If you're a short guy wanting to know how did Mike Tyson get on the inside? On this video I'm going to breakdown the footwork he used to close the distance on his opponents
One of the things that Peek-a-boo boxing enthusiasts want to know is how to close the distance like Mike Tyson.
Mike Tyson was one of the most feared heavy weights of all time but what's crazy is, he was much shorter with an inferior reach to most of his opponents.
And in the video I explain how Tyson would get on the inside and deal damage to his opponents.
The first technique Mike Tyson would use to get on the inside was the backfoot step. Traditionally boxers are taught footwork where they will always step forward with their front foot first and follow with their back foot. They do this so they can always maintain a perfectly balanced stance.
But to close the distance faster Mike Tyson would step forward with his backfoot first, temporarily rendering himself flat footed. But from that position, when he stepped his front foot forward, he could cover twice the distance of a normal step, thus closing the distance faster and catching his opponents off guard.
Mike Tysons footwork was definitely unique but what made it so effective was the head movement he used with it. Which brings me to the next technique, the slip step.
Tyson would use the slip step on opponents that would back up as they threw punches. The reason for this move was that the opponents would be out of reach for counter punches, so instead of slipping and countering, Tyson would slip a jab then step in closer to his opponent before throwing the counter.
As simple as this footwork technique may seem. It actually takes a lot of timing and setting up to actually pull it off.
Which brings us to the final technique Mike Tyson would use to get insidel. If you're a short guy wanting to know how to box against taller opponents. This one is important.
The final technique was to put opponents in to a rhythm.
While most boxers try to stop their opponents from building a rhythm and beat them to the punch. Tyson would do the reverse. He would actually try to get his opponents punching in a rhythm, so that he could set up counter punches.
Although this technique can usually be quite subtle. The best example of this is when Tyson fought Donnie Long.
In this fight you can clearly see where Tyson was putting Long in to a rhythm. How he set him up and capitalised on it.
So there you have it,
Those are 3 techniques that answer the question. How did Mike Tyson fight tall guys?

Logan. I just started with peek a boo style with a coach who saw me at the amateurs. He told me that it would be my type of style. Where do I start when I don't have practice? The slip bag? Watch videos? Or your videos? What would be your advice to start at? What would you suggest I do when I'm not at the gym with him?

If you watch Marciano, Tyson had a very similar style. Tyson was more advanced in every way, but Marciano created the foundation.

Mike isnt the greatest but he really could've been. The 80s heavyweight reeked of mediocrity thats why he had no GREAT competition besides 3 and the other greats he faced (90s) he was already out of it.. the drugs, not training, and switching his team that made him great in the first place...if Mike was a fighter in the 70s he wouldve torn that era of greats to shreds of course in an objective standpoint. Mike has the greatest head movement in the damn game till this very day.

To me he is like the roger federer of boxing just pure technique and coordination from the feet to the hands , and both are front runners who like to completely finish off their opposition and struggle more when they need to dig deep in the 12th round or 5th set decider

If you had to build a fighter in a laboratory to be the perfect fighter for the peekaboo style you would build Mike Tyson. I can only imagine what was going through Cus's mind when he first saw Tyson. Probably thought he found his Holy Grail.

Ahhh finally. People are finally starting to see the science of Mike Tyson. I always said do not watch the the punches only. Watch the feet and you see the secret of Mike Tyson. His foot speed was insane! He was on you before you could think. So most fighters decided to back up straight. Fight over!

Anybody can answer (helpfully) Great video and explanation for a fight fan with not much boxing detail knowledge (me). Understood and agree with all but I have a question: at the end, why does the last statement about creating the rythm that sets up the single knockout puch mean that there'll never be another Mike Tyson? Is it because once Tyson employed the methodology and other studied it; it will no longer be effective to copy Tyson's manueverability and tacting, because others learned how to defend/avoid it? Or is it an otherwise undescribed prediction that nobody will train to emulate they attack style or that nobody is likely to be capable. Or is it just an unsopported good line to to end the video, just expressing an opinion in a way that sounds catchy and likely to be agreed with and memorable. I ask all this because the answer; the reason ties back in to me understanding some of the rest of the analysis, or at least understanding better and well enough to be able to apply it or recognize the boxing craft myself if I ever see it in past or future fights. I

Try hard much. You dudes are not Tyson or good and you never will be. Stop just riding Tyson's name trying to steal his ID, so pathetic and get your own style. I'm a trainer and boxer a real one not fake like you dudes. Tyson has little to nothing to do with my training. I'm saying this because I watch boxing all the time and this creepy trying to steal Tyson's life keeps popping up. It's gross how you causals think you know boxing from watching videos. Truly pathetic. Makes me sick.

Bruhhh wtf? This isnt Tyson’s style…Tyson was the most famous practitioner of it and the best at doing it, but that doesn’t mean he made the style, had Cus been alive im sure there woulda been so many more practitioners of it, the style is dying whats wrong with trying to embrace it and bring it back, all those fighters: Patterson, Tyson, Torres they were all exciting for a reason, why cant we have another exciting fighter with this style, plus youre acting like everybody does it cuz they want to… NO, theres people who really suit this type of style if you are a stocky short heavyweight like myself then this style is for you, nothing wrong with that, im not saying do everything like Tyson as everybody is a different speciment, but there’s nothing wrong with taking the fundamentals from this style, no one is trying to steal his ID, Tyson is Tyson no one will ever be Tyson, it wasnt just his fighting that made em that, but practicing peekaboo is no crime man, theres so many people inspired by him, what do you say about others who only fight using that Philly shell nowadays?? Oh they copying Mayweather then ig 🤦🏽‍♂️, just cuz someone use a style that somebody else is most famous for doesnt mean they tryna become them

Like I said I'm a real trainer, I know everything you dudes are saying and doing and like I keep saying it's so pathetic. I love that most of you ego boxing morons disagree, just make you dudes easy target practice for when we real fighters fight other real fighters. You Fakers hate the truth is why you hate me saying it. So So So Pathetic. Ego is why you want to box, I box because I was born and this is what I am not by choice just because it's what am a fighter.
