Before the Netherlands gained independence During the Dutch Revolt, they were under the sovereignty of the Spanish Empire. But how did Spain even get control of them in the beginning? They're not really close to each other.
This video serves to give an answer to this question.

Great content indeed. For this video, 1.25 speed would make it sound smoother.

The 80 Years' War. Philip II was the legitimate monarch of the Netherlands. As a good Catholic monarch, he applies the decrees of the Council of Trent (1545-1563) in his kingdoms. The Northern Seven Years' War (1563-1570) between Sweden and Denmark produced a fall in trade, wages and a rise in the price of food in the Netherlands. In 1566 the Dutch nobles presented the Breda Compromise asking for religious freedom, which King Philip II rejected when he saw that this religious freedom had caused the Religious Wars in France (1562-1598). On August 15, 1566, the "Beeldenstorm" occurred, riots caused by the Calvinists, in which they attacked the churches and destroyed the images of the saints. King Philip II sends the army with the Duke of Alba to quell the unrest, arriving 1 year later. There are no longer riots, but the "Raad van Beroerten" is created, which condemned a total of 8,957 people for the riots between 1567 and 1576, of whom 1,083 were executed and 20 exiled. In 1568 William of Orange rebelled against his king and paid a mercenary army of Germans with whom he would start the war. In 1569 "Tien penning" (It already existed in Spain with the name of "Alcabala") was created to cover the costs of having an army deployed in the Netherlands, further damaging the Dutch economy. After nine years of war, the Edict of 1577 (or Perpetual Edict) was signed, with a return to the "status quo" prior to the war, withdrawing the spanish troops, eliminating the inquisition and recognizing William of Orange as stadholder. The States-General of all provinces rallied behind William of Orange as their unofficial leader, who made his triumphal entrie 22 September 1577 into Brussels, where he was welcomed as if he were a king. While Orange was awarded the title of "ruwaard" of Brabant by the States, Aarschot was appointed stadtholder of Flanders, and they agreed to bring in Matthias of Austria to replace Don Juan as Governor-General. Meanwhile, radical Calvinists had seized power in Ghent on 28 October 1577, turning the city into the Calvinist Republic of Ghent, and the bishops of Bruges and Ypres were captured and imprisoned. The new regime established a Protestant theocracy that vehemently persecuted Catholic clergy. It was also militarily expansionist, seizing control of other cities in the County of Flanders, where similar Calvinist committees were set up. In 1579, Wetteren was plundered. Every town that experienced a revolution would witness iconoclastic acts and violence against Catholic clerics. The Ghent radicals sought to take a leading role in the anti-Spanish rebellion, which they saw as a religious war against the Popish Catholic heresy. The Union of Arras is created. Thus, the Catholic provinces of the south were reconciled with the king to have his protection against the intolerance that the Protestants now showed. The Union of Utretch was also created with the rebel provinces. In 1581 the States General of the Netherlands signed the Act of Abjuration ("Plakkaat van Verlatinghe"), with which there is no turning back to the negotiations. With most of the Netherlands in the hands of the rebels, the Calvinists launched the persecution of Catholics, murdering religious and imprisoning Catholic supporters of the king. In 1585 Elizabeth I of England supported the rebels as an strategy to weaken Spain. In 1603 Elizabeth I of England died and peace was signed between England and Spain. England stops supporting the Dutch. Exhausted on both sides, the Dutch asked for a truce in 1607, which the Spanish accepted. In 1609 the 12 Year Truce was signed. In 1622 the truce ended and the war resumed. In 1646 Spain realized that it could not win the war and began peace talks. In 1648 Peace of Münster Treaty is signed and the Netherlands becomes independent.

Great video, I'd recommend working on your delivery a bit. Try going through the script a few times to become comfortable with speaking and cut out the best takes from each.

As to the mental attutude of that age was, it was NOT "Spain" which acquired the Low Countries, but the individual person of the KING of Spain (of the crowns of Castile and Aragon, in that age, indeed) who acquired them from his father's heritage... There was a difference (for instance, the local laws went on applying, they were not replaced by Spanish laws).

Incorrect, the Northern Netherlands where only partly protestant and there were many protestants in the Southern Netherlands too. The difference is that the North wanted reliigous tolerance and let the cities deal with it, while the South bottled it and submitted to catholic Spain. Dutch independence was not after the 80-years war but happened early in it's second decade.
