How Chinese People Beat The Pizza Hut Buffet

When Pizza Hut began opening restaurants in China, they included a large salad and fruit buffet in the restaurants. But the rule was; each guest was only allowed to make one trip to the salad and fruit buffet and they were only allowed to fill one plate. This led many Chinese diners to start “salad stacking”.

Actually the one plate rule was not originally set. They underestimated just how much the Chinese people would eat and stay around to eat. The stacking occurred after the rules put in place
@ChristoffRevan
@ChristoffRevan 5 ай бұрын
Dude, they didn't underestimate...it's literally why they had the one trip / one plate rule. You must not understand life in China, but as a Chinese I'll explain...there is a huge phenomenona here of "serve yourself" type restaurants getting swarmed with people who take WAY too much individual portions and have zero respect for people that come after (as in, they don't care if there isn't enough for others); same goes for sales in stores, and I'm not talking about just Black Friday like in the West...but ALL types of sales for any item...people will swarm and try to take as many of the same item as they can, and these are normal people and not scalpers. It it theorised the main reason this happens here to the absurdity it does is due to the extreme poverty that China had in the not so distant history (extreme poverty still existing in most of the country tbh, but not at the same level)...people were hungry, they didn't own much if at all, so when the country was reconstructing and people moved to cities they ended up (for the most part) getting better lives. However, while the OUTSIDE of society seemed better off, the "poor" mentality remained to give a culture where even rich and middle class still have a "poor" mentality of being greedy and needing it all because "they don't know if they'll need those things later". It's a big problem that I'm not sure how it will be fixed, Chinese society in general doesn't really engender caring about others outside your family...with zero respect for others...so it won't go away anytime soon.

Except most vital Chinese infrastructure has been standing for over 20 years now with no signs of degradation. China has over 600 million buildings, you can’t expect zero corruption in a country as large as China, a few buildings will have low grade materials. Even the few buildings that are of low quality are usually torn down due to safety concerns. That’s not to mention the fact that the Chinese government has already cracked down on corrupt real estate developers as seen in their decisions not to bail out large real estate developers in 2020 and 2021. I’d urge you to go do further reading if you want to have a better understanding of the state of infrastructure development in China.

This is quite interesting I read somewhere that when it comes to buffets, when theyre open to people without a "price" of sorts, people tend to take as much food as they want in the moment and don't really bother taking more since if they'll need to they'll just take more later, and most of the time they won't need more later or forget or whatever else, so those buffets actually don't create many situations as such, while buffets that need to be paid for or have limits like such, "force" people to take more than they need thus creating a situation where actually more food might be taken then ever eaten thus also increasing the costs as opposed to if the buffet was free

In the 90s, Pizza Hut in the Philippines had salad bars and we had the same restrictions: single trip, single plate. And so people began layering macaroni such that one "serving" could actually feed 3 to 6 persons (3 layers or more of alternating layers of flat veggies then a layer of macaroni salad, using TID and grated cheese as "mortar", making sure each layer is as flat as possible) depending on the skill of the "salad engineer." Needless to say when more people caught on, Pizza Hut stopped their salad bar.
