Why Does Checking Your Home Blood Pressure Save Lives? Dr Gill

Blood pressure is not just a static number. It varies across the day the week, the month in the year. There is a small amount of variation based on your activities which can even be seen by a raised, blood pressure, a white coat hypertension, and the doctor's surgery.
The Gold Standard for blood pressure diagnosis is Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. However, once a patient has a diagnosis of raised blood pressure, many patients will opt to do home, blood pressure monitoring, whereby they calculate the average blood pressure across the week. This has the advantage, of removing noise related to activities. Based upon this, home, blood pressure monitoring is a way of getting an accurate, true, understanding of a patient's blood pressure. Intern, this allows better monitoring of blood pressure and thus better management. By having superior blood pressure control, we have good evidence of a significant reduction in strokes, and in heart attacks.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Dr Gill came to EVERY one of our homes and checked our blood pressure..twice? What say you, Dr?

Dr . Gill , these home blood pressure monitors are lifesavers . Each menber of my family has one in there home as my mom , dad , and brother do have hypertension and are on medication to control it . There have been a couple instances where we found out they were truly sick and needed EMS system intervention . As a retired EMS professional I have found that those having a medical emergency at home with a home blood pressure device helps . That can assist on the continuum of patient assessment and establish a " flow chart " of vital signs detecting changes in the patient's condition . It also tells the ER doctor when we give our verbal report in person after radio base station contact if our patient is improving under our care or is critical needing rapid intervention .

In another video, perhaps it was the previous one you mentioned a white coat effect on blood pressure. A thought occurred to me, have there been any studies done on how talking to patients affects them? You have a very soft and calming tone when speaking with patients, but I could imagine this having the unintended opposite affect, basically "why is the doctor trying to calm me down? Is there something wrong?" Okay, as I type this out you've just mentioned that white coat effect. Just measured my blood pressure this morning after waking up, 113/73. Last week I had to take my daughter to the hospital for a quick checkup and they had a big BP machine that you insert your arm into, not sure if they're more accurate or not, but that day my BP on their machine was 102/57 I note that this time you haven't used your usual calming voice and have just spoken to him as usual and made him smile.

I find electronic cuffs don’t work well on me. They tend to read high compared to someone manually taking my blood pressure. Kind of odd.

I'm 26 now and since I was 22 I have hipertension, some doctors said it's "normal" since my mom and dad also have hypertension. I have already investigated the kidneys and other things but didn't found out the reason...

One thing ive always wondered about for wound care, if someone receives an injury to an area such as the throat, how do you stop the bleeding to treat the patient until an ambulance arrives?

Hi, as just a member of the public with very limited knowledge of medicine in general, I am curious as to why do you still use manual instruments, especially when you plan to trust patients with digital ones at home. I assume they must be better in some way, but how exactly.

The main differences are that the manual machine always works - ie no batteries to run out By checking the BP manually, it gives us extra information, such as the character (strength) of the pulse Manually allows us to check for arrhythmias at the same time Perhaps it’s a case of viewing it as the difference between buying a cake, and making a cake. Both will be good, but the British Bake Off cakes will have the edge 😊

I need this, and something to check my heart rate at home. I swear I have bradycardia cause I've checked my pulse at home and its around 50 to 55 bpm, but in the hospital or doctors office I am always anxious so it goes up to 65, and they always wave off my worries saying its healthy!

Do you miss wearing the white coat, Dr. Gill? I'm reminded of one time I actually saw a doctor wearing one. It struck me as odd -- then, I saw he was headed to the pediatric ward. I concluded he was "in costume" for the benefit of the children, who probably expected their doctor to look like a TV doctor..

You can’t miss what you’ve never had. In the UK, we haven’t worn white coats. Although there is an interesting debate, as to whether or not we should do, or whether or not, the Americans should not from an infectious disease standpoint

When I measure blood pressure manually, with a stetoskop I sometimes see the the arrow ticking much sooner, then I hear the systolic pressure...for example...If I were to only mind what I see the blood pressure would be 160/90...but I only hear the systolic sound at say 130, so it's 130/90 Can somebody please help solve the dilemma for me? 😅

Pressure against the closed artery is causing the needle to move with each pulse. But the pressure cuff is still greater than the blood pressure so keeping the artery closed. When the pressure balance changes then the pulsing continues, but now the Korotoff sounds oxcur
