This video will be about making a fitting corset, finding out how we can tweak the silhouette even further and finally creating a dress that flows smoothly over it, hiding all the construction.

I'm a beginning sewist with ambitions to make my wedding dress, but wanting to make something that looks tailored, possibly even couture. I have a similar "short waist," and I've been contemplating for many months on how to achieve the shape I want. It just seems like almost no matter what sewing challenge I'm pondering, sooner or later you share a video that demonstrates so beautifully and clearly ways I can accomplish what I'd like to achieve. You have no idea what a blessing your channel has been to me. I am very excited about the silk dupioni swatches that will serve as the base layer. I'm torn between the gold/Bordeaux or the gold/mint green. The latter is more fun, and the former is more elegant. You are an inspiration to this mid-30s amateur sewist. Thank you for everything!

I'd originally intended to make my own wedding dress but by chance I found The Dress in a discount bin at a bridal show... but the shape of it actually made me look like I had hips (which I don't have much of, on top of having all of an inch between top of hip and bottom rib), because the dress had a V-waist and also a really fluffy gauzy skirt part that floofed out just perfectly over the hoop skirt my friend found me at the thrift store. Hope that helps, and congrats on your wedding! Biggest advce to a beginning sewist is to make a mockup, and if it's not right, make another, commercial patterns just aren't made for us short-waisted folks.

I'm also a beginner seamstress! I got engaged 2 years ago (getting married in a month!!) and chose to make my own dress for the same reasons as you. I had a few appointments at bridal stores, but each time I tried to explain what I wanted, I felt like they did not understand what I meant with 'structured silhouette', even when I showed them photos. They kept showing me dresses with like two boning channels that did nothing to alter my shape, and called it a 'corset'... Even though I'm a beginner, I've found it a really rewarding challenge to learn corsetry, and quite honestly, with all the resources out there on KZfaq it hasn't been that difficult! I'm wishing you all the luck on your wedding dress making journey

Hi 🙋🏾‍♀Random Gemini on the internet, here to advocate for both fun AND elegance, at the same time! But seriously. Mint and gold together can be SO elegant, if you style it right 😘 Since you're going through all the effort to make your own dress, I want it to be EVERYTHING you want it to be. Perhaps find different accessories for the reception and ceremony. Like, a funky fascinator for one and a long, crowned, jeweled veil for the other! If you want two sets of everything (gloves, jewelry, etc.), put the bridal accessories you want (or a fundraiser for them) on your shower registry or something; I think the community will want to support this plan 🙌🏾💕

Such beautiful work, and I think it's really important that people know about all these tricks and secrets in couture dress making. It's so easy to look at red carpets and think, "I'm never going to look like that", but the reality is, they don't look like that either! With modern fashion I think we've really forgotten that clothing can do more than cover the body, it can completely recreate it. For centuries, women achieved the fashionable silhouette through their clothing and it wasn't so important what their actual bodies looked like. It's only fairly recently that people have been told the only way to look "right" is by doing this diet or that exercise. Hopefully next time someone sees a celebrity with a flawless waist and perfect hourglass hips, they can think, "wow what a wonderful, clever dress" and not "wow my body could never be that perfect".

Unfortunately...99% of those Red Carpet looks can ONLY be worn for the person who is wearing it...and therein lies the problem. In the 'old' days...when women (and men) wore specific foundation garments...'fashion' could be worn by everyone. A poor person may not have been able to purchase a silk or brocade that a wealthier person could, but they could still make the SAME garment in a less expensive fabric.

How about accept you don’t have hourglass body and you shouldn’t care if you already have a healthy body? Hourglass body exist and continue to exist. Deny this will creat more insecure people when they will see a real hourglass body… Actually, some people think have a less than 23inch waist is impossible. And when they see that it exist they are more uselessly insecure. Just work on yourself. Try to have a real self esteem.

Ms. Lepold, your knowledge and craftsmanship are beyond outstanding! Artists of your caliber usually don't share in depth details of their work even when overviewing. I very much appreciate your confidence in your abilities and your willingness to share information with those of us who haven't received formal dressmaking or tailoring training. Your soothing voice is assuring. I'm hoping to attempt a portion of your technique at some point in the future. I'm hoping polyester organza will work as a base. Please update us additional details about this project if you have the time in the future. I'm sure younger views interested in design will be as grateful as I am.👏👏👏♥♥♥🥰

A lot of people judge the past based on what is left over, not understanding how the past survives. Like thinking...assuming really...that corsets were constricting devices, instead of being more along the lines of weight distribution. Understandable to a certain degree because of extent garments are often of smaller sizes...sizes that worn for a short time by teenagers. And we forget how many layers along with how many yards were in a skirt, were worn which increased the hip size when in turn made the waist seem even smaller.

Oh this was such a cool video! I admit it rarely think about the added structure to the garments we see in handmade pieces unless they are made to standout. As always not only is the finished dress a clear labor of love but so is the video itself in its presentation and composition. An absolute treat to view on a stormy afternoon.

The dress is stunning! I love to watch you create your amazing designs. I like that you showed how you can change the shapes of the under clothing ( and outer ) to make a dress look stunning, and very flattering, even if you don't have the exact proportions on your own. I thought the corset was amazing on it's own. It felt to me, like when you see the architectural drawings and plans to an amazing house or castle! I thought laying out what you were using for this project was a very nice touch in the beginning of video. Just incredible as always!! Wishing you joy and peace and a beautiful Spring , Audri

I got into sewing because I was disappointed with the fit and quality of the dresses in the store. Unlucky for me I have a taste for well made garments but not the budget. However I’m willing to put in the ours! I just finished my first ever dress. I heavily adjusted the bodice for perfect fit and easily spent 30 hours on making the dress. It was eye opening for me to see what was possible with a little work and care. I want to learn the art of having my clothes fit to perfection but stay discreet. Thank you for your video ❤

Thank you so much for pointing out that people with not much room between hips and ribs often can't get much waist reduction even with a corset, and ALSO for sharing that you're not comfortable with anything constrictive around the waist, I'm in the same boat on both counts, with a short waist and ribs that get really irritated if anything's the least bit tight around the bottom of my ribcage.
