About KIRBY:
Kirby Pábalan-Táyag Aráullo is a Filipino American historian, content creator, and renowned culture bearer based in California. He is also the author of the groundbreaking book “Black Lives & Brown Freedom: Untold Histories of War, Solidarity, & Genocide,” and the Co-Founder and former Director of Operations for the Bulosan Center for Filipino Studies at the University of California, Davis.
Kirby is a direct descendant of the last indigenous Paramount Kings of Luzon (of both Lakandúlâ of Tondo and Rája Matandá of Maynílâ), of the anti-colonial revolutionary Katipuneros, and of World War II Guerilyeras who fought for the liberation of the islands we now call the Philippines.
Born in Angeles City, Philippines, Kirby spent his childhood amidst the rebuilding of his homeland in the aftermath of Mt. Pinatubo’s cataclysmic eruption. His childhood beneath the shadows of the city’s red-light district, slum neighborhoods, and Clark Air Base (a former U.S. military installation) sparked his lifelong passion in advocating for the rights and the well-being of marginalized and disenfranchised communities. As a direct descendant of revolutionaries, politicos, and activists, Kirby’s upbringing was molded by productively engaging and navigating the realms of advocacy, traditional politics, and grassroots activism.
With a keen interest in varying fields (such as history, public affairs, and filmmaking) and a strong commitment to serving the community, Kirby studied at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, such as Harvard University, the University of California, Davis, and the Université catholique de Louvain (one of Europe’s oldest universities). He has been teaching Filipino people’s history through writing in indigenous Philippine scripts (Kulitan & Baybayin) for over a decade.
Today, Kirby is well-known for his educationally engaging KZfaq channel where you can find videos about history, culture, and everything in between! He is also currently working on his next big book “Luzones & the New World: Forgotten Histories from Southeast Asia to the Americas” along with an easy-to-read book and zine series known as “Know Our Roots,” and an educational coloring book series called “Color Our Roots.”
Kirby is an educator who is well-rooted in his culture and passionate about his colorful heritage (Kapampángan, Tagálog, Indigenous Áytá, Pangasinan, and Spanish-Basque-Portuguese-Irish Mestizo); he strives to decolonize Philippine history and democratize Ethnic Studies through knowledge and creativity. Kirby is a Dátû and Lakan by blood but an Artist-Scholar-Activist at heart.

The term "Imperial Hubris" might describe the situation Magellan put himself in. He refused the help of Humabon and wound up as a headless corpse when he couldn't put his ship's cannons against The Cebuanos. He didn't want to lose face and went ahead with the attack that he probably knew would fail. The Cebuanos delayed the Spanish conquest for another 50 years. When they came back, The Filipinos were as divided as ever. I wouldn't exactly call the Cebuanos or the rest of the population of the islands "indigenous" though.

They were so ashamed that the Rapier got beaten by Kampilan that they fabricated a story that Magellan got killed by an arrow. How sad is that. As if conquistador's don't have breast plate armor. LOL

There are new claims that the "Battle of Mactan" did not really happened in Mactan, Cebu. Rather, it really happened in Mactang, Camotes Island. Even in Pigaffeta's accounts, he did mention Mactang, Camotes Island There were artifacts of Spanish armours found in Mactang or Matang Camotes Island as well that dates back 1500s which fits the time line of the so-called "Battle of Mactan" You might want to research it your self bro. Suggestion only 🙂✌️

Hi Kuya Kirby. do you have any idea where I can confirm if Tondo had an empire in Luzon? Also, id like to know more about pre colonial Philippine warfare. E.g. we know so much about the Japanese with their Samurais, naginata, what's their battlefield strategy, etc. id like to know something like that for the Philippines.

I don't believe that the men in Mactan who fought Magellan were a thousand men, it's a hyperbole, another way of saying too many that they were outnumbered and too many to handle. Probably those people were also residents of a local barangay or town of that area in Mactan.200- 300 people are already a huge number of people and it's difficult to number multitudes when you are in a state of shock.

Your portrayal of portions of Philippine history is admirable and interesting. However the children who I invited and encouraged to watch your video is having difficult time understanding and and often times just stop watching. I ask one of the smart kids who says you speak too fast and your words are sticking together. One kid says “why can’t you just tell it like story telling.-clear and easily understandable “ I love the topic that you present . I like the Lapu-Lapu Magellan encounter like the David and Goliath counterpart. If you read the “ David and Goliath” written by Malcolm Gladwell, that battle was a typical example of what he calls “The (hidden) advantage of the disadvantage” I wish you well. I will Continue to watch more of you video. Btw: The 1500 men of Lapu-lapu as what I knew from my history (UP) was gather from all his neighboring island who are part of the neighboring agreement to help each other if one is attached. The NATO of Mactan . The 1500 men is too many to be coming from the small Mactan Island. That is also the reason why Lapu-Lapu Wanted the battle to begin the next day so he could gather all the men from the other islands. That is why his name Lapu-lapu=“ the gatherer” Thanks Bye for now🙏🏻

There is a thick lie there that Magellan got killed by an arrow to save face that their national weapon pride and considered greatest sword in the world the "rapier" got overpowered by a Kampilan sword. 1. Conquistador wears breast plate armor, arrows would not penetrate it. 2. they have guns. The only option for LapuLapu to win is to get close and fight sword to sword.

So...😮‍💨 How did Lapu Lapu defeat the Spaniards? Unity & indigenous knowledge are A given just as superior technology. Overconfidence is the downfall of any leader. Did Magellan have military experience? Walking into a bay with heavy, clumsy armor is exhausting. Was it the swift movements of escrima, panatukan, that matched or overpowered the superior technology? Did the Visyan have iron wood shields? We're their Kris made from iron? Did Lapu Lapu already have knowledge of Sun Tzu - Art of War? What was enduringly disturbing was the other Visyan warrior clan willingness to fight for the Spaniards. This strategy rings true to this day. Corruption & backstabbing are a dark characteristic of filipino politics along with tribalism. Colonization and capitalism have only made life worse for common everyday Filipinos. We're poorer, more oppressed, and hide our insecurities in our willingness not to stick up for ourselves when someone disrespects, steals, or dishonor us.

Welp maybe. Pigaffeta said it took 1500 natives to defeat the spanish where in fact the warring tribe population at that time did not even exceed to 800 for visayans prefered small families. Well yeah its kinda abit exagerated and used as an excuse to somehow lessen their shamefull defeat hahaha

I'd rather have honest feedback, even if it's negative, than be told something nice but not really honest. Hopefully you'll take my criticism in that spirit. This video was packed with clichés -- collective resolve, indigenous ingenuity, indomitable spirit, etc. -- but sorely lacking in details. How did the Filipinos treat the wood to resist Spanish firearms? What about shallow water gave the Filipinos such an advantage? After having already traveled so unbelievably far, how many weapons and how much ammunition did Magellan have? After two mutinies, were the mostly Spanish crew united behind the Portuguese Magellan? What other smart strategy did the Filipinos employ? I'm left with so many questions but no specifics.

This video is full of errors and invented opinions, not facts. I can't believe that he calls himself a historian. If Magallanes would have wanted, he could have fought with full power with all of his men, but he only fought with 6 to 8 soldiers against around 1500 indigenous fighters from LapuLapu. That's because it was never his intention to colonize or kill all of them but to intervene in a conflict diplomatically between Raja Humabon.

Oh, yes! Another idea: ● Just how much pre-colonial PH History is there that's definitively known, still being deliberated, and/or are just gaps on yet-unknown? ● Any misnomers in our school history books (at least, as of 1990-2000's?) that were disproven or require re-consideration or re-interpretation? ● The Jonathan Hill's _Zondervan Handbook to the History of Christianity_ published in 2006 (in Chapter 4: "Africa, the Middle East, and the Missions East", section "Missions to the East", subsection "Nestorians in Indonesia", p. 118) say this: 「 _There is evidence that Nestorian Christians sailed further than India, setting up churches as they went. A seventh-century Persian account of south-east Asia testifies to churches along the west coast of Sumatra, in what is now Indonesia; some of these churches were dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Virtually nothing is known of these churches of the communities that built them; presumably, like the early churches in China and India, they were built for Persian traders and merchants living in distant lands. Yet these communities seem to have lasted for some considerable time. An Italian traveler in he mid-fourteenth century encountered Nestorians in Java, and we know of a Nestorian bishop consecrated in Palembang, in eastern Sumatra, in 1502. However, by the seventeenth century, these presumably scattered communities of Nestorians seem to have more or less completely died out._ 」Again, this is as of 2006. Any new info on this? Any chance this Vatican-excommunicated church reached what would be our PH?

Hi Kirby, I admire yoour work and research about our filipino ancestors. Thank you for shedding light and debunking the mainstream history narratives that our ancestors were premetives. With that said, I do hope you will be able to present a documented research on the armors, swords and shields that our ancestors like Lapu Lapu used during the battle of Mactan when ever they go into ar. Just to be on the same context, is it possible for you to come up with a presentation on the: 1. Armor and shield composition that were used in combat? Example: a. The appearance b. Wood and metal combination - The kind of metals used and the kinds of woods used c. Variation and disntction of certain armors used for social classes if there's any 2. The variety of weapons used. a. The appearance b. Wood and metal combination - The kind of metals used and the kinds of woods used c. Variation and disntction used for social classes if there's any d. How and when they use it 3. Did they have their own version of guns like muskets similar to the 1600 Shogunate era in Japan? Do we have an illustration of it or an artefact? 4. Did they used their own version of Canons, what does it look like and how did it perform in real combat? I know that this request seemed like a demand. But watching history documentaries in NHK in Japan and the Dark ages warfare in Europe, the presenter did a great job in putting the details in their armors, weapons and the social classes who can afford to used it ((Because nott all can afford to buy it). This is just a long shot request. But if it's possible then you are making a mark on social media abut the gaps that our government historians left out or avoided to present. Thank you so much for your effort and knowledge.
