One of my favourite play ever!! Beyond the themes developed and the characters portrayed in the play - Cyrano has always been a very inspiring figure to me, especially when I was a teenager- , I absolutely love the musicality of the text, may it be in English or in French (but, of course, especially in French, my native language and that of the play). I must have seen two or three different representations of the play and I love seeing the different choices made by the play directors. Have you watched the 1990 movie adaptation starring Depardieu? I strongly advise you too - it's absolutely terrific!! Depardieu embodies the character perfectly - fiction comes into life (he also played Le Comte de Monte-Cristo if you read the book - one of my favourite novel of all time). In my opinion, this version is much better than the older, black and white one. Also, quite recently, a play on Edmond Rostand's writing of Cyrano was written and it has been made into a movie untitled Edmond (2019). I went to the play house to watch it and I also watched the movie. I found them both very enjoyable so this play/movie is another suggestion that I would make. If you ever watch them, I'd love to discuss them with you. Thank you for the wonderful content you share in your videos! :)

Thank you so much for the recommendations! I've only seen the 1950 film, and since it is public domain, it makes for great b-roll for KZfaq. But I'm stoked to check out the 1990 one, and that play sounds incredible! I agree that Cyrano is a fascinating character. I'd love to play him on stage one day, but alas, my French pronunciation is criminally bad... Thank you for the kind feedback!

There is an opera based on this play by the (somewhat infamous) composer Franco Alfano. It has not been performed often, and it is interesting that you mention that the role seems 'unperformable to all but those who actually perform it', because the vocal writing has been criticised as 'torturous' in the opera, lol. It is uncomfortable how much I saw myself in Cyrano when he revealed his monumentally low self esteem.

I had no idea about the opera. Thank you for sharing! And hey, Cyrano might have low self-esteem, but the people around him hold him in the highest regard. I'm sure they're a lot people in your life that feel the same about you.

Idk maybe it's like saying Pinocchio gets what he wants By having people write his scripts And generating intrigue + rumour. Considering that this was written for bourgeois folks, it's maybe a primer for truly understanding high society...
