I’d have to agree with you. Most of the time, I don’t really like when certain concepts deviate from the source material… I mean just look at those crappy Hollywood adaptations like King of Fighters, Dragonball Evolution, but there’s some movies I like that has some creative liberties applied. I guess what I’m trying to get at is I highly dislike media where writers would apply so much of their “creative” liberties (adding stuff that makes no sense or destroys the character’s traits) it deviates so much from the source…

@@danzansandeev6033 Both the game and edgerunners are to actual cyberpunk lore, like MCU is to marvel comics. The entire way the sandevistan works is not lore accurate at all. In the lore, it just gives you faster reflexes, while the body moves as fast as it could move before the implant was installed. And the use of this thing also has pretty shitty consequences, which is why this technology is used only when strictly necessary. And it makes sense, considering that the thing is installed only above the spine, so it works only on the nervous system. And the whole cyberpsychosis plot is not lore accurate as well. Having lots of implants doesn't transform you into a cyberpsycho. Otherwise people like Adam Smasher wouldn't exist. What can transform you into a cyberpshycho is the emotional instability or untested/badly installed implants. In the game, in general, the whole thing with Johnny attacking the Arasaka tower, is wrong in many details. That attack in the lore, was done on the Militech's order. The attack was lead by Morgan Blackhand, who basically was an arch nemesis for Adam Smasher. Johnny was only a sidekick here. And he died right on the building, being killed by Adam. Adam tried to challenge Morgan to a fight, but the building exploded, and it wasn't a nuke, just a very strong bomb, and Morgan and the others got away. So basically, what we have in the lore and what we got in both the game and the anime, is quite different. The basic elements for the worldbuilding might be the same, but the history of these worlds and the way things work, are pretty different.

I say the reason is that both worked well is because of both being animated. So the studios behind said project has freedom/liberties to an extent to make things their way to fit the style. Live-action is still bound to more normal things of course. But I'm not saying live-action is bad(there's a few examples) but some do work well, while some don't

I'd also add that just being animated doesn't mean it would work better either. Some adaptations which are also animated still don't work (eg Warcraft). The reason I have for this is that both productions (Studio Trigger and Fortiche) aren't Hollywoodian. Hollywood productions all fell off HARD in the last decade, formulaic and average, and there is no incentive because people will watch them anyway. Internationally, however, it is all about making something of quality to fight quantity and consumer favoritism. Hell, even the "Academy" (which is the award giver) doesn't like watching anything outside of Hollywood, so Parasyte (a Korean film) being nominated and WINNING was a huge surprise! And anime got no wins in over a decade, last time being a Ghibli production because, you guess it, they had contacts with Hollywoodian producers and directors.
@soksocks
@soksocks Жыл бұрын
@@NothingXemnas it really depends on what animation they're using too. If it's 3D, it's bound to be shotty sometimes but can be pulled off. 2D is much easier to work with imo, depending on how they do it. Either digitally or hand drawn(I think there's more but I can't remember currently). Or even both, the one case I can only remember 2D and 3D was implemented was for Gundam Unicorn. The thing with Arcane and Edgerunners aren't catering to Hollywood standards, it's already established studios from a different market that's able to pull of things like this. Riot(not sure if there's any other supporting animation studios)do very well in cinematics in general. Looking at there previous works way before Arcane. Edgerunners is both CDPR(maybe even Pondsmith) and Trigger, so both aren't really in the realm of Hollywood. More so a medium that can be touched to expand on said IP, which is anime
@uriel005
@uriel005 Жыл бұрын
The medium matters less than the stories being told. Sure certain mediums lend themselves better or worse for how many resources you need to invest or just aesthetically matchup well but if the fundamental understanding and writing of the material is bad nothing is really going to fix that. I mean case and point one of the classic cyberpunk mediums that got people into cyberpunk was Bladerunner. I mean hell Misty in game is basically a homage to one of the characters and they even have several easter eggs in cyberpunk 2077 dedicated to it. (Batty Hotel... Batty is the name of one of the characters and they even have his character dead on a roof with one of his iconic lines put up next to him so.... yeah... not exactly subtle) I mean I could see edgerunners live action if you really wanted to do it. I mean Battle Angel Alita for the cybernetics looks mixed with some matrix slowmo for the Sandevistan and despite how bad it was some of the visuals from the Ghost in the Shell film adaptation tells me this can be done live action.

in my opinion, the main reason these adaptations works isn't because its an original story from the game or because its a prequel. Just look at Castlevania which is not a prequel but an adaptation of the game Castlevania III (loosely). I think its because the people behind them are either the creators of the games themselves or really passionate fans of the game (and not influenced by money-hungry Hollywood Executives that doesn't know the source material). Cyberpunk Edgerunners was created by CD Projekt red, same as *their* game CP 2077. Arcane was developed by Riot who made LoL. This is why I have faith that the Last of Us serie will succeed despite being a direct adaptation of the game's story. Cause if its not the original creators or a passionate fan behind the serie/movie we'll most likely get movies and series like: Halo, Assassins Creed, Tomb Raider, Uncharted etc.
@vice2versa
@vice2versa Жыл бұрын
Agreed!!! I think thats one of the main reasons. The creators get to make something similar to their original vision and also have a greater care for how well it is. The expanse had the 2 original authors of the books involved in the writing process of the show and they said a lot of scenes in the show was exactly how they pictured it in their heads. Also another reason I feel this guy doesn't get it exactly is the fact that most hollywood adaptations try to change the story for whatever reason alienating fans who want to see the original works come to life.

@@SaberRexZealot Troy Baker (the voice of Joel) actually asked the TLoU creator Neil why he wanted to make the game into a serie since the games story is already perfect. Neil replied something like: "That's exactly why I want to make it into a serie, because it's a great story. You knows it, I knows it, the people who has played the game knows it. But there's still so many people who will never pick up a controller in their life and experience it." And I agree, by making it into a series I can actually sit down with my parents and older sisters (Who has no interest in games) and show them there's more to a game than just shooting and running. Personally, i dont read at all so i wouldve missed the greatness of Game of thrones and Harry Potter if they werent addapeted into series/movies even tho, the source material is always supirior to the adaption, but thats what makes you want to dive into the original afterwards. Like, imagine when the Harry Potter books got so much popularity in the 90's and they decides to make a Young Dumbledore movie saga instead of adapting the books. Because they don't want a retelling of the books and want an original story for the book fans only. So basically, im still excited for the show but I'm waaay more excited for the non-fans of the game to discover the story. (If it's good)

Just wanna say that Edgerunners was made by Studio Trigger (together with CDPR of course), but I agree with everything you said! Arcane, Edgerunners and Castlevania have a soul, I can tell the people who worked on them cared for what they were doing and know the games. I'm just in awe how Trigger adapted dozens of in-game locations that you can actually visit in the game, even the characters homes, they use songs you can listen in game from the radio and match them with beautiful moments, they even poke fun at some of the game's bugs at launch, they knocked it out of the park. 8:44 I don't think a sequel to CP2077 in the form of an anime would be that much of an issue. Trigger and CDPR worked fairly closely together on Edgerunners to make sure it fit together. Studio Trigger got the outline for the story of Edgerunners from the writing team of CDPR, this was confirmed by the showrunner of Edgerunners working at CDPR in an interview. Seeing how successful Edgerunners was, I can imagine CDPR considering commissioning another anime in the CP2077 universe, something like a prequel to CP2077 Orion or an anime to bridge CP2077 and Orion. The main reason I think both of these shows were so good is simple: they had heart! You can feel emotion and passion emanating from the projects, which is different from alot of other adaptations that feel like cheap cashgrabs that just used the name of some famous game to gain some attention. The people who worked on "Arcane" and "Edgerunners" seem to be passionate about doing something amazing, so it transmits that emotion to the public eye. I don't think being a prequel helps or breaks the show itself, but the intent does.

5:45 the thing with the flare and the smoke tattoos is IMO the best possible way to give explanation for small details. Often it feels forced into a story but not here. Nobody would've cared if there was no explanation for it, but if you connect the dots, you'll see it. Still the creators never EVER tell you this, this is something you work out for yourself. That's why this is so much better than Han Solo being named Solo because he was travelling alone and a random guard just giving him the last name Solo. Also you could make the same connection for Jinx' weapons as pow-pow is what she later goes on to call her minigun and her launcher is a shark because her father figure liked sea creatures. Again, nothing the show ever outright says "this is why X is this way" but you yourself just realize "oh THAT's why", while it not being SO important that you miss out on anything if you didn't catch it.

I think that's the thing. Giving the audience opportunity to digest something is awesome. Book of Boba is an example of taking a fairly interesting concept, and packing it with useless jargon, clunky dialogue and other bollocks. Yet Episode 5 (whichever one was basically the mandolorian) was a master class on how to do an live adaptation; showing, not telling and basically establishing the conflict for future seasons; without being idiotproof. The writers of the other episodes quite frankly could've benefited greatly from that example of less is more. Real good stories have elements that are never said, but can be inferred over time and makes us feel rewarded for believing in the world. Real people have aspects about them that is real, but they will never verbalise that part of themselves.

Ehh there are more problems than the medium here.... The writing is just messy. The timeline jumps all over the place even within episodes and it also jumps from character to character making it near impossible for anyone who isn't familiar with the stories its being adapted from to connect anything and no amount of animation is going to fix something like that. Additionally, they keep trying to do the game of thrones thing where they jump from character to character but are inconsistent with how they develop the characters. i.e. we get all of Yen's back story and quite a bit of Ciri's but we know almost nothing of Geralt from the show itself. He is not the main character of the show and it kind of messes with expectations of people going into it who had played the game and were expecting Geralt to be the star. Costumes were also atrocious and some of the elements of the story just don't make any damn sense.

@@onepresence9460 Again I'll say writing and story is equal importance to how its presented. Alita is proof you can translate anime to live action fairly well. Look at most of the live adaptations though and the writing is crap and no medium change is going to save that. Resident evil... pretty bad. First one was alright but not stellar. Mario Brothers first movie.... made no sense relative to the game and was garbage. Bloodrayne... bad writing/plot etc. Sure animation lends itself to certain kinds of storytelling but at its core you have to have something worth making the visuals for. I mean Sandy effect for David was pretty well represented over 20 years ago with matrix bullet time. Again going to Alita you can see a pretty good example of cyberware. All that Arcane, Edgerunners and Castlevania proves is that animation has had the best successful adaptations not that its the best format. I mean take a look at Bladerunner and its sequel and you can get an inkling at what can be done as well as far as city/environment development. Its mostly a matter of the pieces just never seem to come together for good adaptations elsewhere. Don't pigeonhole it as I'd like to see game adaptations be good across multiple mediums. I think you kind of missed the point here: "Excellent writing, wonderful presentation and good characters" can only truly shine when you aren't forced to make compromises to adhere to some previous expectations - especially in the case of Cyberpunk you would have to make choice for the series whereas in the game you can give the player the freedom. Take the lifepath for example: You could thematically build a whole series around one specific lifepath, irritating everyone whose head canon does not match - or ignore the concept completely, comprising V's backstory. Being a prequel does not make them better or worse by itself, it offers the freedom to tell better/more stories

Theres definitely times when adapting the story can work. Imo, Fate worked because they took the time to adapt both UBW and HF. Creating a more complete story. On their own, they're good, but incomplete imo. So, it's not that adapting the story of a game is impossible, it's just absurdly hard.

Castlevania is a joke and offense to the games. I don't know much about Arcane and LoL but CV has nothing on Edgerunners as an adaptation. Despite its flaws, Edgerunners very accurately depicted the world of CP2077 and tells its own story in this setting. CV is so subpar in adapting its source material, it can't even be called a fanfiction. The lore and characters were butchered so hard, Uwe Boll's movies look like masterpieces next to this. I can't believe I have to say this.

I think what makes cyberpunk well-made is its balance in the plots and settings. You're in a world where (with technology) the sky is the limit for the imagination. At the same time, it keeps you grounded with real world emotions and experiences. Hence the colorful art of the city, people, etc. Yet the hellish conflict and environment. The ending was also really well balanced as well. Where the MC doesn't have the cliché "win", but the outcome is something that's still inspiring.

9:14 This is how I viewed anime adaptation in general too IF I read the manga. Basically all manga readers always talk about is "how well they adapted particular scenes" and not talk about how amazing the story is, the characters, the writing, the dialogue, why? Because they already know that, they already discussed it a long time ago before it gets anime adaptation. Hence, now I don't read manga first before the anime, and now I can enjoy anime the fullest by going in full blind and know nothing about it except for the synopsis.

These adaptations work because they use previously established information from the game such as the settings and relations. Using these, they then create a whole separate story that is loosely connected to the main game story. Not all adaptations need to be a direct reenactment of the game.

Another great possibility is, rather than a prequel, make a parallel story. I really liked how in GTA4 you had the expansions with the protagonists doing the same quest. Imagine a Cyberpunk Edgerunners: Corpo, and it follows a kid from David's school who we only see on the background, or one who was in the car attacked when his mother died, or someone who sees any of the game events from their window... That would be great in itself.

This would be another good way to tell a story or expand on a world. Like in FFX, we follow Yuna and Tidus on their journey. But Isaaru and Donna both had their own cross continent journeys, and came to different conclusions. How did those characters get around, what experiences formed their decisions, who did they interact with? That could be it's own separate story.

well guess what, they aren't the same. Arcane is a MASTERPIECE. Edgerunner is arguable. if you like the whole aesthetic and backstory of the show then it might be masterpiece for you. i enjoyed both, just disappointed how they rushed everything on the last quarter of the show. From the scene of Maine's cyberpsychosis symptoms, everything start to happen without further elaborating why and how things happen. they make kiwi betray them for no reason , yet in her last breath she chose to help them, they made an awesome badass and unique character Rebecca and they killed her in an instant like they were squashing a useless side character. like wtf, she could've been a good mascot for the show and even a bridge for next season where becca couldve come meet brand new characters. they shouldve done that instead of leaving lucy alive with no more reason and relevance anyway cause she already reached her dream of going to the moon. There are bunch of offsets in the show, it wasn't perfectly executed and so many materials to utilize that they just scrap.

I would say The Witcher Netflix show would have all around positive amazing feedbacks if the showrunners are more humble & faithful with the adaptation of the OG books. The Witcher games are actually the "sequel" of the books, based on the timelines. Basically Witcher showrunners have all the perfect recipe & ingredients, but opting to change it for ego boosting. This is coming from a fan who love the show regardless btw. Tbh, going in to season 3, they still have big chance to do it. Even Henry Cavill aka Geralt of Rivia himself is fighting to get the story to be more inline with the books.

From the crosswalks making the same noise, to the guns and the cars make the same in-game noises. Even getting a glimpse of a slightly younger Rogue in Afterlife was sweet. My favorite thing was the implementations of phones in the anime. It felt the exact same once again as how the game feels when you answer a call or make one. I unfortunately got spoiled on a lot of the stuff because I watched it a bit late, but i still thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. P.S. Sequels only really work if they don’t really involve the characters from the games unfortunately. Games work better as the end of the character’s story than the beginning of one.
