How Can You Increase Your Confidence To Do Figure 8's On Your Motorcycle?

Formula For U-Turns & Figure 8 - Throttle + Clutch + Rear Brake x Confidence = 18'x36' (Easy!) Of course this is not an actual mathematical formula, but it is the formula that needs to be implemented to successfully maneuver your motorcycle through a figure 8 within the confines of 18 feet by 36 feet.
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

3:50 - when you’re being mimicked in the background 😂 I had been riding for decades before signing up for a class in 2008. My dad (Cop for 46 years) died the week before and I was a mess. So much so, that I literally got lost in the figure 8. Lit.er.a.lly 😂 Now: I can do a u-turn, and sometimes nearly perfectly…unless I am being watched (judged) - I get pucker factor, go wide, or have to start duck walking it. Growing up doing every competitive sport out there from the age of five can really F-Up your psyche!

I'm a new rider. Got my HD Sportster back in March. I practiced in my rural, woodsy neighborhood in Nh. Lots of hills, curves and culdesacs. By the time I got out on the main roads I was use to tight turns so I felt like I had a ton of room. At the end of the season I went to a parking lot a few times to practice. I was doing u-turns in 2 spaces but getting frustrated when trying the figure 8 in 4 spaces. I go over a couple of feet. It's encouraging watching you do it so smoothly! I'll practice more in the spring. I'm almost there!

Hey. Thanks for watching and I hope you’re subscribed. 😊 You’re doing excellent! So don’t beat yourself up. If you want to make the figure 8’s easier, pull in the clutch all the way in (out of the friction zone) while transitioning from a right turn to a left turn and vice-versa. It sounds to me like the reason you’re going over the line in due to a delayed transition. Taking power away from that rear wheel only during the transition, will make turning the handlebars much easier.

It’s my pleasure. 😊 Thank you very much! I know exactly what happened Nick. Well not exactly, but I’m pretty sure I can narrow it down. The only way a bike will go down is if there isn’t sufficient power going to the rear wheel or if the lean angle is exceeded. I’m going to guess you either weren’t giving it enough throttle, or you had enough throttle, but you weren’t in the friction zone enough or at all.

I heard you mention in one of your videos one time, that you’re scraping the floorboards and that’s the only scratches on your bike. But if you look underneath your floorboards you might have a little peg that is there for scraping. I know on my electric glide standard I do not have them but on my wife’s heritage Softail she has them and they’re only about $12 to replace. If you ever go the 131 kit please give a video of what you think. I’m from Alabama but I now live in South California and I can’t get the 128 kit for my 107 here.

Hi Robert you need to get with Woods Jr. Question when you were on the police bike you were blipping the throttle at the turns was that you pulling in the clutch or just the throttle thing Jerry does?
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 3 жыл бұрын
Hey John what’s up. Funny you should mention Wood Jr. because we’re meeting up tomorrow to practice, along with some other riders. That’s me pulling in the clutch and hitting the throttle. I do that after every turn and I have no idea why. I guess I just like the way it sounds or something. Who knows. All I know is I can’t stop doing it now. 🤣
@MoneyMakerRealty
@MoneyMakerRealty 3 жыл бұрын
In my own opinion holding the throttle is not only safer but it should be the only way we do slow turns. By reving and playing with the clutch you can find yourself in a situation were you release the clutch with no gas and by that stall the bike and dropping it. Keeping it held you always have gas just the clutch is ar play.

Great video, just found you after watching you at the Ride like a Pro course...have to say the TV's running in the background are a little distracting especially when there's pretty girls. If you could only do ONE cone course to learn how to do tighter turns what would it be? U-turn box, off set cone weave, slow cone weave, 360's, figure 8's, or ......?? Also, hope you address your ideas for over coming having a stiff arm preventing me from making the tighter turns. Someone suggested try doing wide turns with only one hand....,

Hey what’s up. First and foremost, thank you for taking the time to visit my channel and for the feedback. It’s appreciated! Yeah if you watched my other videos, you’ll see I addressed the issue of the girls behind me in the screen. I had no idea that was going on. 😂 If I could only do one course to practice to make my turns tighter, it would be the u-turn because with that, you can start at 3 parking spaces and the just reduce it as you get better. However, I would always start with the single serpentine. It’s perfect for warming up. Be careful out there and keep practicing!

Hey ostbob ! I have the exact same issue with the stiff left arm on left u-turns. ( for whatever reason rights are easier for me ! ) I realized a while back that this was my issue for not getting tighter ! After getting by the initial start I can really lean, turn and tighten it up ! But that does not help because I screw myself in the beginning. I just heard and believe I found my answer ! Mr. Simmons ! Thank you for your service, and continued service to us riders wanting to be better ! You are my inspiration ! Some day ! Hopefully. I have watched you from the beginning, and continually come back to review videos over and over. I get my self in ruts' with no improvement, and don't watch for a while while I try to work things out, but like now, I have had no progress. I just came back to watch this video for maybe the 5th time, and I believe I got it ! I don't know how I missed the part ( maybe ignored since a little intimidating) about cutting power to rear wheel on the initial turn to help turn those bars !! I know that this is my issue ! I'm not trying to fight those bars while I'm wrestling with my 1000 lb girl !! But now that my confidence and friction zone is much better, I will go out this afternoon to incorporate this !! ostbob, I'll bet that this is your issue as well !

A buddy of mine turned me on to your page and love what you are providing. I too like to practice, especially at the beginning of the riding season to knock off any rust due to the winter months here in MI. I bought these a few months ago. I wished I knew about these before the inevitable when I was practicing...(but I digressed -smile). Hopefully these will assist your viewers. Just Paying it Forward... Thank you for what you do!
