According to the National Safety Council, the odds of someone riding a motorcycle dying in an accident is 1 in 747. That's not even 1%. And that's a lifetime risk. The chances of a fatality in a motorcycle accident (if you have one) are approximately 30 times higher than if your in a car (accident is car vs motorcycle.). Motorcycle accidents have a staggering 80% injury or death rate. Bicycles are nearly as high in death rates and miles people travel on those are quite a bit less. So what we know for certain is that cars and trucks are death machines

@@dailyrider2975 Airbag vests and airbag pants is the answer. I recommend the Alpine Air Tech vests, like the Air Tech 5, 10, and Air Tech Offroad. For the airbag pants, Helite airbag jeans is the only option. Forgot to add, for the Helite airbag jeans, you want to run the tether point towards the bike end of the bike, maybe play around with it, and find a set-up that will guarantee deployment and the detachment of the tether before your pelvis area hits the gas tank. That way, you can take advantage of the jean's ability to inflate before smashing your balls on the gas tank. I am also going to copy and paste an old comment that you can maybe use to persuade and or calm your family on for bike safety. "Woah, I got some convincing answers for you. I am also in the same boat. Got my learners permit at 15 and got my license at 16. I am a pro at driving and riding because of years of racing bicycles around corners as well as video game experience, so I also got a manual car as my first car at 16. I am 18 now and can do everything in a manual car including heel toe downshifting, etc. I prefer motorcycles as well, but hear me out here. There is a campaign this May for motorcycle safety awareness month, and two motorcycle gear stores are advertising and hosting a campaign called "airbags save lives". You may be thinking airbags for motorcyclists? Yes they exist in forms like the airbag vest and airbag pant. It has been mandatory in MotoGP since 2018. I recommend telling your parents about airbags and showing them a video about Cycle-gear's airbag safety video. I also have a comment I shared with another person who was similar of your age. I personally also want to get a motorcycle and I already convinced my parents so I will get one later in my life as I live in California and would love to lane split/ filter as well as save money by riding motorcycles. Anyways here is the comment: "If you enjoy riding bikes and are somewhat skilled at it, I highly recommend it. My parents, particularly my mom, is fine with me wanting a motorcycle later in life, as I have proved my worth with years of experience racing bicycles around corners and never getting injured. Motorcycles are definitely more dangerous than a car normally, no questioning that, but if you compare it to the broad majority of other things people do, it is not that risky honestly. You probably have seen countless news stories of helicopters and private plane crashes, to getting killed in the ocean playing by the waves. And something also interesting is how directly correlated car dependency is to health complication deaths. Motorcycling is a form of low impact physical exercise or high level of exercise when racing, and that shaves off dangerous diseases that the public are unaware of. Sitting in your car in traffic is very bad for you body, especially when done during long periods of time in traffic. Horse riding and skiing are statistically more dangerous than motorcycles, and people literally die all the time from stair cases, car crashes, and more. In fact, in a bad car wreck, your organs often get ruptured and the interesting thing is that organ damage is never reported in car accidents due to it requiring an MRI or X-ray scan all over the body, which makes the public assume that cars with seat-belts and airbags are safe, when in reality, they are dangerous as F when traveling at high speeds just like a bike." "All of this dangerous talk is about motorcycle riding with normal gear. If you want to make motorcycling super safe to levels that it is even sometimes safer than driving a car or riding a bicycle, then look no further to the airbag protective gear technology. I know from watching this video, you are probably scared of getting injured the same way, but hear me out, if she was wearing an Airbag vest, particularly an electronic one like the Alpine Air Tech airbag vest, that airbag vest is so dead accurate at deploying and so goddamn fast it deploys within 40 milliseconds. It takes 100-150 milliseconds to blink, which shows how fast that airbag can deploy. In this crash, the airbag would have deployed right before she slammed her body into the mountain side. She would have walked away, looking all buff like Michelin man. There are even more stories of airbag vests preventing so many injuries, to stories like: "Airbag vest saved my buddy's life. We were riding some back roads and he hit some gravel and low sided off a 50 foot embankment. His airbag vest went off, locked his helmet in place as he hit his helmet on a tree and went bouncing down the hill. He made it out of that situation with a concussion and minor injuries. I now ride all the time with my Hit-Air." "Fortnine did an excellent video on this. Going through the physics. An airbag vest absorbs something along the lines of 50x more energy than CE rated padding. It's not even close." "Airbags vest and airbag pants absorb 95% of the impact force and reduce injuries up to 60% with just a basic Helite airbag vest. If you wear an Alpine Air Tech airbag vest, combined with the Helite Airbag Jeans, which there is also lower body airbag protection technology as well, you can reduce injuries by over 60% over wearing normal gear. This technology is revolutionary, and if you need to convince your parents that you want to ride a motorcycle with safety in mind, you now have something to share to them. If you are still unconvinced, here are some more quotes, "Just watch a video from Fortnine about the airbag vests. In his video, he showed a standard motorcycle armor placed on top of a cake. When the hammer hits the armor at high force, the armor distributes the force evenly, still transmitting a lot of energy, smooshing the cake. Whereas the same test, done with an airbag placed over the cake, the hammer hits the airbag at high force, and only a small scar is shown on the cake. A sharp contrast compared to a smooshed cake." "MotoGP riders also wear airbag suits. If you watch serious crashes that should have ended in being crippled and dead, the riders walk away with nothing, not even a scratch, maybe just soreness and a bruise. In fact, there has been incidents where the riders come off at over 200 mph, and walked away again, with no injuries due to their gear and the airbag suits. Times have changed, motorcycles are not as risky as they used to be with airbag technology and modern riding gear. This is the best way to honestly convince your parents or any parents to let you get a motorcycle. The technology proves itself, and they are not crazy expensive either. The most expensive one is only $1000." "If you ask me on what airbag vests I recommend, I recommend the Alpine Air Tech series of vest, I would say either pick the Tech Air 5, Tech Air 10, or the Alpine Air Tech Offroad, which the off-road vest can be used in street mode, which makes it behave like a street vest, but with the extra protection neck and reload-ability of canisters unique to it. The Air Tech Off-road deploys up to 2 times before needing to be reloaded with another 2 canisters of which can be ordered from Alpine for $170, after 4 deployments, Alpine recommends sending in the vest for a re-inspection, and to replace the canisters and bladder for you for $300. For the other Alpine Air Tech vests besides the Off-road vest, they have to be sent back to the manufacturer after every deployment. If you want to go really cheap, the Helite Turtle 2, which only protects the vital organs and spine, can be had for $690 and can be reloaded infinitely times with only needing a $30 canister replacement of which takes less than 60 seconds DIY job." "As for the lower body, you can get the Helite Airbag jeans which will protect the hips, tailbone, femur, pelvis, etc, anything major in the lower body. Just for more facts, A Stanford Study says that these jeans protect and absorb 6x more impact force than a regular foam protector." "The airbags I personally prefer currently at the moment are the Alpine Air Tech Offload due to it's reload-ability and unique neck protection compared to other Alpine vests, and the Helite airbag jeans. Wear both of these airbags, you have near full complete body protection. So boom, you have ultimate motorcycle protection." "Just keep telling your parents about these things and hopefully they will change their wind and wise up to this new technology that is consistently and constantly being improved through MotoGP racing. Motorcycling was never more safer until the airbag technology. Just get the best gear, including the best boots for protection, the best elbow and gloves and the best helmet. That way, you are fully decked out and are extremely safe and prepared for an accident along with your airbag vest and pant that will make you get up off the floor during an accident looking like Michelin man while the car drivers are jaw dropped from seeing someone turn so buff and puffed with airbag vest and pants covering you looking like a juggernaut from Call of Duty as you get up. Motorcycling is only going to keep getting safer from now." This statistic is inaccurate. They include the entire population in the sample, instead of only including those who actually ride motorcycles (this explains why the likelihood of dying in a car accident is so much higher according to them). But it's, obviously, poor calculation. Most of the sample in their ratio effectively has a 0% probability of dying on a motorcycle because they don't ride motorcycles. Makes no sense to include them.

This is the argument that I have been having with my wife. I want to buy a motorcycle she says no they're dangerous I tell her I'd be smart and ride ATGAT and not be stupid she says she isn't worried about me but other drivers. I told her that dealing with other drivers is largely a skill issue and that I'd actively work to become more highly skilled then most riders. In addition to all that I have informed her of these stats. Luckily with this and our financial situation I tqlked her into agreeing with me getting a motorcycle and will be getting one later this year.

I also think it’s about making sure you are taking every precaution you can to make it safe. Check out my video on life and risk and riding ‘is riding motorcycles dangerous? | WHY RIDE?’ Where I go into a few other aspects of how to keep yourself safe and why you can still ride safely.
