Why did Captain Rex hesitate to shoot Ahsoka Tano when Order 66 was executed? The behavioral modification biochip Darth Sidious had implanted in each clonetrooper contained 150 emergency directives. Captain Rex was with Ahsoka Tano when the Sith Lord ordered the execution of Order 66. Standing before her with weapons drawn, Rex struggled with following the order. Shedding a tear as he realizes what's happening, he shakes with internal conflict.

Through his service with Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka, he grew close to the two Jedi and became a mentor to the young Padawan. But he fought his programming with more than friendship. Knowing he only had moments to help her, Rex tells Ahsoka to find Fives. Clonetrooper CT-5555 had discovered the inhibitor chips were a plot to destroy the Jedi, but no one believed him. Until now. Rex's mind was completely controlled by the inhibitor chip, but he was able to resist, if only for a moment, because he knew the clones would no longer have free will.

Another reason could be that, Rex did try to train his mind to resist force mind control ever since the first Clone Wars movie where assaj ventress tricked him into betraying Anakin and Ashoka position. His goal was to resist from betraying his Allie against enemy force users.

The mind control is only on the weak minded. Rex is clearly a smart dude so it didn't work on him You know this because he called Anakin by his first name when both him and Anakin know that he would only address him as General Skywalker. Rex knew this, that's why he called him Anakin because if you noticed after anakin got the call he figured something was wrong because of how Rex addressed him

I think that Rex remembered what Fives had said about the chips and because he understood what was going on he was able to resist it more effectively than if he was unaware of the chip.

He knew the other orders, most likely emergency order to stop the senate leader palatine. I think it was order 65, he tried resisting using secondary order

I think it might have been several factors. 1. Like you said knowing it was there and what was happening let him resist some. 2. He took training to resist force mind control after what happened with ventress which could have allowed him to resist better. 3. It's entirely possible that being around Ashoka and Anakin made him different like we've seen and theorized and that difference in thought process and whatnot also gave him the ability to resist some.

If you rewatch the scene where order 66 was declared and all of the 501st were turning to Ahsoka you can see some of the clones also hesitating to shoot her as they lowered their blasters to pause or glance around at the other clones before eventually falling to the control of the chip and aiming their blasters at her

*Arch Trooper Fives* had saved millions of people because of the sacrifices he had to make and *Captain Rex* remembered everything about the night that his *friend/Brother* had died. This story was a *great way to tie everything together* and also to have a *nice call back* to the friendship of *Fives* and *Rex* because fighting in the *Clone Wars* (or any other battle) brings people into an unexplainable *Bond Of Trust* which, ended up being the *ultimate tribute to a fallen warrior* and something we could all learn from!!! 👲🔑💖

I don’t know how similar the stories are, but in Jedi: Fallen Order, during the memory of Cal Kestis as a padawan attempting to escape the Clone Battalion onboard the Republic cruiser, the troopers hunting him actually sound quite bloodthirsty instead of remorseful, and you see minutes earlier, that Cal had quite a bit of a close relationship with some of the clones. Going from such a close relationship to “that Jedi can’t have gotten far! Find and kill him!” Is actually quite jarring.

@@151monka Yeah, but my point is, is that this video’s story about Rex, the other clones and Asoka, is far different to Fallen Order’s interpretation of Order 66. Rex and Asoka’s story sounds much more painful and remorseful than Fallen Order’s clone troopers, despite having a similarly loving relationship. If Fallen Order was in anyway similar to Rex’s clone troopers, they would have been screaming at Cal and Jaro Tapal to run away.

@@maximumdon7637 The difference between Rex and those other clones, is that Rex was treated like a real person and allowed to grow beyond his original “programming”. He went from Captain to Clone ARC Commander through sheer experience, not through formal training. Rex was already the most “human” clone thanks to his life experiences and Anakin/Ahsoka’s influence on Rex only led him to be more independent.

Cody actually did hesitate just a bit. Immediately after the order you see him stand there with his head down in an attempt to resist. Unfortunately Rex had one advantage that nobody talks about that Cody didn’t have. Rex was a very physical fighter during the war, and as such sustained alot of physical abuse, especially head trauma, which messed with the inhibitor chip and caused a malfunction, allowing him to resist.

Another reason Rex had the ability to hesitate a bit was that Ahsoka was not a Jedi. Ultimately, it did not prevent him from executing Order 66, but I think it's why he lasted a bit longer while other clones like Cody were quick to act on the order to exterminate the Jedi

The others, not realizing the chips, quickly compartmentalized - they were now exactly the sort of people who would gun down a child they had fought beside and lauded. Rex was able to keep alive the thought that what he was doing was wrong. I think the Directive had some extra feature to loop them right back to the cold mantra 'A Good Soldier Follows Orders', not even realizing there was something to fight against.

People don't understand how timelines work. There are two canon timelines. The Lucas timeline, which states the entire EU is canon. The Disney timeline, which states only the mainline 6 movies and Disney materials are canon. Things get messy however since Disney still relies on EU for their new properties, such as The Mandalorian, or the KOTOR remake. So badically the EU is loosely canon excepting when it contradicts current or new properties. Essentially canonicity of EU fluctuates with the needs of their new projects. Why they felt the need to spend this much money on an IP only to throw away 90% of its material I will never understand.

I want to believe that as Ahsoka wasn't a 'Jedi', the chip struggled to force Rex to attack her as he mentally tries to overrule the order as she left the Jedi Order, beign no more a Jedi, giving him the chance to tell her about Fives. After all, no other clone struggled to attack the Jedi when the order was given. They were Jedi, and Ahsoka left the order time ago.

Long answer: The order is to execute the Jedi for treason against the Republic. The problem is, Ahsoka Tano is no longer a Jedi and hasn't been for some time.

My theory is linked to another theory about Rex. Some say He is a defect clone meaning not that He is worse just different then other clones. We see him act more independent, while the kaminoans wanted clones not to question orders. This could mean that Rex was genetically slightly different so the Chip doesnt work on him. Just a theory tho

That was solely on Rex. He issued the kill order on her, labeling her as an enemy combatant, plus he couldn't explain away that error to Jesse.

i cant really explain without spoiling (and yall should really watch the season finale, its the most amazing star wars ever) but basically ahsoka uses that logic later that she is not a jedi anymore but the commander jesse firmly refused and continued to issue the order, so basically * she was still on the list of targets * same as anakin got removed from the list by palpatine, since if it was solely on "he's one of the jedi" then they wouldve targeted him as well, the theory is either that the list was made in advance on the chip and he already expected him to join or that he could change it and removed him

I think there could be a few reasons: Rex is an older model of clone, and each new batch was more in line with programming (the first clones considered too free to be controlled and almost killed for it), so Rex had the orders but they weren’t as ingrained in him. Rationally, Ahsoka’s no longer a Jedi. She’s outside the order, and only with him on mission (not as an official jedi general). And last but not least, the power of friendship/ respect/ his last remaining moments of free will.

Don't know why nobody has noticed this, but if you listen to Jesse, you'll know that Ahsoka was specifically targeted, so the whole "but the order said jedi and she ain't one so maybe they hesitated" has no merit whatsoever. Jesse says that they were specifically told to kill her, which means that Palpatine saw her as a threat.

It's kinda like a stronger version of hypnosis. If you're aware that someone trying to be hypnotize you,then you will be immune to its effects. Rex was one of the very few that understood what was happening, and it gave him a few brief seconds to resist and tell Ahsoka vital information.

There’s a line in the fives arc about the Jedi encouraging free thinking in the clones actually interfered with the inhibitor chip’s ability to control the clones. So it could be speculated that is a factor into Rex’s hesitation

Another thing to keep in mind is that Rex also have a higher level of free will over a general clone he came up with the idea of modding his armor - combining the better parts of the gen 1 and 2 armor together

He dint just fight it out of friendship but also out of love. he didn’t want to hurt anyone. Even after order 66 he was never the same. he still wanted to help people. and to be honest he only wanted to fight droids. But like omega from the bad batch said: you can’t help it. He probably told himself that. And yet he remains strong to this day and yes its been a lot of troubling times in his life he still has courage and that is a amazing character ❤

Rex was not only one of the most independent clones, he was also the only clone aware of the chips and their capacity to program the clones. Rex believed it was only for insubordination, but when he received the Order, he felt the chip and realized what it was that Fives was talking about... in essence he had a hardcore epiphany and also fear when he realized it was too late... he didnt want to let Fives down and Ahsoka was the only one he could tell.

Crazy thought, but what if Anakin showed him some techniques to ward off force suggestions? It wasn't enough to allow Rex to completely defy Order 66, but it got him a few seconds.

I watched clone wars long ago but I remember the episode when a clone shoots a jedi,and he is taken to kamino and killed(I think) and then fives found out about the chip.

I wish we got more of the finding out about the inhibitor chips. Like deep dived into that, 5’s, Rex more. I just want more Order 66 stories 😂

It also helped that he knew she was no longer part of the order. The conflict of heart and knowledge against the order made it harder for order 66 to kick in.

My headcanoon is that while most clones had commanders who followed orders and protocols, Anakin was a rule breaker and committed several war crimes like attacking after surrendering. This independent streak rubbed off on Rex and his battalion who became outside-the-box thinkers and fighters. This aided him and the 501st in initially resisting the order while the rest of the clone army immediately executed their Jedi generals.

Captain Rex was one of my favorite Clone Troopers!!!!! Rex, Cody, Wolffe, Bly, and Fives were my favorite Clone Troopers and I would be Commander Wolffe!!! I love Clone Troopers!!!!! Clone Troopers are the Best and my favorite Characters in Star Wars!!!!

Even with the inhibiter chip, a safe presumption would have had at least a 10% failure rate, which at minimum would have resulted in a civil war.

It's because Rex is the absolute best! Hands down my favourite character in canon It's also felt at times that while Rex was good friends with the likes of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Cody, his bond with Ahsoka as time went on became more like brother and sister than anything else. Legend

Rex was also in the habit of bending orders for the sake of the mission. This gave him more internal strength against being controlled. Which ended up being about 5 seconds of time but enough to keep her alive

Yeah, this part of clone wars was wild as shit and Ahsoka and Rex had to battle their asses off to get off of that destroyer and then maul takes the last remaining ship or did he well we all know the answer to that

I read something where a person believed that when Ventress was trying to mind trick Rex into telling her where Anakin was, he pretended to be mind tricked and did what she said while deliberately calling him Anakin instead of general skywalker so he would know something was up, with this theory and Rex overall individuality I think it’s safe to assume that he is not weak minded but in fact incredibly smarter than we think

rex also was able to hesitate thanks to anakins encouragement for free thinking seeing him more as a friend or even family giving Rex that few precious moments to warn Ashoka. that also why ever commando regimen disobeyed order 66 seeing all detectives more like guidelines thanks to their training and full free thinking. Bosses group even almost took down Vader protecting a Jedi friend resulting in boss being killed and the other three imprisoned for treason. they never believed the Jedi would turn traitorous and saw the use of order 66 as a Separatist trick. and just to show how much faith sidious had in the commandos, they were meant to be his guards and secret enforcers.

It's not just that he didn't want to kill his friend, he realised why Fives died and that him and all his brothers were tools stripped of their free will.

When Rex said find Fives I legit thought fot a moment that was Fives somehow still alive on the Ventnor and Rex knew the entire time and wanted Ashoka to get him so they could find a way out

Another part of it was that he was an ARC Trooper. They have the strongest sense of independence out of all the clones, since that let them be more tactically flexible on the field. This incidentally let him resist the programming better than other clones that had stronger obedience trained into them.

In Lore if y’all remember some troopers developed PTSD bc some were close to their Jedi generals and were basically forced to kill them (idk if it’s canon now bc of Disney)

I actually like how he didn’t manage to completely fight the influence of the chips, and did succumb to the command and begin firing. He’s still a clone, he still had that chip within him. I think it would have been really stupid if he’d managed to fight the control of the chip completely, even with struggle.
