76 years ago, October 14th 1947, Chuck Yeager embarked on his Bell XS-1 "Glamorous Glennis", carried by a B-29 at Muroc airforce base. While having two broken ribs, he, the USAF and NACA marked history with this milestone, crucial in developing technologies and knowledge both for planes and manned space exploration.
This video is a full recreation of the mission, as accurate as it could get, in the game Kerbal Space Program.
The whole mission was flown from the cockpit, but the video has some external views as well, some archives images and original crew conversations (from X-1A flight).
This was definitely a challenging and fun mission to do, as well as learning a lot about the outstanding research and systems from that time !

Happy new year everyone and thanks for watching ! : ) Here are some additional notes / details about this video : - I wrote a little mission report on the KSP forum, with details on the mission in KSP, the hackeries involved in the filming, as well as many historical details, fun/interesting facts, with associated pictures and diagrams : ) forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/topic/222544-how-chuck-yeager-broke-the-sound-barrier-the-complete-mission-ksp-rssro/ kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5OIob2lrtm-dHk.htmlsi=TRinaRhO5MaPd1aW - All crew conversations were AI custom generated voices, except the X-1A archive starting at 5:40. I couldn't manage to find audio archive of the XS-1 flight, if you know about any, please let me know ! So I decided to create and add those crew conversations, to make the thing more alive and immersive. Also, by curiosity : did you notice those weren't real voices ? - The chase craft is inspired by a P-80, which I believe was the plane used at the time (please confirm if you know : ) ). Turns out it in the end, it looks more like a f3D ^^ The cockpit interior of the chase plane isn't historically accurate of course. - As briefly mentioned, it's funny and interesting to know the shape of the X-1 was designed after the .50 BMG machine gun round, one of the very few object that was known to have stable and predictable trajectories at supersonic speeds at that time... ^^ - 5:15 : this is a mistake from me, I'm almost positive the purge exhaust was placed near the engine section, facing rear. - 6:14, from what I red, when released, the mothership/X-1 assembly were slightly pitched down, to avoid stalling on the Bell upon drop. As I had to record each scene multiple times, to get different angles, I resolved flying it horizontally instead, at 20 000' drop altitude. This because I needed consistency between the different shots, to have the same background/altitude/angle. - 7:57, as I mentioned, I'm using VOR navigation to return to Edwards. I don't know if Chuck did so too, does anybody know about this ? I'd guess he was flying VFR, but he also couldn't see much in this thing (actually much less than here, since this cockpit ingame can have its seat go up/down). Visibility was so poor, how could he fly and even land in that thing ^^ - Compressibility, among other technical and physical difficulties, was one of the challenge to go near/over mach 1. I would have loved to show more insights and integrate maybe more the elevator system in the cockpit , which was a brand new thing for that time (full moving), and a key part in flying this, as you can see in Yeager's mission log (description). But this would have required more modding time to integrate this properly in the cockpit, time which I had alreaddy exceeded the limit already haha - I've put ressources as well as interesting videos about the X-1 in the description. Il faut ouvrir l'internal (le cocpit) dans unity, installer parttools, et rajouter placer tous les instruments de ton choix, c'est assez long et fastidieux, mais très cool de voler sur un truc que t'as toi même fait après : ) ya quelques guides sur le forum qui expliquent comment faire le setup : - forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/topic/160487-official-parttools/ - forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/topic/207175-editingre-decorating-ivas-in-2022/ N'hésite pas si t'as des questions : )

@@Kurgutt justement, y'a un moment que je comprends pas, c'est qand ca dit " This will be your "UnTouched" GAMEDATA folder. Now create a new folder somewhere you can find it, this will be your "Modded" GAMEDATA folder, and copy the GAMEDATA folder into your new "Modded" folder. After this point only work in/on the "Modded" GAMEDATA folder." tu peux m'expliquer stp ?

@@goose9038 Il faut que tu te copies un dossier gamedata quelque part sur ton ordi (peu importe ou), uniquement avec les trucs dont t'as besoin pour modder les IVAs : le dossier SQUAD, RasterPropMonitor (JSI), et ASET, de base (+ mods contenant des IVA si besoins + props additionnels si besoin). Ce gamedata te servira à éditer tes IVAs depuis unity. ça veut dire ça en gros ^^
