The 2011 film, written by Scott Z. Burns and directed by Steven Soderbergh, depicts a worldwide outbreak of a deadly virus… sound familiar?
So I decided to compare everything thees guys got right, and everything they got wrong.
It’s quite remarkable to see a film almost a decade old, so accurately depict the reality of, possibly, the largest pandemic we have seen this century.
I’ll refer to three points specifically,
- Disease origin.
- Transmission speed.
- The impact of misinformation.
Probably the most shocking match with reality is that the fictitious MEV-1 disease depicted in the movie originates from animals. From bats to pigs, to humans.
The information we have today about COVID-19 tells us that it too has an animal origin: a bat, to a pangolin, to finally reach humans.
It is believed that the disease made its way from a bat to a pangolin in a wet market, specifically, this market in Wuhan where wildlife is traded. The conditions of the market, where animals are stacked on top of each other likely created a similar deadly coincidence.
Now, while only a small portion of the Chinese population consumes wildlife animals, the highly contagious nature of COVID-19 allowed it to quickly spread from patient zero, into the city of Wuhan.
Which brings me to the next point, transmission speed.
The reproduction number is used to estimate and represent how quickly a disease can spread. We use a similar number in the startup world to estimate when a product is ‘viral’, meaning, users that convert other users.
Like COVID-19, the fictitious virus is respiratory and can live in surfaces, fomites (18:28), for several hours or even days- making it all that easy to transmit.
In the film, patient zero contracts the virus in Hong Kong, which is technically another match, and imports it to the US. We see little of the development of the pandemic in other countries, but in the US, it spreads extremely fast.
While MEV-1 and COVID-19 share a similar R-naught factor, in the film, 125+ million people are infected about a month after patient zero.
Patient Zero for the US showed up on January 19th, about two months before I shot this video, and while testing hasn’t been the most efficient in the country, the official estimate today is about 1,500 infected.
In the film, the response from health authorities and the government was prompt, with quarantine zones established as soon as 14 days after the first death.
However, it’s the impact and dynamics of misinformation and mass hysteria, where we can find eerie similarities with our 2020 reality.
Distrust in the government and fake news. In the movie, they are represented by Jude Law’s character, a blogger that, while credited with noticing the epidemic early on, begins disseminates false theories, with no other seeming purpose than generating traffic for his website and chaos.
Alan fakes contracting the disease and fakes getting better using a natural extract called Forsythia.
Forsythia is a real herb, used to treat bronchitis and believed to help reduce inflammation, but even today, without sufficient evidence to be used in medicine. Alan’s claims release chaos as misinformed masses begin to try to get their hands on the extract.
Similarly, a group of conspiracy theorists including Alex Jones has begun promoting Micro-Particle Colloidal Silver Generator that “beats coronavirus”, claiming they have “clinical documentation” to prove it. A cease and desist was issued by the NY Attorney General, but we are yet to find out if it does anything to stop them.
We are, of course, also seeing shortages with masks (which have been advised against by the World Health Organization), hand sanitizer and… toilet paper for some reason.
When a vaccine is developed in the film (incorrectly, just 133 days after patient zero), Jude Law’s character threatens to continue misinforming his followers about the potential side effects of the vaccine. Including autism.
The film also taunts at misinformed government officials.
Which is just icing on the cake after seeing this go down in our real-world White House.
As for what comes next, the film predicts a suspension in basic services, food shortages, and mass graves. Let’s hope we don’t see any of that.
Using this opportunity to remind everyone that washing your hands with soap is the best route. Soap is the best agent to break down the protein and lipid walls of the virus.

I took an epidemics class in college, my prof was a working public health professional. We did a unit where we fact checked movies about epidemics, and our prof said Contagion was the most accurate to what would happen if we were to have a pandemic. But he insisted “that will never happen, because we are too well prepared to handle it.” I wish I could talk to him now!

In contagion the virus had a 30% mortality rate, while covid has a 0.5% mortality rate. I think that is the difference. For example in Holland there are some regions which are more religious, you'd expect them to be more anti-vaccine, but they aren't, because those areas got hit the hardest with covid. People really change their behavior based on how severe the situation is. In regions where covid had less impact there is less willingness to vaccinate. Btw if 30% of everybody is going to die, government officials would want to stop the virus out of fear for their own life. And they'll want to stop the virus out of fear for their own career, since if they don't seem to do enough against it, at least they'll not get elected again.

Then December of 19, Chinese people were in hospitals angry because family members were dying and hospitals couldn’t give answers. I told my coworkers about a new virus and they thought I was crazy. I brought mask and everything. I saw the pandemic happening and prepared my family for it. I’m saying all of that to say; do not trust the media. Do what is best for you. The media legit gave wrong information in the beginning. I even had a friend in Japan right before the pandemic and when he came to the United States he was shocked no one was wearing a mask.

How’s it a coincidence? Corona viruses have existed since the dawn of man. We deal with them every year; I.e the flu. COVID-19 is called covid 19 as this strain began going widespread in 2019. Almost every year we have movies come out about these pandemics. Why are they accurate? Because the WHO, CDC, and other health officials are constantly planning for, studying, and researching how viruses can potentially become serious pandemics…
@walterbar3118

I think the most important difference between the movie and reality is the incubation period. In the movie the incubation period is rather shot, so the virus seems unstopable. In reality the oposite is the case. Covid-19 has a rather long incubation period, so an infected - not knowing he is a spreader - can spread the disease. Maybe if the incubation period would have been shorter, patients showing sympthos earlier, it would have been easier to contain the infected. Provided the will, to shut down borders and internationl traffic to an absolute minimum, of course.
@mulattoman
@mulattoman 2 жыл бұрын
The virus was also killing 1/4 to 1/5 people REGARDLESS OF AGE. That's a 20-25% kill rate, which is insane, and as a result society actually sort of collapsed in the movie because of how many people ended up dying after about a year (I think its 200-400 million). If COVID had been killing that many people regardless of age/health/whatever the world would be a lot different than it is today, also there would be no anti vaxxers cause they would either be completely wiped out, or would at least have all suffered getting sick.

The fact that a movie dating back in 2011 managed to capture more than I would say is 80% of what has happened with the Covid Pandemic, goes to show we human are so predictable. We fall into the same mistakes despite us having science and math telling us not to fall into those mistakes. Despite all that, we still conclude that we are the rational beings of the Universe. It's quite comical when you think about it.

@@ghendric You have it the wrong way around. This movie used previous events as a script. Just put Spanish flu and people behavior's from other pandemics/ disasters in current day and you have this movie. This movie takes the science and the past seriously. A realistic, well researched movie about a pandemic will resemble a real pandemic in many ways. Covid is way less dangerous than the virus in this movie btw. Current events are way better explained by accidentally leaked virus or virus from animal market, combined with normal human behavior and some incompetence. That's something scientists have been warning about for years, because pandemics happen sometimes and the danger is underestimated. Secret powerful psycho's are not needed at all.

I'd say they also missed on that virus would escape lab in China. I mean US paying big dollars towards corona virus research in a laboratory inside communist China. What could go wrong? We had viruses escape labs in UK, in US - luckily all situations got contained - and we enforced very strict regulations because of these few incidents. Meanwhile in Wuhan lab they were literally pouring out viruses down the kitchen sink once they done examining them. But I guess in 2010 it would been out-of-fashion to say anything bad towards communists. Still the biggest miss IMHO is that of US president suggesting injecting disinfectant to treat virus. Two big differences; For one, thankfully, it ended up that fomite transmission of covid was pretty rare. I think there's only been a small handful of confirmed fomite transmitted cases, the virus just isn't viable for more than a few minutes on any surface, even if the viral particles are there . For another, the virus in contagion is far more deadly, although that makes covid even more insidious because it becomes easy to justify to oneself that you won't get it

It is mathematically IMPOSSIBLE to have a simulation of 3 variables, virus, pandemic, global financial collapse on 18 October 2019, Event 201 and then in less than 30 days in mid November 2019 ALL of those EXACT variables are met and result in reality. The math does not lie, nor is the math incorrect. It is mathematically impossible. IMPOSSIBLE.

As he said in the video, the scientific/medical name for it is SARS-COV-2. All coronaviruses (title for the respiratory virus group, not an alternative name for specifically Covid-19 (like many news outlets, medical folk, etc are using it when they just call it 'coronavirus')) are similar from the common cold and the flu to SARS, MERS, and Covid-19, functioning the same way just varying in severity and how easily transmittable they are. Generally the easier they spread they less severe they are to contract, but Covid-19 sits somewhere in the middle where it's multiple times as deadly as the flu but also spreads quite easily too. If a coronavirus is severe enough to kill everyone who contracts it quite quickly, then it can't spread very far as the person can't come into contact with many other people between contracting it and isolation through fatigue prior to death. Likewise if you had a cold, a much less severe coronavirus, it's not likely to fatigue you to the point you can't still go to work, shops, etc, at least not for a while, so you can come into contact with many other people and surfaces and spread it very easily and it can go through a population very quickly.

@@skop3569 it's not ending in first world countries either. Most people globally are wilfully ignorant, deluded, or seem fed up with doing the right thing due to their immaturity and lack of communal responsibility. This may be the one to end humanity, and it will all be down to our collective hedonism and delusion (i.e. waging wars during a pandemic? Stupid politics around producing and distributing vaccines both worldwide and domestically? Get vaxxed once, but then go to bars, huge markets and clubs unmasked because you're "protected"? willing the old and the sick to die off just so you can enjoy meeting your friends again and because "they would have died anyway"?) and extreme selfishness. This is a worldwide problem and it won't go away as long as we don't collectively change our thoughts on what is important: humanity or hedonism. A view from the "third world".

@@sitandchill2897 i guess you are fed up with the people's bullshit and you are angry to lots of people and i totally understand you and agree with you. But it is worth mentioning that mental health and the will for the "normal" is needed too. And we need to loosen our limitations for that. I definitely do not support people who do not wear masks in a situation where they can! I agree. But if you dont have an open-air option, eat in that cafe with your friends (naturally, without a mask). Try to find a uncrowded cafe, try to find an open-air option, put your mask while you dont eat like waiting for your order BUT dont miss that social eating with your friends because you couldnt find such a place. People need to do the best they can for themselves, society, elderly and sick while also considering effects of constantly thinking about the limitations and sacrificing the possibility of lots of interaction, experiences and memories for a long and still indefinite period of time. This is not selfishness or irresponsibility, this is not just enjoying a club, this a serious need and it is as important as physiological health. So try to empatize with those you see who may be listening music first time from not a headphone or may be having their only the second meal outside with a friend in this 1.5 year. Everyone draws this "precaution/mental need" line at a different point because everyone has different lifes that bring different needs.

I remember sitting in the movie theater(back when we used to do that) on release weekend and everyone left the theater quietly because the movie was just "creepy"- like it could never happen, as if it were an insane dramatization and hyperbole of H1N1. Fast forward 10 years and now I feel like Contagion should be a legal requirement to have in all educational curriculums. This video was made last year just as the pandemic started in the US in full force; @Caya says he hopes we don't see mass graves or food shortages, but we did and we are. This movie is so accurate it even depicted the social media influencer misinformation craze that's still happening literally today. If only we took Hollywood more seriously just this once.

@@abyssstrider2547 It's not suspicious. SARS-COV-1 happened in early 2000s and it came from bats. The fact that bats carry by far bigger numbers of potentially dangerous corona viruses compared to all other animals is well known. Bat corona viruses where one of the most researched viruses in 2010s and it's very likely it has escaped research labs in Wuhan. I'm sad that this vid mentions Pangolin when there is very little evidence to support it and whole wet market idea was literally dropped by Chinese communist party with literally 0 evidence to support it. The species of bat (or any bat for that matter) was not for sale at the Wetmarket. The species of bat itself was not local to the area, even being nearly a thousand miles away. There were however two virulogical research centres in Wuhan, which recieved US government financing through a third party for the purpose of virus function gain. The said bat species, suspected to be the origin species was found at the lab, though at this time, the origin species has still not been found, breaking the previous record of SarS's 8 months to find origin species. Gain of function research is strictly porhibited in the US during which time funding was being sent to these labs. For internal matters, it doesn't matter much if this was the origin of the current Covid-19 epidemic. What does matter however was Fauci's illegal conduct/ gross negligence of funding... though the latter can be dismissed thanks to Fauci's leaked personal emails, in which a mail dated to 2019/2020 he had asked "Was this us?" + the summary reports regularly recieved from the institute.
