The Armchair Historian, the British did not invade and conquer India 🇮🇳, because there was no ‘’India’’ until the British made it... They beat the small ‘’INDEPENDENT’’ principalities, that were fighting each other constantly. This meant that the impact on trade was too much for the IEC, so they decided to join these up. This was done in the hope that as a single country, they would have stability... And that’s why the powers to be also didn’t want the India 🇮🇳, Pakistan 🇵🇰 partition to happen. And they did try to stop it from happening, but Gandhi and Jinnah wouldn’t/couldn’t allow a single country to remain in place.....

@M K England is in a union with Scotland you moron, the 1707 act of union which was ratified by both the Scottish and English parliaments after being considered in 1706 which finally passed by both Scottish and English parliamentarians on May 1st 1707. Before this act of union (which was a politically based union) they only had a 'personal union' which began in 1603 when King James VI of Scots took the English throne in the year 1603 and became King James I of England also - making him a double monarch of two politically separate kingdoms. Scotland and England before this in the distant past had on and off wars, a tit for tat affair where both invaded each other at times of war and at times of peace shared trade, but neither conquered the other or made the other a colony, sometime English forts were in Scotland and sometimes Scottish forts were erected in the parts of northern England that Scotland invaded. But both ended off on a stalemate, came to share the same monarchs, the same parliament and same currency, foreign affairs and national army each with their own law system, education, Kirk and regional regiments.

In short- They came as traders, Obtained trade rights from local rulers, misused trade rights, governor of bengal took action, his general was paid off and brits took control of bengal, brits used local rulers against other rulers to gain control of certain region, Subsidary alliance was established with many of local kings allowed deployment of british army in nearly whole India. Doctrine of lapse was imposed mamy kingdome were took over by brits(why they did not resist? Because british army was already deployed in their kingdoms). In 1857 indians revolted, british crown took control, Nationalist movements rose and India gained independence in 1947.

@Flavious_

@britopia Almost of the substantially large nations have had a time when their centralised power gradually degraded, British entered India during that phase, we had an empire during the times of Greek civilization which united the Indian subcontinent much before the British could do it for themselves, well at that time, Britian wasn't even discovered. We also had a empire in the mediaeval times, in our sacred texts we recognize our borders through our pilgrimages which are there as far as Himalayas to the "Indian" ocean. And if the British united us, their politics during the time of departure created divisions after divisions. They left us with a chronic disease (a specific nation) and our coffers all empty.

Well sir, being an Indian I agree we weren't having the unity among the 547 princely states or kingdoms. Taking the opportunity of which the British annexed multiple kingdoms. What Lord Wellesley said was wrong about Akbar's rule, because emperor Jalal Uddin Akbar's Mughal Empire which was vast and also covered the land of Marathas and the Sikhs, was also the richest state in the world, having a lot of gold, diamond, pearls and spices under its earth. However The British exploited the land resulting in the widespread poverty in India since 1970s...

Wrong. We actually had a unity before British . Maratha empire was unifying India but failed because of British. India was never a 547 princely states before British. 547 princely states occured only after British left India at 1947 . Because there were no leaders or empires at 1947 . So for 1 year india was separated into 547 states until the legend Sardar Vallabhai Patel came

India as a nation never really existed until the British consolidated its borders under their rule. Until the 1700s 'Indian' actually referred to the inhabitants of the Indus river valley, a name actually given to them by the ancient Greeks. When the British entered the arena, India was technically a collection of kingdoms with two major players, the Mughals and the Marathas, which were at constant war with one another in the same way that Germany, Japan and China were prior to their eventual unification. Up to the 1700s calling a Maratha, Sikh, Rajput or Mughal an Indian would either confuse or amuse them in the same way that considering all native Americans the same would, instead of recognizing the different tribes - Sioux, Apache, Cherokee etc. The people of that era were not stupid. They were just overwhelmed by the machinations of a much more powerful and united enemy.

Many people here are asking why Indians are so hell bent on accusing the British for the destruction of the Indian subcontinent whereas the Chinese do not seem to hold grudge towards British. Because China was never a colony of British . They occupied some ports and some small patches of land. They just forced Chinese dynasty to accept trade practices which were more favorable towards the British. Whereas British exploited India and its resources to its core. A subcontinent which was one of the richest before the arrival of British was left in shambles. The harmony between the people of different religion and language of the country was totally destroyed. India has been the country which accepted every faith and the assimilation between them was wonderful. But the British knew that they couldn't capture this land without dividing them. So they started providing incentives to the kingdoms which were searching for conquest and captured others kingdoms. Eventually when they became more stronger they overthrew all the kings and only puppet kings were allowed to rule. Remember that when British left , they left a India with 500 princely states not an united one which all of you seem to think. It was the leaders of India mainly Sardar Ballav Bhai Patel who united all of them. The fact that we were deprived of the Industrial Revolution and all the resources annoys us the most. The Indians in general don't hold any grudge towards the present UK, but it pisses us when they act like ignorant children and do not owe the reparations. We are not asking for any economic help since you must know that we would surpass Britain by the end of this Year in terms nominal GDP, we just want you to accept that you also did many atrocities in the past. And I would suggest all of the people to study History and do a web search before posting these type of ignorant questions. Good luck to all of you.

The key developments of Britain's industrial revolution were already in place before the Battle of Buxar. Going back even further in time, Tsar Peter the Great of Russia personally worked in Dutch and British shipyards, in order to understand the naval and military technologies they were developing. Not doing something similar was one of many calamitous failures by Indian (and Chinese) rulers. Even just having ambassadors in European capitals sending back copies of the latest scientific journals would have helped. Printing Indian scientific journals so that Indian researchers could support each other would probably have helped even more.

@@PastPresented I do accept that Indians were too busy in internal skirmishes at that point of time but if British would not captured India at that point of that then Rajput were going to. And in few years the stable kingdom would have been able to focus on industry and we had some very good scholars and resources which would have helped in speedy development. British did not just exploit natural resources but also human resources too. You can just look at the literacy figures. Hope you understand.
@PastPresented
@PastPresented 5 жыл бұрын
When in the history of the subcontinent were Indians not "too busy in internal skirmishes"? The British never truly "captured India" which was why Sardar Patel had to be so ruthless after 1947. What the British did do was stop Marathas fighting Tamils, Afghans fighting Sikhs, Pindaris looting everybody ... As for the literacy figures: printing was originally used well over a thousand years ago to spread Buddhist teachings, yet it remained virtually unused in India, the home of Buddhism, until 200 years ago. That's centuries of wasted opportunities to share knowledge.

Therefore I testify its not the British Empire's fault anymore especially something that was in the colonial era. I believe this is my history too and the Indian Subcontinent are my people. In 1947 when partition came to India and split the Indian subcontinent into India and Pakistan it was due to Indian leader doing and economic and social compromise with the British especially the leaders under Gandhi and his ring of leaders. They weren't considerate to the Indian people let alone not serving our need wants and interests. Jinnah was a lot worse he divided the Desis between hindu and muslims reating into breaking the subcontinent and making a uncertain nation called Pakistan and destroyed Generations after he later made Pakistan into a commonwealth nation under the newly form U.K.

My Grandparents were from the erstwhile Kingdom of Travancore, which was not directly ruled by the British in the South. The British helped us fight Tipu Sultan in the North and then we became a sort of protectorate. An example of this is that we didn't send our army to help them fight World War 1, while other parts of India did.

How to colonize a territory: - Eng, Fr, Neth, Bel: Erase the locals or confine them to reserves, repopulate with your own people, build factories and plantations, get some slaves to work in them, enrich the whites through trade and exploitation of resources, turn it into a puppet/failed state, never totally leave. - Rome, Greece, Spain: Conquer the land by war and agreements, alphabetize and convert the locals, make them your own citizens, build universities, temples and cities, enrich the whites and the locals through trade and exploitation of resources, get looted by your enemies, collapse. - Portugal: Lets do both!

Colonization of a populated area is a form of conquest, Shivaji the not-so-great... I think you've misunderstood the concepts. The colonization happened through victories of war, like any other conquest. Colonization is just a form of conquest where the victor colonizes through either population replacement or economical exploitation, the latter being the case regarding India. Just to put a definition on the word which you do not comprehend (Conquest). -> "The subjugation and assumption of control of a place or people by military force.".

the difference in mentality between Chinese and indians are rather interesting, Indians on any videos related to British rule often talk about how Britain plundered the indian subcontinent, yet in videos in Chinese about western attempts to colonize China, Chinese would often talk about the incompetence of Qing dynasty, and their failure to modernize, they put more blame on themselves, "why didn't we industrialize", whereas indians, it's all about it's someone else's fault. very interesting.
