How Did Scotland Yard Get Its Name?

'Scotland Yard' is a name that's been synonymous with policing and detective work for almost 200 years... but where does the phrase come from?

Fascinating, but all the way through I couldn't under stand why New Acotland Yard was onVictoria Embankment, and not Victoria Street as I passed the latter many times on my way to work in Millbank. However, you cleared that up at the end. Great video.

New Scotland Yard was in "The Sweeney" intro, so I've seen it dozens of times. It's funny, New Scotland Yard was called that in 1890. "New" in Britain is a highly relative term. They should call the current location "the new new new Scotland Yard. "

@@beth12svist Can't top you on locations (the newer versions of Zealand, York, Orleans, Hampshire, etc., are newer than that). However, the New Testament's been around for a fair while. In my ignorance, it completely passed me by that New Scotland Yard had moved relatively recently.

I was born in 1953 so Scotland Yard was still in a brick building whenever we saw films it would feature pictures if that iconic place when they say Scotland Yard I still think of the brick building rather than the modern site I love your videos truly excellent i am a true fan

Nice video Rob. As an aside I was one of the team that had to maintain the BBC's studios in Norman Shaw North until they moved to 4 Millbank. I think it, and its ITN counterpart, must have been the most well appointed studios in the country!

Another Sunday treat, many thanks! There's a fascinating and exhaustively researched book called 'Cutting Point' by Christer Holmgren which proposes that the police in the 1880s were wrong to rule out a link between the 'Jack The Ripper' murders and the 'Thames Torso Murders' - it's well worth a read. And as a cabbie, I wonder if you were ever aware of the routine by the American comedian Kit Hollerbach (UK-based, wife of the late Jeremy Hardy): she would talk about growing up in the States in the 50s & 60s on a diet of British TV and movies, especially crime thrillers - which made so much of an impression on her that the first time she ever visited London and got in a black cab she instinctively told the driver "Scotland Yard - and step on it!" 😉

Jack the ripper was a copycat murderer. Mary Kelly's boyfriend was extremely jealous and after the original murder Mary Kelly stopped soliciting for a while. He used to read her the newspaper stories in order to try keep her off the streets. All the murders were within a street or two of her lodgings and she would have known the victims of the last one (Hanbury street is directly across the road). The increase in violence,I think is from his need to continually increase the fear factor,until he killed her

I used to drive buses down Great Scotland Yard, as it was (maybe still is) the location of the bus stand for Route 3. Often made use of the facilities in The Clarence. Such a nice peaceful street, amidst the chaos of Whitehall.

Very interesting. The Civil Service Club was once a fire station, which explains why it's set back from the neighbouring buildings. The space in front was for harnessing the horses to the fire engines.

Indeed, and that Fire Station was originally housed in Buckingham Palace, but Queen Victoria complained about the noise in the middle of the night, so they moved it to Great Scotland Yard.

Absolutely fascinating, as always. Thank you. An old friend of mine once lived a couple of houses away from Denis Nilsen, and said that he was a 'nodding acquaintance'. One day, he got home from work to find the area barricaded off, and police everywhere. He found a new place to live not long after finding out what his amiable neighbour had been up to. 🤔🤔🤔 I can never see that 'New Scotland Yard' sign rotating, without thinking of that 'Not The Nine 'O Clock News' skit, which shows it rotates, because a bored copper is turning a handle, somewhere deep inside the building. 😆😆😆

A former colleague of mine at what was The Post Office, was an ex-Police driver. I remember him telling me he took his Guv’nor and the Skipper to the house when the Dyno-Rod employees raised their suspicions. Bill said the DCI came out the building and said to him something like “Bill, you aren’t going home tonight?” Bill said that the guv’nor had told him that he had lifted the lid of the curry pot on the stove as it was boiling over. Inside was a human skull?

When you showed the red brick Scotland Yard. Oh my god it’s like one in Liverpool by St James train station. Ive been to the museum on the waterfront, and there a carriage from the overheard railway. I seem black and white pictures of overhead railway next to the Liverpool buliding. Thanks for video

I remember as a child, appeals on the radio for information about crimes always ended "call the police on Whitehall 1212" which I assumed was the telephone number of Scotland Yard.

As a somewhat of an amateur historian, I’ve always been curious about the area of London called Scotland Yard. I’ve always known it as something to do with the police detectives and Sherlock Holmes etc. I had no idea about the Scottish King’s connection. I’ve actually learnt something new. The Admiralty Library used to be in Great Scotland Yard. I remember visiting it at the turn of the Millennium. It was in the building that is now the Great Scotland Yard Hotel. It later moved to Portsmouth Royal Naval Dockyard. Shouldn't the Met HQ be called "New New New Scotland Yard"? The current building was built as a Police Station for Whitehall.

NBC in the 1960's ran a series of non-fiction speicals produced by Lucy Jarvis. One of these was on Scotland Yard, called--I think--"the Golden Thread." It was a very positive presentation, pointing out that Scotland Yard had something like a 95% clearance rate on homicides. A lot of good police stuff there, too.

Cool video, just another little tidbit, the "old Scotland Yard" 1st original Met Police building has a tunnel from it that runs along to the Parliament building, I worked there in the late 90s, so would regularly use said tunnel👍

Great video Rob. I did two tours of duty at the Broadway Scotland Yard and was upset to see it being demolished when I returned to the UK after it was sold for redevelopment. The horse stables in Great Scotland Yard are multi storey and the horses are walked up a spiraling ramp which I found interesting. Thanks again. Looking forward to your next masterpiece. Lance.

Interesting background on Scotland Yard some I didn't know always love that I learn something new. I have walked around this area hundreds of times but never went in the Yard itself no reason to. I have read most books that reference it mystery novels mostly and tv shows. They don't do it anymore unless it's a period drama sadly. Not even Trigger Point or Line of Duty.
