another possible answer could be that there was a low representation of icelandic people/"björks" in music and just her first name would make enough of an impression on the rest of the world to be memorable. maybe also about a sense of familiarity/intimacy(first name vs. first name last name) or belief that her music and personality would stand out without her adopting a stage name. i wish whoever made the video asked why she might use her first name instead of just padding out the video

@@Bear27012 yes her full name is Björk Guðmundsdóttir meaning that she is Björk daughter of Guðmundur (dóttir = daugther). We don't use surnames/family names.

@@Lilswagjr surnames have never existed in Icelandic. Surnames didn't exist in Europe until the 11th century. It was never made mandatory in Iceland and most likely due to isolation it never became "a trend" even though the Danes that used to rule us would have preferred it. There where some that wanted it and there are still about 2% (or less) of the population that carry a "family name". Guess we are just too proud of our heritage that we prefer not to use surnames.

@@masbroinside444It's hard to get used to. I used to not be able to listen to radiohead because Thom's voice was sometimes grating. All I could really do was force myself to listen and eventually I ended up liking it. This in turn helped me get used to Bjork's voice fairly quickly.

Rather than just Swedish, Bjork is an old Nordic name, so you'll find it in Norway and the Faroe Islands as well. It's fairly common in Iceland.

Yeah, didn't understand the Swedish connection. Björk comes from Old Norse, the original langue of the Nordic countries (except Finland of course ;) ). It is common in Iceland, both as first name as well as middle name. We don't use surnames so there is no "Björk family" 😅

Why is her name weird? Because it’s difficult to pronounce in English? Bjørk is the name of a common tree in Scandinavia ( both Norway, Sweden and Denmark use the word bjørk) - and we use it to decorate everywhere on our national day. Just because Americans doesn’t get it it’s not weird

I never understood those pearls in front of her eyes aesthetic in her costumes until one day I did acid and watched a music video of hers, and quickly noticed the effect it has in the dark and while tripping, they become glowing eyes and fade in and out with the graphical environments she oh so loves to create. In Iceland they have laws to preserve their language. So children are required to be named from the official list of boys or girls names. So they can't have a son and name him Lance, he has to be Bjorn. Every year half the children are named whatever that year's popular name is. Half the girls will be Bjork, and half the boys will be Sven. Next year those names are likely to be less popular.

There are no trees in Iceland. At least not such a huge areas as shown in video. It is just one tree in whole area, probably just homeowner planting one imported .. next to the house ..
