Explore the history of court jesters, from 7th century China to medieval Europe, and how they were able to speak truth to power.
--
Contrary to common belief, jesters weren’t just a medieval European phenomenon but flourished in other times and cultures. The first reliably recorded jester is thought to be You Shi, of 7th century BCE China. Jesters had unique relationships to power: they could be viewed as objects of mockery or as entertainers and trusted companions. Beatrice K. Otto digs into history's most infamous jokers.

It's even more committed to it, he wasn't allowed to joke on the royal family but he made a joke about the king, the king got upset and said he would pardon if he come up with a witty joke. Then the jester proceed to make a joke about the queen. after the old age death line he was spared but still got banished

The United States harasses victims of deviant sadistic maltreatment by military Child SA’ers who are misusing advanced technology they have access to. They are using technology that is meant to keep Americans safe to secretly watch children, show them deviant content through hacking their devices, and touch them inappropriately or give them incapacitating substances. Victims of this crime are R’d, and tortured and then as they get older are then stalked and harassed both on and offline by creeps that are helping their friends get away with their crimes. They sabotage the lives of their victims to make them as hellish as possible. This goes on for years, and it seems to last their entire lives. Some victims may not even know they’re victims because much of the R happens when they are slipped something or asleep. The only reason you may know is because they may leave behind physical evidence like bodily fluids, bruises, or scratches. The men who do this think that they can shame their victims into silence because some of the actions are coerced. They think that the more depraved they can be with innocent children the more likely they will be too ashamed to speak out. At least some men with access to this technology are using to hurt and R children. The victims are left with little recourse because they likely won’t know who R’d them. They try to invade every part of their victims' lives to try to shame and mock them into silence.

William the Conqueror had a jester name Taillefer, who was a beast. He rode beside William during the Norman invasion of England, and would lift the troop's spirits by singing about heroic deeds. When they reached enemy lines at Hastings, he taunted the English by juggling his sword and was challenged by an English soldier, who he killed before charging the English lines alone, while singing and was said to have killed at least four more Englishmen before being cut down.

The ability to laugh at oneself is so profound. One would assume that old royalty was ruthless and cruel, unquestionable - however the presence of jesters seem to indicate that they too had a good laugh. This is one of the few cultural characteristics found across the medieval period in human history. I recall watching an art form called 'Chakyarkoothu' from my state in India which was practiced by court and temple jesters. Truly an art!

A lot of this is propaganda. Monarchy throughout history has been nothing but cruel and even their jesters participated in their madness. Leadership must be constantly challenged and kept in check by the outside. There were jesters who were executioners, some even killed for the king for said king's entertainment. The reason so many positive cases are brought up is because historical societies in America are funded by the American government. Go to europe and learn true history. It is not ever clean. Much of it covered up at the time it was written only to be uncovered through thorough investigation later.

It’s fascinating that as long as they said it in a funny way, a jester could say pretty whatever they wanted. Jesters are often viewed as lower court members, who only exists to be laughed at. But they were one of the most powerful court members, due to the ability to say damn near anything. If I could go back in time I’d be a jester in a heartbeat

Yes. The relationship between politics, comedy and jesters is age old. That's why Victor Hugo's novel 'The Man Who Laughs' is so powerful because Hugo used this very concept to criticise the dukes of Paris. The Man who Laughs is also prime inspiration for 'Joker' from Batman comics, whose various interpretations have portrayed him as a critic of the modern society or the "established order". And this is also a reason why a lot of contemporary comedy is so critical of the political scenario. Because if you are gonna tell people that they are getting screwed over, you might as well make them laugh while you're at it.

So I guess the Jester has enough influence to be in a deck of cards, but apparently not enough to be a chess piece. Then again, the same could be said about the bishop and knight not being in the deck of cards so go figure.
