Nice video. I do like mine. It's cool that Behringer made their own Karplus Strong mode for Brains but It's worth noting that they didn’t include the inharmonic string modeling mode from Plaits. It is a great mode because it offers 3 voices of polyphony in contrast to all the other modes which are monophonic. Very nice for plucked guitar/string sounds that overlap and chords (triads). Hopefully they will add it in a future update.

@@StarskyCarr What is the inharmonic strings mode called on the Brains? As far as I can tell it does not have one. I would be happy to be proven wrong though :) They did port the Modal Resonator from Plaits and called it Modal Strings on the Brains, which is why I wonder why they didn’t also port the inharmonic strings mode.

you can pretty much easily illustrate difference beteen 48 and 96 khz by playing higher tones with significant FM modulation … in that territory thank to much less aliasing and noharmonic distortion 96khz sounds MUCH better … it’s like having plaits with 2x oversampling :) This is not just about converter, but about actually internal DSP processing running at higher sample rate …

I really like this vid. It sounds good to me. I built a Veils, a Clouds, and a Braids, and a Rings. It was a bit of a faff but I couldn't afford the real deal - and if I'm honest it didn't save me much money really. I'm all for B clones and at times they seem to add extra functions that are useful. I'm keen on trying out the new Abacus clone of Maths. No way I'd fork out on the real thing - though plenty people would and have. I've had a few Bclone bits of gear and have no complaints about build quality or sound. I think Behringer are doing a great job of meeting the wants of the modular market that exists right now.

Hey SC, great review. Couldn't a Microfreak do all the above? Plus the MF has a vocoder, a modulation matrix, filters, envelopes, a playable touch-pad, etc ,....

The Microfreak is a fantastic little synth. Ive does some demos with it you might have seen. It can do a lot of this plus extras - but its not exactly the same. But essentially yeah it's the same sort of thing in a standalone instrument.

@@StarskyCarr I'm currently looking at both, and leaning towards getting into modular. That's why I asked. I want the ability to dial up more sounds, but don't exactly love the idea that when I come up with "a happy accident" on a modular, the way most do, that I won't be able to just "hit save." Thanks for the reply! Keep up the good work.

Hi thanks for the video. Just starting out in modular and have just purchased the cre8audio nifty bundle. I’m probably jumping way a head here. Could brains replace the oscillators that come with the bundle or used in conjunction with them
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can replace or be used alongside. The beauty of modular is you can have as many or as few as you like. To add another oscillator you’ll need to add a mixer to blend the two. You’ll also need a powered mult to send CV to both. The more you add the more complex it becomes … very quickly 🤦‍♂️😀

I hear on one setting of your Behringer Brains, it said, "red, orange, yellow". I was messing with my Behringer Brains that i purchased recently and on one setting, it was saying, " alpha, foxtrot, echo". I eas surprised it started saying words. Can you explain that to me?
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 7 күн бұрын
A wavetable is essentially a sample chopped into sections. The reso one is a resonant sweep for example. If you sample speach at the right speed to chop into individual samples it will play back - not clearly - but enough to recognise. Again, it has to be played at the right rate. On Brains and Plaits etc there are samples voiced saying some random words, counting etc.

Seems to me that it’s worth having both. I have the MI original but (for the price) Brains has a fair bit of added value- and the horror film tones obtained by running the two side by side seals the deal… Edit: I had the Brains, but sold it on. MI’s release of the new firmware for Plaits sealed the deal- I now have the original Plaits and a 6hp clone. Now THEY have the added value!

I got the Beehive originally as it fitted into a space.. but it was just too small to enjoy using. I quite like the larger form factor of the BRAINS, although maybe they could've had the larger knobs in a smaller space.

Oh dear. They have a 3 year warranty scheme, which I used once on my CAT as the initial run and some issues. I got a replacement ASAP. I’d try the retailer first. You should be able to get a replacement or cash back if it’s not working within 30 days (I think that’s the EU regs at least). But keep onto Behringer as they’re really keen to uphold the warranties etc.

There's tonnes of info online about the Plaits license, lots of people have used it - there are loads of clones, its in the MicroFreak, there's versions for the Prologue and Minilogue etc... its an open source code. There's no room for a full explanation here, but if you're interested dig a little deeper.. needless to say there are 2 camps of people for and against it...

The distinction is that other companies, for the most part, acknowledge the original. Behringer pretends they invented the things, takes credit for the work of others in this tight-knit community.
