How did we fix Mat Armstrong's Lamborghini?

When ‪@MatArmstrongbmx‬'s twin-turbo Lamborghini broke down in Spain everyone wanted to know what had caused it. Was it the tracker unit? Could it be fuel related? The comments had a huge number of suggestions, but there was only one way to find out.
As soon as the car was back on UK soil, we got it back to the shop to investigate, and, after an hour with a laptop, we found the problem...
Pleased to say that Mat now has the Gallardo back and is looking forward to using it - hard!

That was quiet fantastic Rick. Being a computer guy for 30 years. I appreciate that applied level of engineering. I’m all over my cars now with diagnostics tech and see the who’s who’, the what’s what and the when’s where with it all on how they’re running.

Had an issue with my upgraded RB26 AEM CAS disk… ended up with the oscilloscope out and found out that both the ref and sync rising edges were happening simultaneously - causing a trigger issue at low rpm. Changed it to a falling edge ref and so far so good! Funny your vid came out the same time I was sussing mine! Good stuff!! 👍👍

Great insite in what a crack sensor needs to work, explained in a way that made it very Understandable. Now I understand what went wrong on my Audi S4 B5 when crank sensor failed on that, and yeah was a twat to change. Great video as always . Thanks 👍👍

I’ve got a Vauxhall Combo Van and does a Crankshaft Sensor every few years what a pain just for a small part

Yes, is a pain especially as it just kills the engine!

I used to work with Volvo trucks. If the ECU didn't see a cam sensor signal during crank it would fire an injector every 360 crank degrees and watch for the rpm to kick to work out where it was and then run normally after that! So if you had a truck that had to crank for a longer time than normal, it was a good bet to start looking at the cam sensor. Don't know if cars do that though!!

Would it be impossible for an ECU to use a crank position sensor (s) to run the engine in a limp home mode. ie it recognises the loss of crank sensor and then when cranking shuffles through the sync options until it see's the engine start. A bit like back in the day if the distributor was loose someone could crank the engine whilst someone else turned the distributor until it fired.

So certain ecu’s can continue running if they lose one of the signals. Some ecu’s can start after a long cranking period if they lose a cam signal (they just batch fire until they see rpm flare) but on stock R8/Lambo ecu’s or the syvecs they won’t do anything without a reference signal.

Money diagnosis will always work, it’s just how many times you have to buy expensive parts to swap out. We just like to prove what it is with diagnosis before we change anything. 👍🏼

Syvecs has an inbuilt scope, that’s the ref/sync capture I show.

Is this similar to a phonic wheel ?

Same principle but a phonic wheel passes a magnetic sensor to generate a voltage which is interpreted by the ecu. These Hall effect sensors have a small chip inside which essentially ground the signal hence the need for 3 wires (5v, gnd & sig) whereas a mag sensor is commonly 2 wire.
