In person from St Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury we look at how in the late 500s and early 600s, England went from being not a Christian, to being very Christian indeed, but how and why was this the case. At the centre of this were perhaps some of the influential people in Anglo Saxon England, including King Ethelbert and Queen Bertha of Kent, St, Augustine, King Raewald of East Anglia and Pope Gregory the Great.

As a protestant I am not aware of much of the Christian history pre-reformation, so this helped me out, its cool to learn about countries initial stages in becoming Christian.

“How did England become Catholic?” should be the title. Saints, Popes and the date 597 should make it clear, as Protestant Christianity didn’t appear until Luther’s revolution in 1517. Henry VIII, formerly Catholic, founded the Protestant Church of England in 1534.

Christianity did not split off into Catholic and Orthodox until 1054 AD, before then it was just Christian therefore it would be incorrect to call this video “How did England became Catholic?”

@@timetraveltvniles7650 The first use of the term "Catholic Church" (literally meaning "universal church") was by the church father Saint Ignatius of Antioch (c. 50-140) in his Letter to the Smyrnaeans (circa 110 AD). He died in Rome, with his relics located in the Basilica of San Clemente al Laterano.

Hm, 'England' did indeed have a strong christian ptresence. He moved into a recently vacated church. It was top down, saxon aristocrats converted. The last Celtic bishop of London was forced to leave in 585, just a few years previous Augustus travelled to perhaps near Worcester to persuade a great many Celtic bishops to follow Rome. They found him arogant and rude and so refused. Dressed in purple and dripping with gold he promised dire consequences and it is still believed he ordered the massacre of 20000 Celtic christians at Bangor is y coed after the Battle of Chester the year after

According to the 'Venerable bede "The Christian faith replaced paganism at the battle of Winward Nov 15th 655AD when PENDA of Mercia was beheaded by OSWUI of Bernicia. Thus ended paganism in Britain. Many were put to the sword or drowned and the victory the result of divine intervention due to Oswiu's prayer that 'If I am successful, I will enter my daughter into a convent as a nun!'. So once again, as in Roman Italy & all other European lands 'Christianity' was established not by preaching but at the edge of the sword, torture and death! ( Islam was no different!). This is NOT the true Christianity of Love.

England before Augustine wasn't Christian that's true. They were of the original true faith and followed biblical Holydays and not the Catholics new religion of "Christianity who followed the queen of heaven and the goddess ester (easter). They were murdered by Constantine if they didn't convert.
