Today, I take a look at the science behind coral reef restoration (and nerd out hard while doing it), how it works in real life, and how it works in Coral Island. Spoiler: it's pretty dang on point.

Quick little nugget of info- Another great way to help out coral reefs is through our sunscreen!! Believe it or not, MOST sunscreen has specific chemicals that will wash out into oceans and hurt the coral reefs further. Keep an eye out for the words "reef safe" on your sunscreen when putting it on :)

That's really cool! I haven't been swimming at a beach in ages, so most times when I put on sunscreen, I'm going to a pool. That's not something I'd even really thought of, but I'll definitely be conscious of that going forward!

@@DoctorDDub LOL! I live in Texas and experienced the "week from hell" as my friends put it. I'm glad the weather is back to normal. I know my emergency box of stuff will change though. I had prepared for a quarantine where I had electricity and water. I was NOT prepared to be without electricity and water and nearly ran out of food and at one point was using snow to flush my toilet. x_x;

Yeah, things got rough for quite a few people. My boss filled her bathtub to use to flush the toilet. Melting snow works too though! It's all about being resourceful.

Me too! I've never really seen it too heavily focused on (except maybe in Eco), and after doing this video, I feel like that theme runs even deeper.

I became so immersed by the coral portion I forgot I was watching a video about a game. But in the best way possible. Thank you for the educating segment along with the game intro. I’m very interested in biology so it was a nice treat.

i hope they do something along the lines of “perks for collecting/recycling trash” outside of the base having a cleaner reef; something like a “special diving suit made from those recycled plastics” or other ways of repurposing the trash could be really cool :0

If you pay close attention to the scene near the end of the trailer, those recycled plastics are used to upgrade and build things around town!

Wonderful! I'll be following you closely for more info on this game. Trailer breakdowns are nice but they are a dime a dozen. Your video approached this game from a different angle and it also helped me to understand some of the passion driving the game devs. Thank you for this truly informative video!

Indonesia has a problem of burning rainforests to free up more land for farming. I know this because every single time they pull that sh*t, we neighbouring Malaysians will get a pleasant afternoon haze. I am very curious if this hazing issue will be touched on and explored in this game, considering how the MC is in the farming business.

Farming into burning the forrest is for palm oil or for oil fry industry. Its not civilian caused But all because company owner and work of some corrupt government

some of it is due to the shitty and dirty way they produce palm oil, slash & burn forested areas and replace it all with palm oil plantations, it ruins a whole ecosystem and also pollute the air when they burn the trees. There are cries from many environmental NGOs to stop the practice, i hope they do stop it in the future and move towards a more sustainable way

And I think that's their goal as well - you care about the coral in game, you start to realize and care about it irl. I try to get into the details with these types of videos. I feel like that's how I stand out compared to the "look at this game omg so cute!" type videos. I can get hyped, but I want to offer something...more.

Its so exciting to see environmental awareness in video games! Especially when it looks fun & not super in your face. I recently watched that Netflix documentary "Seaspiracy" and it honestly sickened me, I haven't touched fish since lol

This video educated me on the well-being of Coral reefs and it actually made me consider becoming a Marine-biologist-- UNTIL I SAW THE REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDYING IN THAT FIELD, SO I JUST RAN AWAY JSDSHKJSD But anyway, this video is amazing, it really makes the game look and feel more authentic and closer to the real world. I hope this game will encourage more individuals to try and become marine-biologists. Awesome video!

I'm sure it will! They're still in the process of getting approval from Nintendo, but they've developed it with the Switch in mind so the port shouldn't come with many, if any, compromises, aside from a lack of mods most likely.

Its really cool that this game is mixing science into a fantasy scenario, we have a lab doing research that is based on real scientific stuff, but also have merpeople and an entity, very fun and appealing, and original! I subbed! Wanted to get updates about this game and so far you're the best channel for it in youtube that I found. I sadly missed the campaign but I already confirmed in the server that I can preorder once the store goes live and get the alpha farmer pack so i can get it early by June.

Thank you for this, and that info actually makes me even more interested in the game! It's fascinating to see actual real life solutions being adapted into gameplay, it's quite rare for something as specific as coral bleaching to be explored in depth in any game or creative fiction in general! It's also really cool to see southeast asia represented, I'm Malaysian so the food and environment shown in Coral island have similarities to my hometown :D

@@DoctorDDub Excellent job explaining just enough about the myriad of ways scientists are saving coral reefs to appreciate how the game appears to be set up btw. One of the first (and only) videogames my parents let me have as a child was zoo tycoon, which has encyclopedia entries on all of the animals, so I'm familiar with games that teach you something! I like how the mechanics are going to reward you for investing in this scientific research through literal upgrades via kelp samples, etc.

I've yet to decide on that. I'll definitely be making videos, but whether it's worthy of a playthrough or not, I'm not sure. It could be very buggy still and I don't want to misrepresent the game.

Another fact you forgot to mention is how much oxygen coral reefs produce. Australia’s great barrier reef produces more oxygen then the Amazon rainforest. Another killer of coral reefs (at least in the Great Barrier Reef) is invasive species, specifically, a certain starfish. It was introduced by the Japanese around world war 2 (memories a bit foggy) through their war and fishing ships. The rate at which the starfish eat the coral is extremely terrifying and they multiply extremely fast.

I'm not sure! Then again, I don't even know any Indonesian youtubers, nor do I know if I would understand them depending on what language their videos are in.

Too bad you can only pay with Creditcard for this game

Yeah, they said they were going to reach out and see why only credit card was being allowed. The payment platform, Stripe, allows more than just cc, like PayPal. I'll see if I can get more info.
