Joseph Gordon-Levitt has gotten more than his fair share of attention from his acting career. But as social media exploded over the past decade, he got addicted like the rest of us -- trying to gain followers and likes only to be left feeling inadequate and less creative. In a refreshingly honest talk, he explores how the attention-driven model of big tech companies impacts our creativity -- and shares a more powerful feeling than getting attention: paying attention.

@@gambasfile7157 a goal could be a person? if you're talking about getting in a relationship then it can't be because if they're not interested from the first glance then its over my friend. women lie when they say looks don't matter, they're the same as men. looks are very important and other factors play a part also such as personality and character but they come secondary when looks are not there. a goal is something which is entirely 100% by your own effort and other people have choices to be with you in whether relationships, friendships or business.

I feel like Joseph is intuitively tapping into something much deeper regarding how powerful of a tool attention can be. If we take Jungian psychology and shadow work, which is the basis of the most successful models of therapy imo, it's essentially controlling what we pay conscious attention to, and bringing forth into consciousness that which we do NOT want to pay attention to (aka our shadows, the parts of us we resist so much we don't even identify with) in order to integrate them, and Joseph bearing his shadows and wholeheartedly owning them so openly to a very large group of people is a very powerful thing. Which is why group therapy or partner programs like AA (or church, really) work so well. When a large group all pay focused attention to the same thing and keep each other in check, deep synergy and transformation can happen that are greater than the sum of their parts, but both externally and internally in every individual. So I hope no one takes this to mean attention is a bad, evil thing that we should never desire. it's just a powerful tool that you can remind yourself you always have the choice to direct.

I agree with you about the transformational power of a community that focuses shared attention on a particular aspect of life (like AA, Church, and I would add human rights groups, etc). And to your point about paying attention to the thing we *Don't want to pay attention to, I have found community essential to the process of developing self-compassion as a therapeutic tool. I can't imagine how one can exercise compassion if they don't receive it or watch someone else recieve it. Which again requires paying attention just as much as accepting attention.

I think most artists would love to give their undivided attention to their work, but the "getting" of attention so often determines who has enough confidence or money or resources to live within their creative flow to begin with. Attention means more than just the great feeling of being praised -- it is a gateway to survival, wealth, and power. It's no wonder that we descend into competitive practices within our creative industries, because we still have the fear of going hungry beneath it all.

I gave up social media in 2020 because I'd struggled for years with this draw for attention because in my real life I don't crave attention, but on social media I felt all the feelings of failure when I wasn't getting any. After the initial struggle of quitting, I felt freer than I thought I would and I've never missed it.

@ZeroGarz
@ZeroGarz 4 жыл бұрын
Well, it is unfortunate that you have not been able to reach a strong state of flow while simultaneously caring about the world around you. To do so, one must simply be capable of shedding all outside concerns during (emphasis on during) the action/whatever it is that one is paying their attention to. All outside concerns are dropped to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of the human doing the task. (Shed all your concerns for a limited time, then come back to reality and care for your loved ones when the action/task you were using flow for is finished) P.S. When humans are legitimately in a state of "not caring" as in the circuitry in their brain that regulates emotion is removed or destroyed leaving one incapable to attach feelings to thought or thought to feeling, there is not a single sense or reason to perform any actions such as paying attention for them for they truly are incapable of caring for anything. Flow is when one is able to use the machinations of the human brain to focus and hone in on a particular target without letting the focus falter from distractions. Successfully reaching flow is when human and task alike are synergetically in motion, in other words, their focus is so disciplined during the flow-state that distractions are unable to hinder the action the human is doing.

Pre-phone addiction I remember being able to read, and write, for hours. Flash forward to the present and I am struggling to even make it through a magazine without checking my phone, or heck even just watching a 20-minute TV episode that is designed to grab my attention! A movie/TV actor does a 10-30 second cut, in front of crew he knows, repetitively over and over until they're satisfied. It'd be easy to do that and still be uncomfortable public speaking. Theater actors, however, wouldn't have this excuse.

In fact, in this whole world we need a collaboration to make our dreams come true, we need a company. So when facing a shortage, we might need to ask other's help to complete it (learnt by them or etc) We are all have the strenghts and weaknesses, why don't we strengthen each other to reach our goals by the collaboration? It all depends on your motivation. If my job is to bring awareness to a worthy cause, then seeking and attracting attention could be a selfless and meaningful act. It could be more of an act of giving than simply paying attention. It all depends on whether I'm craving attention for the benefit of myself or for the benefit of others. Paying attention to something that brings no one else any value could actually be more of a selfish act. Again... it's the person's motivation that matters. Is it selfless or selfish?

I have grown more and more respect for Joseph Gordon-Levitt over the years for all of his talents to now discover how smart he is too! I am a Montessori Guide and we see so many children in the class who are seeking attention constantly and our work is to get their focus turned towards something they really love, to concentrate, be focused, learn and eventually be creative with it. In the class, we also encourage children to help each other and “collaborate” and in the end, each child progresses so much more, they feel so much happier! This sort of habits should be taught as early as possible in the life of a Human Being... being connected with others, with the here and now, exploring our creative energies! Very inspiring to hear about Joseph’s own experience

Stumbled on this today and I related to it a lot. I've been trying to process and understand my thoughts on attention and its negative impacts on my happiness a lot over the last year and this really sums it up perfectly. Thank you for giving my incomplete thoughts some structure, understanding and resolution. I appreciate you and I appreciate this a lot

This video should be watched by every creative tbh. My biggest issue personally is being scared my creative work wont be good enough to others, so I don't even try sometimes. I always feel better and do better when I'm doing what I love, not what other's love.

@JosephGordon-Levitt listening to this I feel was so healing because it was honest, non-condemning and so it definitely was encouraging and humbling hearing this topic spoken of in that their was no shame but a level of understanding that needed to be considered applying also how access to the things actually cause for one to become and attention seeker; this is in regard to the influence of what we are exposed once we are linked into the apps that are designed to challenge our selfworth and seek validation. In unhealthy ways. This was such a special Ted talk experience. God bless all and God help us to do the work to heal from all that affects the inward parts of who we are that needs changing, I pray we individually would self-reflect and become the best version of ourselves. All the best! This was an awesome topic to speak on and Joseph Levitt did it justice.

First time ever watching this and for so long needed it. This came into my mind: Pay attention, don't try to get it, because If you cannot give yourself attention and you try to get it from others, it will never be enough. But if you pay attention of what you do and how you do it and keep a track on it, you will notice if you are doing something or not, if you are advancing or not for yourself. And It's ok to stay put sometimes, is ok to have better days than others because that's life, be kind to you and others, don't wait for someone to come and make you happy.

I've always liked and appreciated Joseph as a actor. After listening to his Ted Talk, seeing how humble and hearing how well spoken he was, my appreciation has deepened even more. He discussed some important topics that are relevant, posed relatable questions, shared his ideas, and shared his unique perspective on potential ways be more creative. Which ultimately will lead you to your own success and happiness. Now that was a excellent Ted Talk. Thank you.
