Food in Greece was very cheap in the 1980s-1990s especially in farmers markets (called λαικη αγορα in Greek). Tomatoes, vegetables, olive oil were very affordable. After Greece joined the euro in early 2000s, everything became 3-4 times more expensive. But still then you could buy a souvlaki for 1.5 euro (now it costs 3-4 euros). Things have become especially bad after covid, as in the last two years prices have gone up more than 50% in foodstuff, olive oil etc. Olive oil you could buy 1 liter for 4 euros , now its 15 euros for 1 liter. Also gasoline is very expensive, around 2 euro per liter.

minus gasoline it's still cheaper in Greece than in Canada. A pita gyro is 10$ CND

Informative video. Thank you for showing us the various prices. The produce and the seafood are cheaper than in the States.

Not to mention that here the food is not sprayed with or smothered in fertilizers and pesticides. On a different note, a frugal tip: If you go to the markets towards the end they will give you extra items, and/or reduce prices. Sweet time spot is around 1PM. 😁

I’m half greek but live in Berlin. We usually travel once or twice a year to Greece and than always try to get our fruits and vegetables from the local farmers markets. Just wondering how did you learn greek? ☺️ Before you moved to Greece or once you moved there? Thank you for sharing your life in Greece with us ☺️

Hi, thanks for watching the video. I actually don't know much greek yet, I'm just learning on the go by learning common everyday phrases. I'm not even an A1 speaker yet lol. We moved to Greece in November 2023, so it's gonna take a bit of time to speak fluently.

@@thisismylifeingreeceHonestly I think you are doing great! ☺️ You are not afraid to speak, which is usually the most important thing when learning a new language. ☺️🙏

@@thisismylifeingreece The mere fact that you're trying will warm you up to almost everybody! We Greeks like it a lot when foreigners give it a try with our difficult language ( even when they do it unsuccessfully...😂) and we also try to help them by giving them tips about accent, vocabulary, pronunciation of words, useful phrases etc. Don't worry, before you know it, you'll be having fiery debates about politics and sports in fluent Greek, just like the rest of us Greeks!😛😂
