continue running express. The J will run to Bay Ridge-95th Street while the Z will be given an actual purpose to exist, by running with the D along West End, to Bay Parkway. However, the Z will be cut back to Broadway Junction. No skip-stop service will be present on the BMT Jamaica line, but the Z will run express between Broadway Junction and Marcy Avenue. And that’s all. Let me know what you guys think!

1. CPW doesn't need three expresses. I'd run the B weekends from 145th Street to Prospect Park weekends. 2. The M should run its full route to Forest Hills on Weekends. It'll beef up service on both Queens Blvd. and 6th Avenue. 3. Leave the R alone. People from Bay Ridge want both midtown and downtown. South Brooklyn riders do not want Nassau Street. I'd rebrand the Z as a weekday Broadway Brooklyn local from Broadway Junction to Chambers Street. (the former BMT 14) This will allow J trains to run express from Broadway Junction to Marcy Avenue weekdays in the direction of traffic.

@@pbatommyI agree. The R isn’t gonna be replaced in Brooklyn. Absolutely not, putting the J train via 4th Avenue is stupid. Also it’s better to also leave the CPW as it is, cause they’re not running three trains all on the express track

If they could run trains every 10 to 15 minutes for every line, I would be fine with it. I agree the "B" should be added. I also say the "M". Why is it fair for lower use 4th Avenue to get 24/7 Express service, while higher use Brighton Line can't at least have an express service on the Weekend. And even with the combine B/C service via Central Park is miserable waiting for. Just imagine waiting for the lone "C" train when the "B" is not running. It is one reason people prefer the more reliable #1 train. And when ever I'm at 50th Street and 8th Avenue, I walk down a long flight of stairs to get the "E". Making one of few stations that the main station receive less service.
@qolspony

For those of you who wasn't alive in the 1980s. I could remember the "A" being local outside rush hours. The B (CPW)/CC was only rush hours service and the AA was part time non rush hours. And although it had 4 60ft cars, which people ran for, it was more reliable than the B and C. The AA almost covered the full length of Manhattan. I heard the service was better one time than what it became in the 70s and 1980s along CPW. The A, AA, B, C, CC and D train. How these lines ran in the 1950s would be a history lesson for me as I was born in 1970. They were so many options before the cutbacks started in the 1960s.
