Leitrim is the least populated and least densely-populated county of Ireland. It is bisected by the River Shannon and Lough Allen which are crossed by no bridges fully in Leitrim.
To go from one half of the county to the other, you have to pass through Cavan or Roscommon. Another smaller pene-exclave is found at the Donegal border while divided villages and panhandles are found elsewhere.

Ampara District in Sri Lanka is just like this, the north-western part (Dehiyattakandiya) is seperated from the rest by the Maduru Oya Reservoir

The District of Ballintrillick is in County Sligo However 3 townlands of it are in county Leitrim, Muckrim Aghamore and Cloonty.

"Leitrim not having any traffic lights until 2016" I can confirm is comeplete bullshit, there's multiple sets in manorhamilton and Carrick on Shannon, speaking from previous experience driving through these towns, I would assume there are other sets in the likes of drumshanbo etc

I worked there in 1979 for three months building a Sports facility. A great little place Bielefeld with wonderful people who took us in when things went tits up with the Dutch Agent. I was 20 yrs old and working as a bricklayer on price work. Maybe it's time Mr.@Geographyworld that you actually went out and travelled around a bit and see what most of us have done so then you could react better when you make comments...

Great question! I'd say the northern half since the county town of Carrick-on-Shannon is in the south.

the boundaries of leitrim arent natural and its boundaries were formed later, to fit around other previous created counties. also go back far enough and the older traditional boundaries of Connaught were via the Shannon, Inny & Erne rivers. - Modern Clare was in Connaught. - Whats now Longford west of the Inny was in Connaught - Whats now Cavan west of the Erne was in Connaught - Whats now Fermanagh south & west of the erne was in Connaught. - the small piece of Donegal south of the erne (Bundoran) was in Connaught.

Because the area is the Congo rainforest and river basin. France and Belgium colinised the rep of Congo and the DRC respectively. When they got independence from their respective colobisers, theh became different states, just like any other colonies
