I worked on this film and he’s got it all correct. That top light in the field was this huge balloon light with a skirt on one side. The key light on the truck was a Skypanel rigged to hood lol. Luca had this thing where he wanted a nearly 360 degree view of set so it was a lot of shuffling crew back n forth to get shots. Overall super fun film to be apart of! They cut a CONSIDERABLE amount of footage, we did 60 locations in 40 days. Hopefully the 4 hour cut is released for us. 🤞

@botbot3698

@@DaloopyGaming I find this fascinating. When you see KZfaq cinematography tutorials, (besides on this channel) they always do the key light rim light fill light thing and it always looks "lit". It seems like less is more when it comes to cinematic lighting.
@cfl4286
@cfl4286 Жыл бұрын
@@DaloopyGaming That's a generalization that is definitely not always true. On bigger shoots there'll be some days that are pretty easy and other days where you're throwing up every light you have on stands or cranes and running power from generators a ways away. The softbox they built for that night scene probably took a rigging crew at least half a day. It really just depends on the film, project or scene and what the Director and DP are going for. That being said, the more "natural" style with less backlight and fill does seem to be in right now.
@notverynotoriousg5674
@notverynotoriousg5674 Жыл бұрын
@@cfl4286 I was going to say, it depends on a lot, they were going for a lot of natural effects here. They film a lot in the neighborhood I live in so I kind of learn a lot just by observation. The way they light a house at night so it looks like daytime in interior shots, etc. Some things just need a lot of light.

Love this breakdown. I saw this film recently and was talking with my partner about how naturalistic the lighting felt and how it felt like there was barely any additional lighting, just whatever was on location. I love being so wrong on this occasion, and to see all the underappreciated craft, work and planning that goes into getting such a natural look.

I'm very impressed with the visual approach in this film. It really feels like you're seeing something halfway between Gus Van Sant's early 90's work and Wim Wenders' PARIS TEXAS. Anorher film that came to mind was John Huston's WISE BLOOD, an underappreciated gem that it seems to forsee what the Coen Brothers would go after, especially in their first four films.

The green tape on the TV screen *kills me* .... usually the result of NOT having an on-set VFX supervisor. Compositors have been screaming from the rooftop for years that you don't need green on the tv screen itself since it doesn't need to be keyed, you're placing an image ON TOP of it. As for tracking markers, the ONLY time you need them is if the shot is so tight that you can't see the edges of the screen, or any discernible contrast that can be used to 'track' it. I've comped iPhones that were shot with macro lenses so you could see the text large on screen -- THIS is when some tracking markers would help. The biggest reason you want to avoid adding anything to a TV/computer screen is that when it's left off, you can take the NATURAL REFLECTIONS and comp them back overtop of the inserted video element you slapped on. This alone makes the difference between high end feature VFX vs low end TV series. So when you're on set -- STOP PUTTING SHIT ON THE SCREENS. Oh and check out my band.
