Beautiful Kit Matthew. How did they do it back then? Highly skilled Engineers, Draftsmen & Machinists.

Built that kit last year. Goes together easily. Monogram was very proud of that range of kits. Started when they discovered that someone near to the office owned an SJ Phaeton and he was willing to let them measure and photograph it. Italari, Jo-han and Heller also did a number of '30s classics.

Thanks for doing an un-boxing of this kit, I also have the same Duesenberg in its original sealed box. It's in excellent condition. Best yet is that I paid $5.00 for it about twenty years ago. I agree Monogram makes some terrific classic car kits.

Yes the Monogram classics were exceptional.I recently built the 41 Lincoln and the fit and detail are quite remarkable, given the age of the tooling .

Wow that is a very nice kit and the most detailed instruction sheet I have ever seen. I really enjoyed seeing all the different kits that were available, "Boothill Express" was, and still is, the coolest Hot Rod ever!!!! Fun fact: the phrase "that's a real doozie" or when something is called a "doozie" came from the name Duesenberg and the high quality that the cars are. I can remember when I was in the 4th or 5th grade, I had a t-shirt that I used to wear to school that had a Duesenberg on the front and said "Duesenberg", none of my classmates knew what the car was, it was just an old car, heck that's about all I knew about it also but I thought it was cool, Lol.

I buld this kit a few years ago and it is truly amazing! No fit issues at al. I got the 1970 box, with the green body. Only thing is the chrome, I put a top coat off clear varnisch on it. Because i noticed by older builds i did, that the chrome will disappear as time passes

I just checked online, and in 1968 (when I was eight years old) $3.00 was equivalent in purchasing power to about $25.50 in 2023. I'd say you got a VERY good deal for an excellent, classic model kit. Enjoy your build! As an aside, does anyone else remember the way a brand new Monogram model car kit (especially the Tom Daniel Customs) smelled back in the day? It was for us kids what the 'New Car Smell' was for our parents . . . .

If you have any original issues of even some of the simplest AMT kits you can see some fantastic details. The instruments on the dashboards are very well detailed and easily painted to hilight this. How they did it I don't know. A lost art for sure. Take a look with your magnifier.

Looks like that kit is a lot better than the Newer model car kits of today’s era that you can get at Hobby lobby or hobby store in some of the AMT kits they don’t even number the part that drives me nuts it makes me mad at times From there it’s like a guessing game you have to go by the picture of the instructions

Those old Monogram kits do go together so well. I get what you mean about building these kits back in '68. You would be in my age group, like Mark Batson. I went up to the HobbyTown USA about two weeks ago as I said I would, when I mentioned the model show there. It is in the back of the shop. This is an area of about 900 to 1,000 sq. Ft. So it is a small show. Swap meets are on different days. The next show is sometime in April. These are judged shows, with best of show spectator votes. I will try to get up there to review it and send you some pictures from it. See what you think about it. It would be a long way for you to travel, if you would want to participate. There would possibly be another show in September. Just thought you might like to know about this.

I built that one when it first came out and I had to mow 2 lawns to get enough money to get it ! With my .15 cent tube of testors cement I was off to the races ! They were outstanding kits at the time and were always competing with Revell for the modelmarket. They were beautiful kits I must say !

I have 3 Monogram kits from the '80's Packard, Deusenberg and Rolls Royce. In two minds whether to assemble or keep boxed. Fabulous kits - do they still make them?. An earlier Deusenberg 20 Grand Monogram kit (assembled) had a battery powered electric motor too which took the concept of detail to a whole new level. Can't seem to find them anymore ?.

A popular brand of tire back then were Maypops.. That's why they kept extra spares. My grandpa used to rebuild/restore old cars and he had a couple of Duesenburgs. They were his favorite. I miss the orange smell that the glue used to have.

All the chassis were made in 1928, but they put the year of the car on it when they actually sold it and registered it, so I guess it took them 10 years to sell all the ones that they made.

Look at all the other things that were built back then without " modern technology". It's because people were educated in things that mattered and those with the talent and skill were employed for their abilities. All done by hand by craftsmen with knowledge passed from master to apprentice . No computers to think and cut the tooling for them. This is what human beings are capable of when they are free to think, be imaginative and create . Corporations seemed to forget that as of late as they transition more and more to AI ,cnc and 3d printing and away from natural gifted people. Not everyone is an IT computer tech which is what everything is requiring now. Those "complicated" instructions compared to those now demonstrate clearly the degradation in our societies education level. It took skills and thinking to follow those old instructions.

You keep showing these Monogram Classics and it makes me want to abandon my current plan. I'm trying to build all the kits my son has given me over the years along with all the kits I've started and not finished the last thirty plus years. Something like thirty odd kits left. I'm currently working a sad AMT 1937 Chevy Cabriolet from the Proshop series. I bought it over ten years ago thinking it would be a quick build like the others Proshop cars. Terrible, just terrible, I know why I put it back now. I've repainted it, after fixing numerous issues. No wonder I find very little stock built versions of this kit.

Very nice kit! Enjoy building the old Monogram kits. Your "chrome" tree is not representing chrome, but nickel plating. Chrome did really show up on cars until after WWII. Don't do anything to it, it is fine.

LoL, Believe it or not I built one of those 20 something years ago and it was box stock but had candy paint on it.. Extremely intimidating for a guy like me to do.. The entire kit except the tires were chrome plated and you should thank your lucky Stars That one isn't 😎 They really are Elegant looking cars though.
