Looking into some of the mechanics behind the somewhat crude looking dismemberment possible in Grand Theft Auto 3!
As a game developer myself, I hope to bring some unique insight into the minds of the developers who made some of my favourite
games.

What’s crazy is that it’s now official in the game, especially on Steam. I remember playing it on PS2 and there was no gore unless you punch in the cheat, but after getting GTA 3 on PC, boy, I was surprised to see a dude’s leg get dismembered by a pistol while I was farming for pistol ammo.

That is dumb. You're just automatically subbing to any channel that talks about an old videogame. The least you could is check their other videos to see if it's a channel that you'd be interested in.

Neverwinter Nights, the first one, does exactly the same for the player character and many humanoid NPCs. Not to allow dismemberment, though, but to switch bodyparts to show the armor the creature is wearing. I.e. put on a different armor, and the chest, pelvis, arms and legs parts are swapped. Put on a helmet, and the head is switches to a helmet (that's also why there's no open helmets in the game). Certain NPCs still have their own model, though. Aribeth, for example. That's why you don't see any different armor on her model when you get her as a companion in the second expansion campaign.

I'm so happy that the new episode is here. Don't worry about us, we're not going anywhere. Don't rush any of these episodes, we're happy each time you get around to making one! Thank you so much! As for my request; I wonder how taxing the unit customization must have been for *_Impossible Creatures_*. In that game, you can pick two animals and assign which bodyparts you want your combined creature to have. One of the things that could happen, for example, was that if you combined a porcupine with a wolf, and you put the head of a wolf on the body of a porcupine, the head would be scaled up to proportion with the porcupine. While it could be possible that they pre-calculated each combination and put them in a database, I suspect that it's a less intensive process. Do you know how they might have done that?

Plenty of tricks really. Like you could easily write a short book on how to properly optimize large open world games. So one of the more common methods I know is hiding things or swapping textures with lower resolution ones when the camera isn't focused on them. Another trick that isn't quite as common, but is sorta neat I think, is simply hiding loading screens while the game itself is still going. I want to say Batman Arkham Asylum might have first done this, but I do know Witcher 2 hid really quick loads when opening a door since you can sometimes see things pop-in if you angle the camera just right... This method is also used in Witcher 3 in a similar method. Frankly there are countless options to choose from that it would probably take an hour just to go over them.
